Kenwood Marks 30th Year In Car With 56 SKUs
By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 1/14/2010
Las Vegas - Kenwood marked its 30th year in the car electronics aftermarket with a 56-SKU launch that includes its first two in-dash multimedia/navigation units with free lifetime Navteq Live Traffic service.

Kenwood?s top-end navigation/multimedia head unit is the Excelon-series $2,000-suggested DNX9960 with free lifetime Navteq Live Traffic service. The lineup also includes the company's first two iPod-controller receivers, or "mechless" receivers lacking CD or DVD transports.

The 56 products don't include an installed Mobile DTV tuner, which was demonstrated at last year's International CES but won't be launched this year because, at an expected price of about $400, dealers said it would not generate much volume, said senior VP Keith Lehmann, who blamed the high cost of Mobile DTV chips.

Seven of the 56 new products are in-dash DVD-equipped navigation/multimedia head units, a category that the company said is growing in dollars despite overall industry contraction. They're priced from a suggested $1,150 to $2,000. Four other DVD-equipped multimedia head units priced from $700 to $1,100 connect to an optional $600 hideaway Garmin navigation module.

The top-end navigation/multimedia head unit is the Excelon-series $2,000-suggested DNX9960, a double-DIN unit that offers Garmin navigation technology with lane assist, junction view, and 3D images of buildings and landmarks, many of which are photo-realistic. It also features Kenwood's second-generation voice-control system, which delivers improved accuracy and faster response when controlling navigation and A/V functions as well as the functions and content of connected devices such as iPods and USB drives. The DNX9960 also features a front-panel touchscreen that lets users browse album art by swiping their finger across the display.
The $240-suggested KDC-HD545U CD-receiver features built-in HD Radio with iTunes tagging and iPod/iPhone control.

The DNX9960 and a non-Echelon double-DIN navigation/multimedia head unit, the $1,700-suggested DNX7160, are the aftermarket's first in-dash navigation units offering free lifetime Navteq Live Traffic service, which delivers traffic information via FM sideband, Kenwood said. The free service is ad-supported and has been offered in select Garmin PNDs, Kenwood noted.

Kenwood Delivers Flagship Multimedia/Navigation DVD Receiver
kenwoodusa.com

Kenwood USA Corporation announces the initial retail delivery of its flagship multimedia/navigation DVD receiver, the DNX9960 ($2,000.00 suggested retail price). Specifically engineered and manufactured exclusively for the Kenwood Excelon retailer network, the DNX9960 offers more enhancements over last year?s top-of-the-line model, including advanced 3-D navigation technology by Garmin which offers three-dimensional buildings and landmarks with many images being photo-realistic. Lane Assist with Junction View is a new feature designed to reduce highway interchange confusion and improve driving safety. The DNX9960 also includes built-in NAVTEQ Live Traffic service that is free for the life of the product. For maximizing fuel efficiency while driving, the DNX9960 offers the Garmin-developed EcoRoute feature that measures the impact of driving habits on the environment and suggests routes that will consume fuel most efficiently. Kenwood?s voice control feature allows a user to fully operate the navigation system and utilize features such as entering addresses or phone numbers, choosing menu options and select points of interest. The voice control system will also operate the audio and video systems, allowing the user to change between multiple sources, raise and lower volume, seek out music and video files and access station presets. In addition, the DNX9960 can decode MPEG4 and H.264 video files from an external USB drive. The DNX9960 has a 3-D animated graphic user interface (GUI) with selectable skins and movable, drag-and-drop icons for customization. A high-resolution WVGA 6.95-inch touchscreen with Dynamic Luminance Control provides DVD video, iPod video, USB video, navigation maps and source icons. The latest Parrot Bluetooth module is built into the DNX9960 and is compatible with almost all cellular telephones on the market. The DNX9960 comes with a two-year warranty and are available only through authorized Kenwood Excelon retailers.

Kenwood Launches Consumer Rebate Program In Partnership With Garmin

Friday, April 30, 2010 -- Kenwood USA Corporation has announced the launch of a four-month consumer rebate program with GPS-navigation company Garmin International. The rebate program targets specific Kenwood in-dash audio/video models with on-board navigation technology supplied by Garmin.

Dave Hoag, Director of Sales for the Consumer Electronics Sector of Kenwood USA, said, ?Retailers across the country have benefitted greatly from the sales of in-dash navigation products through increased ASP and more profit dollars. Kenwood has led the charge over the past few years, and for 2010 we have partnered again with Garmin in delivering a proven rebate program that is sure to drive consumers to authorized Kenwood dealers.?

The rebate program begins May 1 and ends August 31, placing the promotion in the middle of the busiest retail period of the car audio selling season in most areas of the country, according to the company. Rebate amounts range from $100 to $150 depending on the specific Kenwood model.

Participating Kenwood dealers receive a merchandising kit containing in-store materials, such as a countertop display containing rebate coupons, product ?danglers? that are attached directly to the qualifying product, a mobile that hangs from the ceiling, and a full-size poster announcing the promotion details.

Kenwood also offers banner ads for online promotion and a web link to a dedicated section of the Kenwood USA website for consumers to download rebate coupons. Dealers can craft their own advertisements for the promotion by downloading merchandising images from the Kenwood USA website.

?This year?s consumer rebate program delivers a significant incentive, designed to ease the step from a bare bones in-dash model, or portable GPS unit, into a full-featured premium navigation/entertainment system,? said Hoag. ?Kenwood navigation products offer superior features including premium displays, enhanced iPod, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, high performance audio/video capabilities and the latest navigation technology from Garmin, built-in. Over the years, the pairing of Kenwood and Garmin has proven to be an unbeatable combination and this rebate program delivers unbeatable savings making the step-to-the-best a little easier.?

Model SRP Consumer Rebate
DNX9960, $2,000, $150.00
DNX7160, $1,500, $100.00
DNX6960, $1,200, $100.00

The Rebate Program duration is May 1 through August 31, 2010.

Well my main concern is that in my reading I've seen requirements for an extra harness to make On*, XM and the door chimes all work. Those extra harnesses cost up to $150 each! So in addition to forking out the $1000+ on the unit itself, the extra harnesses and add-ons add another $350 easy.  Of course, that's IF I can find a stereo that fits. Some sites I have seen (Crutchfield, Best Buy) say that not all double din stereo's will fit in the 07. I would really be upset if I purchased the unit online only to find out that it didn't fit.
