Author Topic: Painting the exhaust pipes? (Read 2112 times)

I havent seen my AV for a good of couple of years due to working out of town, winter and the current cricket noise. Washed the truck earlier and while sittin' close to it while posting here, i noticed the rust in the pipes.

Anyone tried to paint these? Frankly they look like chit.

I don't see why you couldn't use a high temp paint on them. I know Sherwin Williams has a high temp BBQ grill paint.

I agree. Should work but I don't know. I had mine bent out of stainless steel tubing.

I doubt it would need hi-temp paint that far downstream.

I also don't think you would need high temp paint all the way at the back. But you'd want to wire brush the rust off before painting it or you might try rust converter paint on it first. I do think I would at least use engine enamel on it rather than just regular spray paint.

Well picked up a can today. We'll see the outcome.

Painted the pipes as far as you can see from driving behind.

Before

Used 100 grit sandpaper to remove the rusty scales off the pipes.

Taped and painted

Looks great Mick!!!!

It will be interesting to see how long they hold up, scratch that, they should hold up pretty good since you only drive it about every two years!!

Well rust is like cancer. It will spread and go thru the paint later on. I would think the best method is stripping it down to a shiner before paint.

That's why I also suggested that you might want to try the rust converter paint. It converts rust to an inert material so that the rust won't continue to grow. Nonetheless, it will still be interesting to see how long it stays looking decent while sitting in the garage undriven.
