New Mexico Oryx Draw Deadline
« on: January 11, 2010, 06:22:41 AM »
If anyone is interested in applying for the New Mexico oryx draw for the 2010-2011 hunting season, the deadline for the application entry is Feb 3, 2010.  The full fee is required up front but if you don't draw you are refunded the tag price minus an application fee ($10 for residents / $27 for non residents).   Tag prices are $163 for resident and $1637 for non-resident.

I'm in some limited draw areas for New Mexico elk with US Outfitters. Each year they send propaganda out trying to get us to apply for the Oryx hunt; we've never talked about doing it.

I hunted with them 2 years ago in the Valle Vidal National Forest limited draw area. Four of us hunted and three of us got elk; the fourth passed on smallish bulls in the early part of the hunt. We are also applying in Wyoming and are buying preference points; we should have enough points to be drawn next year (2011). We have to sit this year out as my buddy is going on an African Safari in April with his wife.

Did I mention we are drawing for an early muzzle loader hunt? It should be a blast. We will be moving to bowhunting after we complete our muzzle loader hunt.

Very cool!  I can't see where I would go with an outfitter for oryx.  If I cared about getting a SCI book class animal maybe, but I am not into record books.  Just after a nice representative of the species.  Finding a decent one in 2 days is not that tough.  They are tough to draw though.  Residents and non-residents are on even ground for oryx.

I had a decent cow tag this past year in the Cibola NF but a motorcycle crash in July left me in too bad of shape to effectively hunt, so I cut it short and had tag soup this year.

The draw results are posted and the hunting gods have smiled upon me.  I drew my first choice hunt which is a month long oryx hunt in the month of December.     I still have elk, deer, antelope, and ibex applications in so I expect to draw at least one of the remaining 4 tags.  Hope it will be a good year.

Good luck on the hunt and good luck on the rest of the draws.

Hopefully your pix won't look like one of mine - of the silver-dollar sized remains of a blister on the bottom of my foot after I walked on it for 4 days. Did I mention it hurt like he!!?  :uglystupid2:
