Topic: Preparing "plastic" for Refinish Restorer?

So, I should be getting my RR in the mail today or tomorrow!    I've browsed the posts but I didnt really see the answer I was looking for.  For those of you that have used RR before, how did you clean the plastic before you did it?  I have used the Back to Black on it before and would like to remove any residue of that off there before I put on RR. 

I was just thinking a strong dishsoap/water mixture, and a non-abrasive dish sponge and go over the plastic....any thoughts?

I used Dawn dish soap to clean mine first with a scotchbright pad. Make sure you rinse it real good after you're done scrubbing. I would avoid any harsh chemicals as they might alter the makeup of the plastic.

Do you mean one of the green scotchbright pads?  Did it scratch the cladding?

very lightly. and no it didn't scratch the cladding. Main purpose of it was to get the bugs and other junk off the cladding.

I gotcha. I want to paint my cladding but I'm not sure I have the nerve to do it just yet.

You will want to use latex goves or similar. All I did was use a terry cloth rag to apply. I also did nothing to the cladding before using it and it turned out great You will to be in the shade when you do it.

Tape, tape, tape! 

Tape off everything to avoid getting any on the paint.

Apply in shade, preferably during low humidity. This will aid in drying time.

A little goes a long way.

Latex gloves or similar.

Thanks Chevy.  Yeah, didnt even put thought into taping.  I was planning on just using a thin piece of cardboard to keep between the paint and the cladding.  But I like the tape idea, especially since ill put putting on multiple coats. 


Tape.  Check.
Just bought the latex gloves.   Check.
Apply in shade.  Check.
Low humidity.  ARG.  I live on the coast.
Before and after pics.  Check.  Battery charged.

4 hours and counting, and Ill be on it.  ;)

It came Alll the way to EGYPT!!!!    

I'm gunna start with the Bed Panels... then when I figure out how exactly I want to apply this stuff to the rest of the viechle I'll go forward and do the rest of the Cladding!!!

I've been lazy...  but I'll try to get some "sort of before" and "sort of after pics" up soon...

I already put a coat on the back bumper and the handle/ top part...   Defintely brought the gray color back, not disappointed at all..  but I just wish it would darken it!!!   Haha, I saw all the pictures of the 03 and up cladding that had been refinished and restored and I got all excited!!!   

2002 cladding is just plain light gray...  which is fine!!!  but I'd be happier if it darkened more...  maybe I'm speaking too soon.  I'll get out there and finish the job

The only thing I can say is to check around all the local auto body supply shops. I found one locally that carries it when I wondered in there one day.
