Project Stealth Avalanche Matte Black Wrap
« on: July 31, 2010, 02:38:10 PM »
Just scored 200 Square feet of 3M's Matte Black CV3 vinyl from ebay in a 480 inch rool by 60 inches tall...  When it gets here I'll fly it with me back to Egypt.  I'm pretty sure I'll be around 80 square feet short though.  So, I wanted to get all of your opinions on the following,

How many square feet do you think it'll take to cover a older body style "Cladded" Avy?

For those of you who have experience in the matter,
Is an overlaminate on the matte vinyl neccessary?

also got me some jet black Alcantara for the door panels

I promise!   This will be my first ever official online documentation of a project pertaining to the Avalanche.

I've attached some pictures below of the application process and the Matte Black film itself on other veichles.  After a lot of forum reading and much searching I have decided to go with 3M because I believe they make the most innovative/quality vinyl.  Their "ControlTac vinyl supposedly makes application of the vinyl much easier by allowing the repositioning of the vinyl then when satisfied apply pressure to "Seal the Deal".  Also, this film supposedly breathes, so you should'nt find yourself chasing little stupid air bubbles from the center of your hood to the edges.. haha.

I personally have only seen the film on a Beamer once in Egypt.  Loved the way it looked.  I am a bit worried about the ease in which it may be "knicked or scratched" which is why I'm thinking about investing in an over laminate.  Not to sure yet.

I saw pics of black BMW that had a white wrap.  The fella said he was planing to change colors every year.  I do like the idea but my AV has too many contours in the hood and ground effects.

Watch out for fowlhunter, I think he once inquired about wrapping his with camo pattern.

Good luck buddy and don't be afraid.

I'd like to tackle it myself though I am worried about how difficult it would be.  Especially considering the fact that I am in an apartment for the moment

The vinyl wrap service here also does it's work "Outdoors"   they have experienced staff - thats about the only plus side.  I'm fairly confident I can do it myself with the help of possibly one other person, in order to stretch such a large peice across parts like the hood...  I dunno yet.  I'm going to have to check out this stuff when it gets here on the 7th.  Work will not begin until late August possibly early September.  Weather should be good then.  I'm thinking I might make my way down over to one of the local garage/ wash shops and offer them money for a spot to apply the stuff and for a "helping hand" - not to sure about this idea yet.  Anyway to make things more difficult the Avy is a daily driver.

BD - hahaha, I would'nt even have a thought in the direction of wrapping that kisk :ass1000: paint job!!!!   If my avalanche didnt have this beat up paint job I probably be more focused on lifting it or on the interior.  Though from what I've read/seen/heard this stuff can wrap around and stretch to cover virtually any contour or shape.  I'm going to test that.  I plan to have every inch of this veichle vovered except for the lights, windows, grille and anything else Im forgetting...  haha

I'd love some input from the Birthday Man!!!  FH, where are ya?!?!

Thanks Ski Edition!!!  I hope I know what I'm getting myself into here...

If anyone is curious...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180537900164&viewitem=

This is the auction I won for the vinyl and the following is some more information on the stuff by 3M from their site,

3M Says Do the Math: Cv1 + Cv2 = Cv3

3M Graphics Market Center announces the release of what it believes is the ultimate air release system for vehicle wraps.
10/15/2008

3M? Comply? v3 Adhesive offers air release on a par with original Comply? adhesive and the smoother? glossier finish available with Comply? v2 adhesive.

The new air release system is available on 3M? Controltac? Graphic Film with Comply? v3 Adhesive IJ180Cv3 that delivers the same advantages and benefits of film IJ180Cv2? including a smooth? paint-like surface? but with a superior air release system.

?The bar just got higher?? said Tim Boxeth? marketing manager? 3M Graphics Market Center.

The new Comply v3 adhesive teamed with the recently released 3M? Controltac? Wrap Film with Comply? v3 Adhesive IJ380Cv3? when used with 3M? Scotchcal? Gloss Overlaminate 8580? is ideal for wraps with deep channels or severe curves. This new cast film is soft? conformable and lacks memory once installed. Contrary to other wrap solutions? it can be stretched without lifting.

?Installers can bridge channels and concave areas and then stretch the graphic into place. This reduces installation time. According to an independent study? film IJ380Cv3 with overlaminate 8580 installed 30 percent faster than the next closest competitive product?? Boxeth said.

Vehicles such as the Chevy HHR? PT Cruiser? VW Bug? Sprinter Van? Hummer and many boats require this level of film engineering. In addition? almost every vehicle has some areas ? bumpers? corner panels? etc. ? with moderate to severe curves that can benefit from this technology.

This superior performance results from:

Reduced lifting. That means no redos. This saves time? reduces costs? improves appearance.
Faster Installs. It?s up to 30 percent faster. In addition to reduced costs? customers appreciate less downtime for their vehicles.
No Design-arounds or Relief Cuts. There?s no need to avoid severe curves. Eliminating the need for relief cuts saves time and reduces the risk of damaging paint.
No Primer. Eliminating primer means faster installation? removal and reduced costs.

MY FIRST STICKIED POST!!!!

Until the Vinyl get here on the 7th I'll be looking for more information around the web on the best method of application, and trying to answer any questions any of you have.  Until then I guess it's just  ::popcorn:: until the 7th when I get the vinyl and then some more ::popcorn:: until the beginning of September whenI will probably start to apply the stuff.

Oh and here's another picture of yet another Matte Black Wrap.  That stand it's on makes it look like a toy!!!
