It should take about 6 beers.
Are ya done yet?
Now for the part dedicated to OBB and why I told you to begin with disconnecting the exhaust from the manifold first! I found that if any bolt is gonna be a PITA it will be those nuts! I actually rounded one off so bad I had to cut it off with a dremel (not a fun task!) So if this would have happened out at Bratfest it would have really sucked to say the least so good looking out there OBB!
A good mechanic would have soaked those nuts/studs down with penetrating lube several times for several days before he tried to get the nuts loose because he would have known they would be difficult due to the heat/cool cycles! It's called planning. Just busting your chops, man. Good writeup.
Great Project USMC,For us manically illiterate folk, what is the reason for this mod?Cost vs. BenefitTime and Effort vs. Performance Improvement?Basically, what can one expect to gain from this upgrade? Sound improvement? Better Gas milage? HP gain?I never took a shop class in school, but am intrigued by the Go Fast stuff.B
I need more low end HP. (I don't care if I can go 100 mph, I just want to get to 60 faster.)
Thanks USMC,$200 and a couple hours work seems pretty harmless. The short headers appear to be the way to go for me, I need more low end HP. (I don't care if I can go 100 mph, I just want to get to 60 faster.)Great info and write up Brother.B
I checked Summit Racing, they want $343.?? for the ceramic coated headers. Where did you find them for $200??
To answer your questions.....Cost v. Benefit= honestly shorties for our trucks are not that expensive! You can pick up a set for about $200 not coated (shiny like mine), all the coating is really for is for protection from the elements, and it helps scavange the exhaust gasses because it is smoother and flows very very slightly better. So Cost v. Benefit well it is up to personal preferance but I feel it is worth it because in reality a more efficiently running engine will produce better MPG thus paying for itself in the long run! Although to get the full benefit of the mod I would suggest a custom PCM/ECM tune, and a cold air intake to make your truck run at peak!
He said his were coated.
Ya like I said the non coated (not shiny like mine) ones are around 200, but mine were round $350. like I stated before also you do not need the coating, it is just to help flow a little bit and to protect against the elements (and they look pretty!)
A HAH, I see said the blind man.
Looks like you didn't have a problem getting the bolts lined up, with the gasket in there.Sometimes can be beneficial to slot the two end holes of the gasket, start the end bolts to hold the header in place, then slide in the gasket, then bolt up the rest.Nice job, nice write up.
wow you got lucky!I had 2 broken bolts on each side.3 came out nice one I had to drill and tap.. The one against the fire wall under the steering shaft, I broke the tap in the hole .0025 seconds before pulling out, then I drilled into the coolent passage getting the tap out, then I ended up with a 12 mm bolt took me all weekend to fix that mess up....
Mine are close---Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!! MURFREESBORO, TN, US 09/29/2009 8:03 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY
Hey Pal!I can't wait to see these installed!!!!!!
Me neither---still not here!!!!!!!!!!!
No brother thats is not a crack it is there on mine too. It is just a split between the holes, from the factory. If you look at my pics with the old manifold still on you can see it. Hope all went well man, I expected the phone calls, hope I was of some help!
I'm getting excited!!!! Can't wait to see pics!!!!!!
Passenger side. More later!
Careful with the pictures you post here - we don't want Fowlhunter to get too excited!
I'd say if there were any leaks you wouldn't need a stethoscope to hear them.
It made quite a bit of difference in sound at the motor and at the tailpipe,
hey USMC can you or anyone else that installed these headers post a video? Looking to get them for my 08!!!
Done!! Took it to my exhaust man and he put the stethescope on it and no leaks--woo hoo!! Almost feels like the engine got freed up a little bit and wants to GO!!! With the radio off I think I can actually hear the fuel injection and valves. Sounds GREAT at start up and at about 2500 RPM's, I'm pretty impressed with the sound! Thanks to USMC for his technical help--you are da man Sean!! Highly recommend!!
I agree with Main One - if I remember correctly, that split is supposed to be there.
