I don't see why you couldn't use a high temp paint on them. I know Sherwin Williams has a high temp BBQ grill paint.

Well rust is like cancer. It will spread and go thru the paint later on. I would think the best method is stripping it down to a shiner before paint.
Nonetheless, it will still be interesting to see how long it stays looking decent while sitting in the garage undriven.
