Can I haul a 10.5 foot snowmobile in an Avalanche.
« on: April 10, 2010, 10:30:53 PM »
Hi,
I'm ready to buy but have one question.  Can I haul a 10.5- foot snowmobile in the back of an avalanche with the midgate closed?  I would use a bed extender fitted to the trailer hitch.  Anyone do this?

Thanks!

I wouldn't, the tailgate is composite and probably not up to anything more than a trip or 3 even with a sheet of 3/4 plywood under the machine.

but I like trailers

Worth mentioning,  on older model AV's, the tailgate straps where recalled and replaced with heavy duty ones. Not sure on late models tho'.   Still, i wouldnt rest any riders on any tailgate. A hard bounce everything can snap away.

well i have to say that i hauled a 650 pound 11.5 foot steel I beam over to the scrapyard in my 08. heard a little motion in the tailgate, but put my towing button on and didnt feel anything the 25 minute drive.

i think he could haul the snowmobile but for the money it costs...not worth trying

I have driven a 550lbs Atv up ramps on the tailgate and driven with the 2 rear wheels on it. So I would say that about 300 LBS was on the gate at anytime. I have had 3 people sit on the tail gate but not drive with them on there..

To be safe..  I would not drive with anymore then 300-400 lbs on the gate..

X2, regardless of what the manufacturer says about weight ratings, a little trailer would be cheaper than a tailgate.
