Built a BedSlide, Best mod EVER - *PICS*
« on: May 21, 2010, 10:11:35 PM »
Just got done building a bedslide for my Avy. I have about $90.00 into it, 10 2" casters, carpet and a piece of 1/4" hardboard on top of the bed mat for it to roll nice on. I notched the rear corners so that the tie downs hold it in if on a hill or whatnot. I added a piece of wood so when the casters drop into the cupholders it rests on the end of the tailgate, I have it extended 16" past the gate. I added a "finger hold" along the bottom edge to grab onto when pulling it out.
I must say, I wish I would have built this as soon as I got my Avy, Has to be the best mod that I have done, I will use this numerous times throught the week and if I need to haul something dirty it comes out in 30 seconds.

  Enjoy the pics.

Very creative. Nice work  As much as I want a steel slide, I may have to make one of these for the time being. Minus the "headboard" though. It wouldn't do well trying to camp in the avy tent with that up there. Did you save your measurements and all the good details?

4' wide with 1x4's screwed on the outside edge for a total of 49.5" - Length is right at 63" with the head board. I glued & screwed everything and it really works great, It actually rolls easier with some weight on it. I used outdoor carpet and spray adhesive on it. 4 wheels on each side and 2 in the middle to drop into the cupholders.
I love this thing and I just got it done a few hours ago.

Very nice.  Great workmanship.

I didn't carpet mine because I didn't want things sliding around on it.  I bought a truck bed rubber cargo mat and cut it to size, but the carpet does look much better.  To add some "flair" I cut the mat such that it has a reveal near the tailgate.  I've painted the wood black, put an extra set of AVALANCHE yellow cladding letter decals on it, then buried it in clear.

I believe that the cupholder casters are right at 29.5" from the rear edge to the center and 9.5" apart to drop into the cupholders. I put the second set from the rear so they just drop off the tailgate when the front ones go into the cupholders.

Time to be a pest. Got any pix of the bottom and how far from the front lip is the cupholder casters?

Here is a picture from the bottom - the rear is to the top.

The top cross board is so I can grab it and pull with my fingers. The second crossbar is what lands on the tailgate when the set of casters falls into the cupholder and the set near it fall off the tailgate. It is about 1/4" shorter than the wheels so when you push it forward it does not need to be lifted very much.

To get the positioning for the casters I pulled the slide out 16" past the gate and marked where the gap between the tailgate & bed was (2nd up from the bottom in pic) and where I wanted the ones that drop off the end (2nd from top) and I had measured to the center of the cupholder to the top of the gate and added that to the length sticking out. (the set closest together)

When I pull it out the casters drop off the gate at the same time they fall into the tailgate gap and cupholders, Makes a nice stop so it does not pull out too far.
