White Buffalo Electrical upgrades (Mod Bug Bite!)
« on: January 22, 2010, 04:05:38 PM »
Well, I had the day off to watch over a sick kid and Momma and got to surfing.  After recent electrical failres ( die Hard Platinum with bad post), I started studying the Avalanche charging system and decided to ATTEMPT to upgrade a few things.

Lets see, according to my VIN build sheet (thanks foxy) I found that the Buffalo uses a DR44G 2 pin alternator that is described as a "145A option".

I ordered the following:

CHEVY AVALANCHE 5.3L HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR 05 06 07 08  8302 / 8301
Price: $269.00
Quantity: 1
Inventory SKU: HO-8302-200 AMP-AVALANCHE
Date: 1/22/2010 6:50:39 AM

I know ...should've done 250 but didn't think it is needed yet!  :evil5:

CHEVY HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR FUSE BLOCK WIRING KIT 101
Price: $48.95
Quantity: 1
Inventory SKU: wiring kit-101 4 gauge- 6 ft - 250amp anl fuse
Date: 1/22/2010 6:50:39 AM

There!  I hope that might beef up some things.....

Then I got to thinking about camping now that the lil one is approaching 4 1/2 yrs. old....

Hmmmm...camping....invertors!!!!

1 "Cobra CPI-A20 AC Power Inverter Remote"
Electronics; $23.47

1 "Cobra CPI 1575 1500 Watt 12 Volt DC to 120 Volt AC Power Inverter"
Automotive; $95.59

1 of Cobra CPI-A4000BC AC Power Inverter AWG Cables
   $29.99

UH....Ok, I better stop.

comments.......Dual battery might be in the future.  I get to keep my old core so I could get a longer belt and bracket and run dual alternators and 2 batteries....   :evil5:

Damn, WB. You taking a portable A/C unit and a full size fridge when you go camping?  Can't wait to see what other kind of mods you do to start sucking electric off of that system. :cheesy1:

Well, it's all just bolt on stuff.  I think I can pull off this install.

I found the alternator and wire at DB electric.  Sorry OBB the guys at Ohio Generator are email deficient or got fed up with me..dunno which... :evil5:

I've read that I could purchase a DR44G upgrade kit for around a $100 that upgrades the rectifier to 70A diodes and a new regulator.  I'll have to see if the bearings can be repaced....

I know there is a part number for a dual battery tray somewhere.....  2funny

I had to throw the brakes on paypal..if ya catch my drift... :winkani:

Hmmm...more parts coming...

Battery tray
clamp
cole-hersey smart isolator

Wish the weather would start to turn around!   :blink1:

I think I need at least a 100Ah deep cycle for the aux battery bank...for starters....

What about a charge controller and 2 80W solar panel that could be mounted on the luggage rack or bed covers....

Warmer weather would be nice, I'm just not ready for the hot sticky summer days.

What about the Painless dual battery kit, I think Summit has them?

I looked at that, a master switch, and a diode isolator..

I would most likely forget a switch and kill the batt.. 2funny
Diodes drop the efficiency of the charging circuit and they produce more heat.   :anono1:

This isolator is supposed to take the thinking out of the system and maintain the charging efficiency by monitoring batt voltages and switching the solenoid accordingly.

Tray is in...clamp is in...forgot the darn screw!!   :uglystupid2:

The weather was right this weekend so I decided to get my auxillary battery tray mounted, wasn't that bad.  I had to remove the coolant reservoir and the brace that was there so I could get the tray mounted.
