Tuning from Nelson Performance
« on: April 16, 2009, 09:56:09 AM »
I'm in the process of ordering the wiring harness and the tuned/activated PCM to control my 05 GM electric fans mod.  I want to try to bring the Ole girl to life a little (No tire smokin) so I was thinking about having NP remove a percentage of the TM but what is that number???  I was also thinking about having them change the shift points in the tranny but once again what RPM's should I have them shift the Ole girl????

Keep in mind, I'm not looking to run the Ole girl at the strip and I'm not looking to smoke the tires, I simply want a little more performance and maybe a little better gas mileage from her!!  Any help here is appreciated!!!  I occasionally run her with the tow/haul mode on, she seems to have much more life and I like the way she shifts and when she shifts.

Thanks, FH

If you are fairly stock, ie no nitrous, or forced induction, then I would eliminate all torque management.

My transmission shift points may be more aggressive than what you are looking for, but here is my WOT shift rpm settings:

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

Here are my non-WOT shift points based on vehicle speed and throttle position.

Once again, these may be more aggressive than what you would want.

Also keep in mind that my higher than stock stall speed converter effects how I have set up my shift points, particularly for low to mid throttle situations.

AND that you have a cam which breathes to higher than stock rpm's.

Doesn't the stock cam/head combination start floating the valves @ around 5900?

Wouldn't you want to at least consider adding a Corvette Servo even to a stock tranny/engine power level if you eliminate torque management?

Steffan - I would suggest you talk with Allen and discuss with him what you are looking for. He's very familiar with our trucks so once he knows what your setup and goals are he can provide what you need in the programming.

I started running at least close to this high when the truck was much closer to stock than now.  Of course with the cam, it keeps pulling at the higher engine speeds where when stock it was dropping off.  If I didn't have the cam, I'd probably be running very close to this.

The Corvette or other servo upgrade is a good idea, even more so if you eliminate torque management.  That said, eliminating it all together without a servo upgrade I don't believe is a big deal, although you will probably want to consider just how many miles you want to get out of your transmission versus your performance interests.  I've got a billet servo, no torque management, and have a dyno sheet showing slightly more hp at the rear wheels than what the engine was rated for at the crank.  For a frame of reference, I've ridden in a couple of AVs putting out about 200 more hp at the rear wheels than mine.  My tranny has about 180,000 miles on it.  With the servo installed and that many miles, these days it is shifting about like when it was young before the servo was installed.

WOW!!!!  Valuable information!!!!!!  Thanks to all!!!!!!
Now I may wait to remove the TM because I'm just not ready to do the servo in the tranny yet.  banghead1
That might have to be my next mod (after the efans)!!!  Where can one find the Corvette servo?  Like I said, I'm not looking to convert my Av into a tire burner or a strip runner but simply try to gain a little more throttle response, better gas mileage, and stretch out the shift points.
What is the purpose of adding the Corvette servo to the tranny?  My Av has 109,??? miles on her now, I would love to continue to drive her everyday as I do now without any major down time.  Does the servo simply firm up the tranny?

Thanks, FH.   :yourock:

You can likely buy the Vette servo from the dealership. Oregon Performance sells them on eBay and through their website. You'll find them on eBay also. The servo firms the shifts up by increasing the apply force to the clutches. You get less slippage with the Vette or a billet servo.
