02 w/ On*, HU install?
« on: September 21, 2009, 06:34:47 PM »
I've got an 02 Z71 with On*, I know that the on* is analog and no way to adapt to digital to make it work but I want to instal an aftermarket HU. If I don't get the on* adapter will my chimes and what not still work? So can I get by with just dash kit, Ant. adapt, and wire harness?

Are you sure you cant make it digital. I spoke to the Chevy Dealer out by me because I have an 02 as well and they told me that they can change the ON* box to a digital one for about 250. I know that they said they could do it with out many problems. I am debating having them convert mine so that I can add the On* back onto my truck. Just havent had the time to do it.

What HU are you going with and where are you going to buy it?  You should get a wiring harness to connect the aftermarket HU to the factory wiring.  I just recently installed a new HU in my 02!!  I'm still in the process of installing new speaker wire and new speakers, I have also installed a new Alpine amp!!!!!
Let me know what else I can do to help.

Yeah I went on their website and entered my VIN and it gave a whole explanation and pretty much said "sorry your s@#*s not gonna work anymore" they did say you could adapt the 03-04s but not the 02s(not sure why not) Now if you could retrofit a unit from a later model I dont know?

As far as the HU i've got an Alpine ida-x303 out of my S2k, and yeah ive got a harness and Ant adapter just didnt want to buy the ON* adapter if i didnt need it

I'm pretty sure you're screwed on the onstar part. I read somewhere about the '03+ that uses the class2 databus for everything couldn't be converted for an 02. Or should I say an '02 can't be converted up.

Nice HU!  I purchased everything from Crutchfield, the only parts I used were the HU, harness to connect from the HU to the factory wiring and the ant adapter/extension.  I did not use any OnStar harness and I have all my chimes, etc...  I soldered both harnesses instead of crimping. If you are still going through the factory amp you will need to cut the pink wire from the OnStar harness that is connected to the back of the factory HU and connect it to the blue wire from your new HU harness, if you don't you wont have any sound.  Good luck and let me know if you need anything else.
