? Step by Step on how to install a power tailgate lock ?
« on: September 08, 2009, 11:40:11 AM »

I was fortunate enough to get a power lock actuator from Jeff, the Eye Doc, at Bratfest and now I'm trying to find
a tutorial on how to install it.  I did see Blue has a great write up on the saddle bag locks but can't find the tailgate post.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for everyone looking, I was able to find a link to some instructions.

I think I can dumb my way through this even if its not identical parts.

( I may have to make a custom key lock bracket? )

I've been wanting to also do a writeup for the tailgate but I've been putting it in the back burner.  Avpowerlocks.com should have it.

Contact Steve at powerlocks and see if it's some special piece to go there. He's a great guy and I'm sure he'll steer you in the right direction.

When I bought my tailgate lock, it didn't have the key lockunlock feature. The saddlebags do though but I bought them at a later date.

I noticed that piece on the AVpowerlock site sold separately for $25  :blink1:

don't seem to be enough material there for TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS.  :kickass:

I'll try to make my own, and then buy one if it does not go well.

That's not the price for my fellow club members. PM me if you want one, and I can send you the tailgate power lock install instructions if you want them too (no charge for that of course)

Later

EDIT: I forgot the instructions are on the website  :blink1:

Youda man Cuda.

Somehow I missed you were the one with the kits.  That's what happens when you sit in the back of the classroom all your life.

Sending you a PM soon,

Thanks,

I didn't get my actuator from Steve, but I ended up installing the actuator in a completely vertical position, just below the "C" shaped thing that actually does the locking/unlocking.  I was able to use the mounting bracket/strip that came with my actuator and screw it in with two screws that were both hidden under the bezel when installed.

I'll try to take pics of it this weekend if I remember (and if the weather is nice!)

Thanks Everyone,

I purchased the key lock thingy and template from Cuda. (thanks Bro)

No just waiting for a good time to do the install.

How much of my day should I set aside for this?

Taking off the tailgate, drilling the hole  through the bottom and mid crossbars in the tailgate, leaving the drillbit in there and taping the wires to the end of the drillbit to pull through the bottom of the tailgate - 1 hour.

Running the wire through the AV and connecting to the correct wires behind the B-pillar, 30-45 mins.

Cutting tailgate with template, mounting & connecting the actuator; and testing - 30 mins.  (add 5 mins if you got the wires backwards the first time :4: )

Not sure on the saddlebag locks, but those should be easier, as you can run the wires down through the drainholes, or behind the tail lights (take tail lights off and run wire behind them in the little channel).  I'd guess another hour for both saddlebag locks.

If you lived closer to NJ, I'd help ya out!
