Painting the brake calipers
« on: May 16, 2009, 07:49:19 PM »
Ok, I know many members here have painted their calipers and with these Denali wheels of mine I need to something about it. It's either paint them or get a set of dust covers which really look

For those of you who have done this before, what paint did you use and why?
Also, what color should I go with?
Here's a pix of what I've got now.

Dupli-Color Calliper Paint.

They're under $15 at your local auto parts store.   I think they have  Red,Yellow,Silver and Black. ...maybe Blue too but not sure.

I use RED,simply because it gives that sport look to my AV. :winkani:

He's got a drop kit in it. I'd bet the springs were red when he got them.

How much prep is necessary to hold the paint? I am going to do this, just a matter of when. I'm thinking of hitting the caliper with a healthy amount of brake parts cleaner then the paint when they are dry.

Will this work or is there more?

I didnt go that far.....

I only washed them with car soap. Let dry and apply paint.   3 coats.  That was 3 yrs ago,...today they still look good.

If i remember right,i think it came with a cleaner, brush and paint. :dunno:

I wiped mine down with acetone when I did mine about 4 or 5 years ago.  Paint has chipped off in a few places, but they still look fairly good over 100,000 miles later.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

Very easy to apply after masking everything.   What sucks is,the need to remove each wheel to do such mod buck2

The wheels I don't mind, but do you have to remove the calipers or just slip them off of the disks? (Where's that :dur: smiley?)

I would say remove the caliper from the rotor. Only because it would be a pain in the arse to mask off the rotor area.

I tried to remove mine the other day to change the brakes and couldn't get the dang torx bolt out. Any pointers on that one?

I was looking around for one but couldn't find. Ended up not needing to change them after all. But I would like to paint them before long so I guess I need to get me a cheater bar.

When I did mine, it was easier to remove the bolts for the bracket that held on the calliper than to remove the calliper from the bracket.  Oh, and those aren't Torx bolts either, standard hex head

When I did mine, it was easier to remove the bolts for the bracket that held on the calliper than to remove the calliper from the bracket.  Oh, and those aren't Torx bolts either, standard hex head

My 04 uses a t55 for the front calipers, what year is yours?

That's how I realized I didn't need to change the brakes, I removed those bolts but you can't get the pad out then can you?
