July 31, 2009 GTG In Indy
« on: May 14, 2009, 12:13:37 PM »
Currently I am planning to spend the night of July 31st (Friday) someplace between Indianapolis and Bloomington.  My plans may change but that is what I am currently thinking.  If anyone wants to meet up give a shout.

*update-we will be meeting in the Sam's club parking lot around 7:00 pm or a little earlier.  At that point we will decide on a final dinner location.

I live west of Bloomington.  Could make a little gtg, although will be pretty busy most likely around that time.  We'll have to see as the time gets closer.....

We are going with my son's Boy Scout Troop to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia the first week of August.  I'll have to double-check to see when they are planning to roll out of town.  I'm thinking we should be good for July 31st, but we may be rolling out the next morning.  Let me check with the boss at home.    :knuppel2:

I find that slightly funny that you are leaving the area with the Boy Scout troop when about 2,000-3,000 Boy Scouts roll into the area for NOAC.

I'm guessing that NOAC is National Order of the Arrow Conference?

I attended part of one during my scout days when it was at Miami (Ohio) University and I lived about a half-hour away.

My son was tapped out last summer; is currently an Ordeal member of the local lodge.  I took him to the council's summer camp a couple of weekends ago so that he could do his Brotherhood service weekend, but he wasn't feeling 100% (he'd been sleeping A LOT more than usual) and we decided to turn around and take him home after me driving the AV over 10 miles of gravel road to get there.  Dang the truck was dusty after 20 miles round-trip on gravel.    :yucky:

You got me.  I am driving the AV out there with supplies and gear while a bunch of others fly.  My truck is covered with camp mud from back to back weekends there.

Seems like we aren't leaving town until the 6th.  July 31st should be no problem, unless work has me on the road.  Seeing that it's now only about 3 weeks out, what do you have in mind?  Dinner somewhere?

I know the wife would like to go back to the drive-in theatre south of Bloomington.  Starlite Theater is the best drive-in that I have ever been to.  It is surrounded by tall trees.  They seem to have no problem with people bringing grills.  It's like a football-game tailgating atmosphere, at a drive-in.  There's usually a line forming before 7, and thanks to our governor, it doesn't get dark here now that we are on western edge of the eastern time zone until nearly 10.  People get there early, fire up the grills, toss frisbees, just have some old-fashioned fun, until it gets dark enough for the movie to start.  I think they start the movie trailers for upcoming movies during twilight around 9:15 or so.

Here's a link:  http://starlitebloomington.com/default.htm

What do you think?  $7 per adult.  We might be able to attract a few other AVs, and get there early enough to park together and tailgate/socialize for a couple of hours before the show starts.

I was thinking dinner someplace or a breakfast Saturday Morning (the rest of my crew should be rolling in about 10:30 or 11 am), I have not been watching this thread as I have been doing other things to prepare for my upcoming trips.

Dinner on the 31st we could possibly make that, way past my bedtime for a drive in theater though, lol.

I've been busy with/planning trips myself, LOL!

Last week, eastern Kentucky.
This week, Jacksonville, FL.
First week of August, Blue Ridge Mountains, VI.
Rest of August, Australia.

Maverick, you are the out of town guy - what kind of food/how much money, are you interested in for dinner on the 31st?  (Looks like we can get Didit to come down if we do dinner.)

The limited amount of research I have done on the area I did see there is a Sonic in Bloomington.  I was thinking about that, but I do not know what else is in the area.  I hope to be looking into that in the next few days.

Upon recommendation from several people I need to try the local White Castle (there is none in Pennsylvania for some reason).  So I am going to suggest the White Castle in Bloomington, between 6-7 pm Friday the 31st.

I am open to suggestions, I was only looking at the quick food places before.  Is there a cracker barrel around?

I haven't eaten at White Castle in over 25 years, LOL!  I ate at them a couple of times during my college years at U of Cincinnati, and got sick each time.     However, my getting sick may have been more caused by activities before going to White Castle , or as we sometimes referred to it as, Chateau Blanc.     :winkani:

Yes there is a Cracker Barrel, and it is easier to find coming into town as it is right on Indiana 37.  I forget the name of the exit off of 37, but coming south on 37, after the Indiana 46 interchange there will be a stoplight, and then you need to take the next exit.  It will dump you out right beside the Cracker Barrel.

I've been invited to the Senior US Open golf tournament being held this year on the north side of Indy.  The fellow who invited me told me he wouldn't want to stay until 5.  I should be able to get to Bloomington in that case around 7.  How about meeting around 7-7:30.  I'll actually be leaving the AV in the Sam's club lot, 2 exits farther south, while at the golf tournament.  We can meet there and then decide what we want to do.  Buffalo Wild Wings may be a good choice as well.

Didit, are you and Lu coming down?

I had little internet access on Sat and Sun so here goes...

I am doing the Castle on Saturday for lunch, so I can wait till then.

Meeting at the Sam's Club lot would be perfect.  I can get there early and pick up needed supplies.

You should be able to easily spot Yellow Fever in the lot.  I'll probably be parked near the entrance to the lot, away from the store.  My boss parked his brand-new 3/4 ton Chevy there overnight a couple of weeks ago when I drove us up to Chicago for a meeting.

Just as luck would have it, while going south this morning to Jasper, looked over at the Super 8 and low and behold Steve was leaving the parking lot, so I pulled over made a turn and ran with em down to Bloomington, I kept lookin in my mirror something is totally different from last night, hmmm so I took his exit and waited for traffic then rolled the window down and asked him if he'd had breakfast there was a McD's just up ahead, nope he was gonna pass ... was in a hurry, howver I did notice that he shaved, now talk about cleaning up, lol.
