12V in bed to run electric cooler?
« on: May 20, 2010, 10:33:29 PM »
I picked up my Av today and the first thing I thought of was how to run my electric cooler in the truck bed.  There doesn't seem to be a 12V plug back there.  I tried a quick search using the google field at the top but didn't come up with anything.  I'm sure someone has done this before. Would you splice into one of the lights or run a wire through the midgate? Any other options?

I'll try to dig something up for that in the morning. I don't recommend running it off of a light though as normally those wires are not heavy enough to handle the load a cooler with require. It may be best to run something from the auxiliary box under the hood straight to the back of the truck. Remember to use the appropriate size fuse for your wires.

On most AV's there is 12volt power to the trailer hitch plug.

Usually you have to add a fuse to the under hood fuse box and it should work.

Tap the wire at the back and install a plug were you want it. I used a screw on plug with a weather cap. but there is room for a flush mount one in the bed side. I have mine just below the upper left cargo hook in the bed. Behind it and directly under the grab handle is a hallow area that is open to under the truck for fishing wires.

Here's a pix of the passenger side without the  side panel in it. Location for fishing wires is the same on the drivers side.
Thanks for the info Jon

The bottom 2 pix in this thread will tell you how to find the accessory wire on the new generation and how to hook it up in the fuse box under the hood.

Sounds good.  take some pix as you go along with it and we'll add it to our resources page.
