Steering Wheel Question
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:41:44 PM »
Okay, all you experts and not-so experts chime in here.  My 03 is on the basic plan jane side from the factory (before the last two years of modding).  The stering wheel does not have the radio or dic controls on it.  Is the wiring in the steering column for the control button so I can install the button steering wheel?

no, but it can be done.

I put an 03 Coulomb with radio controles in my 02 :evil5:

In your case all you'll need is a new wheel with controles and a clock spring/ sir coil, with the new wiring in it.

Clock spring is the part that lets the steering wheel turn with the wiring in it. The harness plugs into the fire wall wiring block.

You'll have to tranfer the body bag over to the new wheel after deactivating the system.   I'm not sure if the DIC butons will work but they could with a little fuss. I use mine for horns

Just the highlighs,

Thanks, Jon.  I was hoping you would chime in.  I see that you're in Wasilla, we moved outside from Anchorage in 96, but our daugter and her family are still in Eagle River.

You will have to have the Body Control Module (BCM) reprogrammed to get the DIC and radio controls to work.  I've installed one of those wheels, but my buttons are there just for looks.   :sotired:

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

bummer. I thought the radio side was plug and play.....

The reprogram should be 1/2 hour at a dealer. unless they get you a whole hour.  :tickedoff:

Just upgraded my dad inlaws radio . one dealer wanted $130, to reprogram it,  the other dealer in town was $50.

Not totally sure, but pretty sure.  I don't think all dealers know how to do the reprogramming either, and/or are so skeptical that they don't want to try.

There are other options for the programming.  I changed my steering wheel to one with buttons and they all work without a trip to the dealer.

I had already bought an aftermarket instrument cluster that had the DIC functions.  I wanted the tranny temp gauge and got the DIC with it.

For the radio, I had already installed an aftermarket head unit and just needed to add the right module to get the radio buttons to work.

Not the cheepest thing to do but, I had already spent the money for the cluster and radio.
I'm right at least once a day.  Was this post it?  (That's for you to figure out.)

Let us know if you ever do tackle this.  I'd like to get my buttons functional, but am doing pretty much what you have decided to do for the time being.
