Tailgate Cup Holders
« on: May 03, 2010, 06:58:09 PM »
Tomorrow im attempting the tailgate cup holder mod.  I picked up a Dremmel 4000, accessories and obb gave me a pair of cup holders at bratfest 5.

I figured is time to install and finish the mods i have layin' around.

What size of hole saw do i need?
Did you glued them?

Nevermind, read the title and answered my own question, tailgate versus bumper.  :uglystupid2:

I figured i'd use the hole saw and trim after with the dremmel.   Quicker i guess.

3" will work just fine. Make sure you have a spare pilot bit around. We broke 2 of them the first time I had my hands on that mod. (well, I broke one and Heidi broke the other one). Drill slow. I just used some tbt20 around the edge of the cupholder then to "glue" them in. Mine haven't moved in the two years they've been there.

Yes.  ...but the thing is, since the cup and the hole saw are the same size, the dremmel is needed to shave off some of the cut to slide the cup.

Never listen to me.  I didnt need the dremmel.  I had to add tape around the cup since the hole is a tad bigger than the cup.

Pilot Hole.    After break thru, do not go no more than 2" or you'll hit the sheet metal.  I'd hate to have a ding on the tailgate.

Add tape around the cup to hold it firmly in the newly cut hole.

What kind of mod do you get to do to the outside of the tailgate if you don't DRILL SLOW?

Got mine at Bass Pro Shops, probally have a better chance finding them at a boat or camper supply store than a regular auto parts store.

The tailgate ones are shorter than the bumper ones. I got them on ebay. I think I just typed in cup holders and there were a ton of them.
The longer ones for the tailgate I bought from a local boat store.

I picked up mine for the bumper (Longer) from Bass Pro, I would like to find the shorter ones for the tailgate.  What do they measure?

I just checked the attached link, the cup holders for the tailgate are 2-5/8" deep.

My local RV store has 3" long and 1 1/2" long looks like I will have to check Bass Pro which is an hour away or try ebay.

Hey B, keep an eye out for little boat stores in your daily travels. You might not realize that you pass one on a regular basis because you were never looking for one. Ask your customers if they know of any nearby.

If you look on eBay , you might find them from someone that sells poker table products. That's where I got mine. I don't remember the seller as it's been two years but I'm pretty sure they were in TX.

Put an empty soda pop can in there and leave it in there all the time. You'll be suprised at the looks you get from people. It's hilarious. I've had one in mine for 10months and about 13,000 miles now. It'll get signed and updated in a few weeks.
