I used Dawn dish soap to clean mine first with a scotchbright pad. Make sure you rinse it real good after you're done scrubbing. I would avoid any harsh chemicals as they might alter the makeup of the plastic.
Do you mean one of the green scotchbright pads? Did it scratch the cladding?
very lightly. and no it didn't scratch the cladding. Main purpose of it was to get the bugs and other junk off the cladding.

Tape, tape, tape! Tape off everything to avoid getting any on the paint. Apply in shade, preferably during low humidity. This will aid in drying time. A little goes a long way. Latex gloves or similar. Before and after pics.
You will want to use latex goves or similar. All I did was use a terry cloth rag to apply. I also did nothing to the cladding before using it and it turned out great You will to be in the shade when you do it.
