Knock sensors 2002
« on: April 21, 2009, 01:40:58 AM »
I was looking fwd to a custom tune but my AV had other ideas :verymad:
The rear knock sensor decided to die after 170K. I decided to do an upgrade also. I knew I still had the old intake gaskets that are prone to going bu bie. I set out on EBAY.

I won new Green gaskets for $30 or so shipped, Better than $80+
ordered 2 knock sensors for $50 from global
Chevy says to build a dam of silicone around the rubber plug to keep water out

I read 100 posts on-line about what was gonna happen...lol I'm used to the old intakes and this wasn't so bad. I had 1/4 inch of gunk under the intake. I plugged, scraped, scrubbed and vacuumed for an hour. When I was snapping the gaskets on the intake I looked at my injectors........... Every 2 mo or so I have tried adding injector cleaner, STP and normal gas station CRAP. What a waist.   My Injectors were nasty! Half clogged and did I say nasty. my dealer wants $95 apiece $795 all 8......OMG ..... Did I say, I will NEVER pay them that! :tickedoff:  So I set them in cleaner, tip only. and set out to get rid of what gunk I could. That stuff was tough.

Well the Av now runs Awesome! New Injectors are still coming , from some were.  The Dealer still wants $130 to clean them, Guess thats going toward new to me, ones...lol

It was a casual Sunday afternoon/evening. I took a 2 hour break to decide what to do about the injectors. While they soaked.

I didn't really clean the injectors, you need pressure!, I just removed the baked on crap on the ends. I think I have gained 20 miles out of the bottom half tank of gas, since doing this. Very good considering I'm romping on it left and right. Hell my leg is cramping up from holding it of the gas while cruising. I've been fighting the 13 mpg it's been getting for the last 2 years. Every thing I did would put it up to 14+ then fall off. I hope this takes!

Anyway I soaked the ends in carb cleaner. took a wire tooth brush to the gunk. Then rinsed with spray cleaner. I notice the outer ring on the bottom freely spun on the cleanest one. so I dipped the ends in air tool oil and spun every one of them then hit with the spray cleaner again. the gunk flew!!!!! At this point I didn't care if they lived long or not..... Hit the O-rings with the oil and put them in

I took no pics. I was finally embarrassed by how dirty it was.......

Hey man,no need to be embarrassed, you had no clue what it looked like in there. Like you stated, you tried running cleaner in it pretty regular.

I think it's time we start pressuring a certain person to have a mod party at the "Mod Garage". Now where's CDW when you need him.

The injectors come out easy.

Take off the cover and remove all the bolts on the top the intake 6-7 of them and one nut, so the harness and the throttle cable mounts are loose. Were the fuel lines come to the fuel rail on the drivers side you take out the torx screws 15T i think and remove the Little retainer plates. do the same on the passenger side and remove cross tube. Don't lose the O-rings,3 of them.

2 torx screws hold each fuel rail in place, remove them. remove the wiring harness from the injectors. There is a grey retainer on each plug. The retainer unclasps from the wire, tip it to the side and pull it up out of the connector. Once pulled out, pinchthe release tab of the connector to pull off the plug. once all the injector wiring is gone the rail with the injectors pulls out. O-rings is all that hold them in, clips hold the injectors on the rail.....

See, easy.

they clean the injectors in-place with the engine running nowdays so don't pull them to take to the dealer....

Throttle cable??? oops, I forgot that you have an 02.

I had a terraclean service done on mine last year. It seems to be running good at 106,000 but now I'm curious about how well that stuff really worked. Thanks for the info on how to pull the injectors if I get that bored and decide to look into it.
