Topic: leaking transfer case- 2005 4x4

was changing my oil today, 6 quarts royal purple, 1 k&n filter, and noticed the my transfer case was leaking. the front one under the motor for the two front tires, the shaft that supplies power from the back of the tranmission is leaking. right next to the oil filter. any ideas on a good way to fix it, or how easy it is to replace the seal? How much oil does the transfer case hold in the front? and while i am here how much oil does my rear end hold? really how do i tell what it is? sorry about the questions, i know alot, but not the names of things.

are you describing the pinion seal on the front differential? or the front seal on the transfercase?


oh well, it's a PIA either way. I do 98% my own work and I have a pro do them



I forget how much the transfer case holds, just changed mine.   but the rear end is just over 2.5 qt. 75/90 synthetic high presure lube. fill till just below the hole, 5mm?

Maybe you can take a couple pics and post them up.
We can identify what the problem is a bit easier.

Unless you are pretty mechanically inclined and have a nice selection of tools, swapping seals can be very tough.
With pinion seals, you need to make sure you get the pinion nut tightened properly.

Most other seals require the shaft sticking through it to be removed so it can be replaced.
Getting the old seal out can be tricky even with a seal removal tool.

I'm a fan of Lucas full synthetic gear oils.

it is leaking right here. i am a fan of royal purple, so i will be using that. and maybe a little additive to help condition the other seals while i am doing it.

That's the front differential.
Replacing that seal would require you to remove the pinion flange.
Tightening that nut requires extreme care not to affect the crush sleeve.
An old trick is to mark or index the nut before loosening.
Count exactly how many turns it takes to remove.
When you re-install the nut, you tighten it back exactly the way it was.

I noticed, my front diff has some seepage.
When I go to service it, I may consider getting a new pinion seal. It's only about $8. Possibly scratch that. The pinion seal for a 9.25 diff appears to be about $63 at Accu Auto Parts.
Rock Auto has some for around $10.
The only way I would change it is if when I check the backlash and do a swipe, it looks like the setup needs to be adjusted.
I haven't worked on the diffs in my Avalanche yet, so I don't have first hand knowledge of the particulars.
I've set up other differentials though.

 Differentials can be screwy getting the right parts sometimes.
My '02 Durango had an aluminum 8.0 front diff that I eneded up having to use some old Nova carrier shims.
Found out later the shims in the install kit were designed to go behind the carrier bearing instead of the race like the factory ones.
Of course, they didn't have a note in the kit.

This is something I need to get replaced soon. I am going to buy the pinion seal this week and try to get at it very soon. Anyone up for helping? I got some tools, but not alot. Could use a hand, or could use some more advise to fix this thing. Thanks

anyone know who much fluid the front axel holds? and how much the rear holds? I figured I would change the diff cover while I am doing this work.

We'll have to see what's up, but if my wife doesn't have some thing planned, maybe we could do it this weekend.
I'm working on the differential in my Conquest right now. It's out and I'm replacing the half shafts and seals.

Yes, pinion seal.
I don't know, but if you buy 2 quarts , it should do it.
They have different weights. The counter guy may be able to tell you what is recommended.

at least 2 for the back, I think mine was more like 2.5 qts. Call a parts store and they should be able to tell you. I've looked in my owners manual and can't find those capacities.

I guess I will try that. I plan on buying the parts next month, before the snow gets here so I dont have to worry about my four wheel drive. what i plan on buying is... struts, diff gasket, front pinion seal, already did front wheel assembly and rotors, transmission pan gasket and filter, and for those of you at brat fest....... A NEW BATTERY, i think i have worn out the factory one. lol. i also just bought some diodes and did full time drls, auto fog, all 4 on high. i am going to get the parts to do the wig wags later tonight online, got to wait for direct deposit of paycheck, got to love that. anyway, i got some tools, probably all i would need, "maybe", got buckets for all the fluid, and ramps, jacks, stands, and a/c with impact if needed, i dont tend to use it too much, unless rotating tires or need it to break something loss.
