Built a bike rack, What do you think?
« on: June 19, 2009, 07:38:31 PM »
I needed a bike rack to hold 4 bikes and the tonneau racks are super expensive, I came up with this. I had a buddy bend me up the channel, I had the square tube and the "C" pieces are from a bigger hunk of tube I had, I have about $5.00 into it so far, Still need to paint it. Solid as a rock and works great, Went for a shakedown run tonight and no problems, What do you think?

Good eye.   The green bike is a 68 Schwinn Stingray Deluxe witha 2 speed kickback hub. (my rider) The blue one is a 70 or so All-Pro (wifes) the red one is a early 80's Schwinn Pixie (daughter) and the black one is a 07 Re-pop Schwinn Stingray that I am in the process of converting to a 3 speed stick. (sons)
We are going to Mackinac Island and taking the bikes so it should ge a sight.

My brother had the green one without the handbrake and the hub when we were kids. That was a long time ago. Come to think of it, it was around the early 70's when we got our first Schwinns.

Niiice,

My first Schwinn was a Yellow Stingray with a 5 speed stick shift.

I could ride wheelies all day.

( I like to keep this saying for the ladies but it will work in this context as well )

NICE RACK.

I keep coming back to view these pictures as we too have bikes but i am one lazy son of a gun.  I wont ride or walk to the corner.  Yet,i like the looks and dont mind having a setup like this.   Is this a permanent mount?  Easy to remove and install?

No, It takes about 10 minutes to put on. Basically what you do is remove the tonneau and place the "C" shaped pieces in the correct location. (I have measurements) and clamp the covers down. At this point you have 4 "C" shaped pieces sticking up out of the tonneau, Place the rack on top of the C pieces and thread the T bolts down into the recess in the aluminum plate to clamp them together then tighten the top nut and it's done.
This was also the first thing my son (10) has ever welded on, I let him weld some of the channels to the crossbars, He thought it was pretty cool and he didn't do half bad.  :goodstuff:

Anybody think you'll see 40 years from now a collection of bikes you can buy today at Walmart still in use like this?  They sure don't make them like they used to.  I can still recall when my parents bought me my first and 2nd Schwinns.  I was old enough to mod the 2nd one, an Orange Manta Ray.  That came from Schwinn as a 5 speed - I modded it into a 10 speed.

That's a great job. Now that I see that setup, you could use that for almost anything, not necessarily just bikes.

Bullbar, Sailpanel LED'S, Elec Tgate & Sbag Locks, Custom Decals, Ventvisors, Lund Bug Guard, Amber's, All 4 Hi FTDRL, Mag Lite/Fire Ext Mod, Headrest Monitors, bedslide

Excellent job.

We've been looking at getting a trailer hitch rack, but maybe I'll make one of these.

Hope you don't mind if I swipe some of your ideas.
