Does this count as a mod?
« on: May 04, 2009, 09:43:17 AM »
Maybe this could count as a mod: I built a 10" hitch extension that allows clearance to drop the tail gate while our bikes are loaded. The extension is locked to the truck via locking pin at back of hitch, under the truck (near spare tire).

The set screw shown limits up/down travel, which keeps the bike rack from bouncing. The Locking pin prevents the unit from being removed from truck. The extension is fastened to the truck with a threaded pin, which draws the extension to one side of the receiver, thus eliminating side to side wiggle.

The bike rack is pinned to the extension via another threaded pin, drawing the rack tight against the side of the extension, again eliminating side to side wiggle. Another hole in the extension is home to another locking pin that has a 8' steel cable with forged eyelets, so the bikes can be locked to the hitch extension, which allows me to run into a store or restaurant without losing our bicycle investment. Everyone always says "oh, they'll be ok. No one will take them." but all it takes is one butt hole to completely ruin our day.

Now I can get into the bed of the truck without unloading the bikes if I need to!

This cycling hobby is what occupies most of our free time when the weather is good, thus cutting down the number of opportunities for meeting you guys at GTG's. This and the arcade.

Looks like a mod to me... now you need the e z lift for the tailgate (if you already don't have it)

I almost had a psychic girlfriend, but she left me before we met.
