Topic: new wheels and tires! Give me your comments

So, I have been looking around at different wheels and tires after I recently leveled the truck and have a 3" body lift on order. This is the wheel I am considering along with Bridgestone Revo 285/70/17. Tell me what you think. I have an '05 cladded Z71.

Having the dark grey metallic I don't want to go with an all black wheel but I also don't want a lot of chrome either. With this one I think it will fill my needs. I was trying to find one I can leave on year round with having the lift on the AV. Now tires, I found a set of Bridgestones 315/70/17 I believe will work and look good. Any suggestions on tires? I haven't commited to anything yet.

You'll probably have to do some trimming in the wheel wells with that large of a tire. I'd suggest the Bridgestone Revo A/T Dueler for a tire. It's also hard to go wrong with the good old Goodrich All-Terrain T/A. If I was looking for an all-terrain tire I would also look at the Dick Cepek Radial Fun Country II although they will probably be harder to find locally.

Also - with that much taller of a tire you would be well-advised to get your speedometer recalibrated so your fueling is correct.

Larger tires make the speedometer read too slow. The pcm provides fueling, timing, etc. for the speed it "thinks" you are going. Therefore you are not getting enough fuel, and other variables, for the speed you are going. It can result in sluggish acceleration and poor response. One of the easiest ways to recalibrate is with a handheld programmer - you know the drill - Hypertech, Superchips, Predator, etc. I've tried the Hypertech and Predator and personally found the Predator better.

I ran some calculations to give you an idea: 265/70/17 tire height = 31.61", 315/70/17 tire height = 34.36" so that's an 8.7% difference. So, with the larger tires on the truck, when the speedometer shows you are running 70 mph you are actually running 76 mph.

Said another way - if you have a 3.73 axle ratio, going to the 315s changes your effective gear ratio to a 3.41.

Edit: I had to fix 3 typos in this one thread! My fingers just aren't working today. Maybe it's because I froze them at the farm all weekend and didn't even get a deer to show for it.

The bigger the tire diameter the more MPH the vehicle travels.  Say,   if your doing 20MPH on your speedometer, is more than likely youre doing 22-23mph in reality.

A hand-held programmer of any kind should correct this by adding the tire size.

I think the stock tire is 32" in diameter, if you put on 35" tires in diameter, it will be a huge difference on your speed.

Go with the 315's.  You'll be glad you did!  They will look much better than 285's and fill up the wheel well.  If you go this route you'll probably have to install keys also as well as some minor trimming up front but no big deal.  That is what I had to do.  The only rubbing is in reverse at full tilt but no biggy...

MyBigToy is correct.  When I am rolling down the Interstate and my speedo says 70 my NAV calculates me going 76.

Well the body lift kit finally arrived yesterday!!! Now I need to get it installed and the new wheels and tires arrived this afternooon. Anybody want to help install a lift kit, if not I will probally take it to the local 4x4 shop and have them do it.

just for the fun of it I tried to install the wheels on the AV and of course even with minor trimming and some cranking on the torsion bars I was still not able to turn the steering wheel more than a 1/4 turn without severe warning. I am currently waiting for the 9th to get here so I can take it in and get the body lift installed. The quoted price for install is $250, which from what I have read is a good price. Pics to come ASAP!!!

Just make sure to check everything over really well after the body lift install, especially for things like pinched wire harnesses and rubbing of other components on each other. Needless to say that means crawling around underneath the truck with a flashlight, unless you are lucky enough to have access to a lift.

Awesome looking, similar to what I am looking at when I am able to purchase. I'm currently running Goodrich Long Trail TA's. my only complaint is a bit of a whine from the tires at speed.

I would think is how wide of a gap is in between the threads.
