Fowlhunter has a Diablosport Predator 87 Octane Tune
« on: June 03, 2009, 07:46:48 AM »
We got him set up last night with the 87 octane tune. He's going to drive around for a while to see if we can keep the 2k-4k timing bumped a little once the computer adjusts for the new settings or if we will have to drop it back down to the canned tune parameters. We had a litle knock in that rpm range only. We adjusted shift points, firmness, and times. We also eliminated torque management and adjusted the computer for his larger tires. We plan to adjust the injector slope at a later time after the computer has time to learn and adjust for the new programming.

It will be interesting to see how the tune affects gas mileage on his upcoming trip once the programming settles down.

I also gave him a ride in my truck. I'll let him chime in on his impressions.

Damn Joe, you beat me to it!! I was going to get something posted this morning but the phones here at work got kind of crazy.
I first want to say, many Thanks to Joe for his help installing the Predator tune in my Av!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   :yourock:

As Joe stated we adjusted a few parameters on the 87 octane tune, the difference is amazing!!!!!!!!  Did I say  :yourock:??
We had a little knock in the 2k-4k range after we (He) made some adjustments so we (He) dropped it back a little. I'm going to keep an eye on the tune we put in last night and run a better grade gas on my trip to PA next week, maybe I can bump the timing up again, hopefully the better gas will help the knock?

It will be interesting what my mileage looks like on my trip to PA!!!

OK, the ride in Joe's AV, that was unreal!!!!!!
It was hard to believe I was in an Avalanche!!!!!

Good deal!  :yourock: Joe.

Are you bringing that with you on your trip?  When can do a quick check of your fuel trims while you're here and see where they're at.

yeah, should get the LTFT's / fueling dialed in first via the injector slope setting, before adjusting the WOT timing and stuff...  you may very well find that once you adjust the fueling correctly so that your average LTFT's are in the 0 to -2 range, that you can bump up the timing some more - since you'll have more fuel at WOT after the slope adjustment...  cuz I haven't seen one yet that doesn't run on the lean side and needs to have the slope adjusted to anywhere between -3 to -8% to richen it up a little, cuz the trims were off and positive...

and after a flash, things should be relearned in 50-75 miles...

I had to change the slope -5% with the Predator on mine. That was from the base Magnacharger Superchips tune that was supplied with the kit. I also had indicated that things will get relearned and should settle in some after a couple of days of driving.

Listen VERY closely to what Monte is telling you.  My Av was running very LEAN.  This may explaing the KR you guys are trying to adjust.  I would DEFINANTLY get LTFTs in the 0 to -2 range before adjusting timing.

(FYI.....Monte can do one heck of a tune for you if you want to have a guy with the CMR software make you a custom tune.)

I guess one of these days I should let somebody who knows what they are doing use the Hyptertech programmer that I won on my AV  :dunno:

I had a Hypertech.  It is very easy.  Doesn't have the flexability of the Predator, therefore it is really hard to screw up.

Maybe should arrange a time for you to do it when I can be on the phone with you and talk you through it?????

restore your original stock backup tune to your truck from the hypertech, and then sell it...

and then buy a Diablosport Predator...  it gives you a lot more flexibility, and power/performance...

If he hasn't messed with something as straightforward as the Hypertech after owning it for four years, he doesn't need more flexability.

Quick question, my AV is still under warranty, so is this something I can do or should I wait for the warranty to expire?

If you're not making any permanent changes like efans, then go ahead and do it. You can always restore the program to stock before you take it in for work.

You're all set then. You can tune it, tweek the tune if you like and save it, then return it to stock if need be

The only real problem is if your truck breaks down hard on the road and you don't have a chance to get it reprogrammed.  I can't say for sure, but I don't think most service techs would catch onto your program not being stock anyway.  If they reflashed your computer for any reason, you would loose the hypertech tune.  You would have to let hypertech know what happended and you would have to send the unit back to Hypertech so they could set your unit up to download their tune again.

Same thing for the predator? Where is the best place to get one?

I'm a former Hypertech owner.  Not to up on how the Predator folks do business.

Can get them numerous places, all for about the same prices for new units.

When I sold mine on ebay, it seemed like the used handheld programmers were selling there for about half of their new cost.

Check eBay, truck enthusiast websites, and do a Google search. You may have to watch for a while before you find a used one for a decent price. If you are really interested in better performance out of a handheld I would definitely recommend the Predator over the Hypertech; I've owned both and there's no comparison.

It's pretty easy to find a new Predator for $369 but if you shop around you should be able to find one for less. One caution: just make sure, if you are buying new, that you buy from a Diablosport-authorized retailer. If you don't, and you have problems with it, Diablosport may not honor the warranty. Diablosport charges about $100 to restore a programmer in the case of an event like you asked about.

You might also consider getting a custom tune instead (I would recommend Nelson Performance or Blackbear) - you can get one for somewhere around $250 and you can get retunes for the cost of sending the pcm back to them. The only problem here is that you would be without your truck unless you buy a second pcm and leave the original with the stock programming. If you go the second pcm route you will most likely have to have a crankshaft relearn done on the new pcm and that will set you back roughly another $100.

bear with me on this. so with the custom tune I don't need a handheld or anything. just pull the pcm and send it in?

That's correct. Obviously you should make arrangements ahead of time if you go this route so that you are without the truck for as short a time as possible. You could avoid the necessity of a crank relearn if you go this route.

Or you could try to find a local tuning session. Blackbear was just in Kansas City last weekend, I believe. He's been traveling around a lot. Take a look on Performancetrucks.net as that's where I saw the threads posted.

Heard from FH a few hours ago. He should be in Canton by now visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I got this in an email from him
"Just gassed up East of Richmond, 17.536 MPG!"

I don't know what his driving habits were so far, but that beats what the window sticker on these trucks advertise

Here's a link to a Predator on PT.net:

http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/showthread.php?t=442653

If you decide you want it you should jump on it since they don't normally last very long. He wants $225 shipped for it and I'd hate to offer him $200.

I'm out of town this weekend and on a business trip next Monday & Tuesday. Then we leave for vacation on Friday and won't be back until July 3rd or 4th. We'll have to look at sometime after that. I'll give you a call if I have some free time before then, unless you want to come help repair a drain tile tonight!
