Strobin'01mobile's rear end possibly going out?
« on: November 03, 2009, 05:18:44 PM »
I had my AV at the stealership today getting an oil change and I have been hearing noise from the left front tire in which they found a minor problem.  But informed me of another problem.  For about a year I have heard a whine from under the backseat area at speeds of 75mph.  I posted on another site and correct me if I am wrong they said it could be the U joint?  Well I hear the whine while on the gas and when I let off it stops.  They said the pinion gear and something else was going out and will cost me around $1400.  I had a rear end go out on a 1988 GMC a long long time ago, and took it to a local shop I trust and they fixed the problem for $583.  It was the pinion gear too. When it went out, I had grinding.  I drove it home that time actually limped home, I just lived a block away from where it went out.  I may take the AV to them on my vacation and the end of the month and see what they say.  What do you all think?

Take it to your local guy Strobin. If it's just the u-joints then it should be a quick fix. If it's the rear end...that could be another story depending on how fast he can get parts. If you have a trusted mechanic, I'd use him all the time as it is.

Definitely let someone else you trust look at it. $1400 sure seems high to me. There might not even be anything wrong with it.

My rear has always made a little whining noise immediately after letting off the gas when coasting; I attributed it to the 4.10s and a poor original installation by GM. It's not bad and I know lower gears can tend to make some noise so I never did anything about it. I changed the diff fluid early this summer at 60k.

TMI...   TMI....

But in all seriousness, $1400 is a rip-off, even for a stealership....

...Well I hear the whine while on the gas and when I let off it stops.  They said the pinion gear and something else was going out and will cost me around $1400.  I had a rear end go out on a 1988 GMC a long long time ago, and took it to a local shop I trust and they fixed the problem for $583.  It was the pinion gear too. Hey Strobin! just outta curiosity...  how bad exactly was the grinding?  By "limped" home it defintely sounds like your ride home was bumpy.  I'm asking because I've got this strange "grinding noise coming from my rear as well!!!  and I've been wayyyy to lazy these past couple of days to post up and ask and see if I can get an answer to whats up.  I'm worried now that its more seriousthan I thought; it hasnt been getting any worse or anything...  its just this strange/wierd grind grind noise that comes from the rear of the viechle every time a tire makes a revolution.  At higher speeds though the sound disappears almost completely.  I'm hoping our two problems arent related at all though...   :cheesy1:
at the same time I want to know why it sounds the way it does!!!

I hope your Av is fixed soon!!!   And like everyone else here...  Take it to the Mechanic you trust!!!!  Not worth the risk of assuming that there is something wrong and dropping good money on nothing...
plus it wouldnt hurt to get a third opinion ;)

Definitely get it checked out.  Back when I had my 02 I had 80K on it and started to hear noises from the rear end.  Of course I ignored and about 2 months later wham-O!!!!  Blew the holy schmitherines out of the rearend and had to have a complete rebuild.  Had I got it in before it completely blew it would have been minimal $$ to fix but I ignored and had to bend over and grab my ankles and beg the dealership for some KY Jelly!!

When the rear end went out on my 1988 gmc back in the early 90's it went without warning. Heard a big bang and grinding. Lived a block away and barely made it into the driveway. Had to have a wrecker tow it to the shop. The mechanic showed me the I guess it was the pinion gear and there were teeth missing off of it from the failure. He put this one back in for one to save me money and two the teeth that were missing didn't pose a problem. Never had it go out anymore.

I'd take it to your local mechanic, but before I'd spen over a grand, I'd check prices at a salvage yard.
Be a lot easier to just replace the whole thing, might be able to find a low mileage unit.

Wellll something is obviously outta place or just not lubricated properly on my Av...  Its just theres no "Stealership" over !!!!  I dont even have that option!!!  I have a mechanic I trust but hes pretty far away...   I will be making a trip down to his shop as soon as I can...  until then Im gunna record a video of the Avalanche and this noise comin out the back and let you all decide whether its really that bad...

"Bang?  Wham?  explode?", Im hoping and praying that doesnt end up happening to me...  I'm reallly heavy footed when it comes to the desert, love whiping the lanche around the sandy streets of cairo...  but Ive been much more careful recently...   I just dont know whether this sound is an indication of a bad rear or something else!   AHH!!!  I need to get down there and get some more info

Called my mechanic and he told me I shoulda let you guys know my Parking brake has not been functional for a while and he thinks its somethin in that area...

So, I'm gunna get it checked out as soon as I can, hopefully its only a Parking brake related issue.

BTW, what I mean by my parking break is not "functional" is that when I apply the Parking brake it doesnt do anything...
