How easily do the inner bed panels come off?
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:42:55 PM »
Will the wheel wells show once removed? Any tips to getting them off? I am talking about the vertical sides of the bed, Are they removeable?

The reason I am asking is I want to get it undercoated and I figure the more stuff I can remove the better job they will do W/O having to drill holes. I am going to take all 4 door panels off and have them drill from the back of the rockers for access.
So, What's the steps to get them off? Has anyone done this?

Thx.

This is what it looks like with everything removed.  The plugs and caps only remove the plastic from the metal that is backing it.  And the back of the rockers have holes in already?

What kind of mod were you doing to strip it down that far??? Looks like you have taken the saddle bags, bed panel rails and everything off.  :wtf:

It started with something simple, trying to get some wires from inside the cab into the saddle bag.  After about 2 1/2 hours it exploded into what you see there.  I have it down to a science now, I can get that part off in about 30 minutes.  In fact I have to do that again, last time I re-assembled it I forgot to put a spacer back in (and I need to add a power cable).

I hope I never see this on my truck.

That's a pretty impressive tear down.

It is not difficult once you do it once.
Remove the drain grid by the cargo pockets.
Remove the inner sail panel by removing the 4 fake screws and the one real one under the third brake light crosspiece.  Unclip it and remove.  There are three interconnecting clips around the opening and several on the outer edge, and one or two clips by the back window that the piece will slide out of.
Remove the grab handle (3 bolts)
Open the cargo pocket lid, remove the bolt below the catch (on the inside of the pocket).
Remove the 4 bolts under the cargo pocket lid and the two that are under the drain grate.
You then will have to remove the hidden screw back by the window, it is hidden under some weatherstripping.
Slip the weather stripping off the back of the plastic piece you just unbolted (by the grab handle), lift up gently and pull and wiggle it towards the back of the truck, then you will have to twist the part slightly, pull it out of the weatherstripping.  Now that the part is loose, you will have to turn it, pull it etc to remove it from the truck, be careful as this long piece is all made out of plastic.

Now you have complete access to the wiring harness for the cargo light(s) and the area around the cargo box (to insulate if you wish to).

Now for the big part.
Drop the midgate with the glass in it.
Pull the mat out and the grate in the bottom of the bed.
Remove the 4 cargo tie down bolts.  The side is now only held in by the weatherstripping at the top.
Peel the weatherstripping back and the side including the cargo pocket will be free to remove.

ALWhite, keep in mind that if you're going to have that undercoated you may want to line the saddlebag area after they are done. I've seen undercoating get soft and messy once it's heated up and I don't think you'll want that all over the saddlebag area.

I was actually surprised how much dirt got back in there.  I also found out the last time that my cargo drain was just about clogged up back there.

Wow, Thanks for all the info & tips. Do you need to work from the top down (sail panels and upper bed trim) in order to get the side panels off?

Thx..
