Replacing the stepper motor in the Speedometer
Submitted By: oHIobellboy Date: April 20, 2009, 01:53:43 PM Views: 10428
Summary: If your speedometer starts acting up and it's out of warranty, This thread should help you repair it yourself.

I picked up the stepper motors off of ebay. Digital Dash solutions is the seller.

I took a pix so I would know where the needles needed to go back on at. I also filled the tank this morning so I knew the fuel gauge would be accurate.

Before

With the bezel gone. To remove the bezel, Apply the parking brake, turn key to on and shift to D1. Then pull the bezel towards you and it will come right out.
There are four 7mm screws holding the cluster in you need to remove. Turn the truck off and then unplug  the cluster.

Without the cluster

The cluster on the table and in various stages of disassembly

Clips you need to undo to get the 3 pieces apart. NOTE: the ones on the bottom of the front piece were pesky little buggers.

You need to take the needles off. I used a fork and gently pried them off

Back side of the cluster

The four pins you need to desolder are in the red circle

Without the motor.   The new motor will only go in one way

Install the new motor and reassemble.

Here it is all back together.

I missed my speed by about 1 mph and it reads fast but I'm happy with it.
