i have been told by a few people that there is some type of mod that you can do to the avy to make it stay in 4cyl mod once you get up to speed. i talked to a guy today that says his friend has it done. i never seen it but would be interested in finding out if this is possible and how.

That's the first I've heard. Maybe it's the mod that requires us to drive just a bit slower than 70.  :fast:

I've not heard or read of anyone doing it on any of the forums I frequent. But most of the forums I am on, people are looking for more power.

I assume it could be done; it would involve tuning software or paying a tuner to do it. It would likely involve simply adjusting parameters in some of the tables so that the pcm is less sensitive to throttle input at cruising speed.

I know Silverbudman on a trip from NC to MI turned his tow/haul mode on and turned off his fuel management or whatever that is and got great mileage on the trip home.

WHERE IT REALLY IS ABOUT THE FRIENDS AND AVY'S, AND NOT THE ALMIGHTY ADVERTISING DOLLAR!

4 cylinder mode?????   :wtf:

Why?  And BTW are there really very many satisfied users of the AFM??  Does highway MPG really incease in 4 cyclinder mode??  I dunno..

I'm sure a tuner or HPtuners could manipulate fueling to keep it in whatever mode you wish since I know most users go that route to get it DISABLED.   :winkani:

The Buffalo use the 65-70MPH cruise rule and will do 21-22MPG.  And that is only if I ABSOLUTELY keep my foot out of it.  If I run it hard I get 18-19MPG.  :cheesy1:

yes... I've done it for people - with a custom diablo predator tune...

makes it stay in 4 cyl mode longer, more often, goes into 4 cyl mode sooner, etc etc...

have to tweak some vacuum pressure settings, some throttle % position settings, etc etc...

ok ...well i dont look for more power.... my truck is just fine but i wouldnt mind sacrificing some power once i am up to speed. to gain a few extra miles to the gallon on long trips. even with my 28inch rims i am getting about 18-19 mpg on the highway and thats running above 70... but i would like to get that number to 22-23 if possible. the guy i spoke to said at 70-75 mph he is getting 23-25 mpg but he just has not pick up power...just the ability to keep the truck going 70-75 unless he hits a incline then the truck goes back to 8cyl.... so is it best to go to a tuner like you guys are talking about or is it better to just buy a tuner that is capable of what i am looking for. just want to know the best route even if its cost a few bucks extra.... thanks for the help guys... i am better at making them look good instead of tweaking performance so all help is appriciated  :cacrocks"

Monte will probably tell you to go with a Diablosport Predator or possibly a Trinity tuner; he's partial to them. Then you can get them to do a custom tune for you.

You could go to a custom tuner; it will run you somewhere around $450 to get the tune done. You will have to send them your pcm to tune or swap them for a pcm that they have already tuned to your specifications. If you do that you can then expect to see a crank sensor error and then you will have to have a crank relearn performed locally at a cost of somewhere around $90. There are several reputable tuners - Nelson Performance, Black Bear, and Wheatley are three that immediately come to mind as long-time recommended tuners. They got that rep for a reason.

You could buy the tuning software such as HP Tuners or EFI Live; it's also relatively expensive but then you can tune whatever you want to tune. The downside is it takes a LONG time to learn how to tune properly. If you don't have the patience and dedication to spend a LOT of time reading and learning, don't go this route. You can also really screw up your engine if you do something wrong.

If you want to learn more about this I would suggest you join PerformanceTrucks.net and do some reading. You can also join the HP Tuners forum. Either one of those will give you a flavor of what you will be in for if you decide to do it yourself.

correct, I will  :cheesy1:    but that is also because I am a DiabloSport CMR tuner - I have their tuning software and can easily create custom tunes for people with them...

and for people not wanting to get in over their heads with HPT, having to have a laptop to do anything with it, or anything else - the Predator and Trinity are excellent products, do their jobs well, and are easier to use for the end user.

And custom tunes can be done via email for them - no having to ship out your ECM and have any down-time with your vehicle...  just simply emailing tune files, and requested data logs, and they get a custom tune emailed back that's all dialed in for their vehicle....

I know Silverbudman on a trip from NC to MI turned his tow/haul mode on and turned off his fuel management or whatever that is and got great mileage on the trip home.

we turned off traction control and put it in Tow/haul mode ... we were up to about 20 mpg + until we hit the mountains ..... then it was back to about 17 by the time we needed gas ... still the best I've ever seen it .... so when ever I'm on the e-way I try and run with traction control off .... and yes it will increase gas mileage ....
