Topic: NGK TR-55 Plugs

Ok, guys just bought some coated shorties for the avy, and with them got a good deal on some 8mm spiro wound plug wires. So figured if I put them on I would run some hotter plugs. After doing a lot of work with LS1's we always ran NGK TR-55 plugs, so figured with the avy having a LS based motor I would do the same to match the new wires. My question is, has anyone ran these plugs? Will these work for the avy? I don't see why they wouldn't but figured maybe someone has used them before, so thought I would ask. Any insight would be appriciated, thanks guys!

Sorry i have no input on that.  I been using Denso Iridium plugs.

That just happens to be what the guys @ PT.net recommend to run on naturally aspirated 5.3's. I'm running TR6's in my truck. You'll have to change them more often than iridium or platinum plugs but they are cheap - I gave $0.89 each for mine. I can have them changed out in around 30 minutes.

Thats what I figured man! Where the hell are you getting them for .89 each?? Best I could find was like 2.00 a pop! Hook me up!

I bought mine at O'Reilley automotive in Jeff. City. We've got one in O'Fallon also so you could check at Bratfest or let me know if you want me to stop by and pick some up for you.

I ran them in my '03 .... I loved them .... I went with those plugs and Thundervolt wires

I'm on my second set of these plugs.  I got the 2nd set after about 40,000 miles on the first set, which is about how long they were supposed to last, without taking a look at the first set.

When I removed the first set, I thought they looked pretty good.  I believe I could have probably gotten at least another 20,000 miles out of them.  Your mileage may vary - I drive mostly highway miles.

Since I've got 194,000 miles on yellow fever now, I've probably got at least 60,000 miles on my second set.  If I remember correctly, I think I broke the insulator on one of the second, and actually got a used one from Kentucky Bob or someone else, when he or whoever changed due to a supercharger install or something else.

In between these sets, I tried the E3 plugs that Horsepower TV has been giving good reviews on from dyno testing.  I don't know if they are as good as they say (increases in HP, fuel mileage, and emission reductions) but since I started seeing misfire codes not to long after I put them in, I went back to the TR-55s and the misfire codes were history.  I may give the E3s another try - maybe I had one bad plug.  I think I may still have them.

Ya brother if they are cheaper there I may pick up an extra set! I get them (Oreily part #3951 I think) here for like 2.00 a piece. By the way what does everyone gap theres at for your trucks? I know these burn hotter so you can open the gap on them a bit, and on the LS1's we always ran betwee.050 and .055, figured I may start there, but wanted to see what you guys ran them at.

The -55 in the part number is the 0.055 gap that they are supposed to come with, and NGK claims that you don't have to check the gap.  The ones that I have checked have been spot on, so I quit checking the gap and just put them in.  They come with a hard cardboard sleeve around the spark end so that they don't get banged around and squashed during shipping.
