DiabLew tune...
« on: March 29, 2009, 08:06:09 AM »
Ya I know the name sounds bad but.......

06monteSS (Lew) on the DiabloSport site does custom tuning for guys with Predator programmers.  I'm thinking that I'm going to take the plunge and let him tweak the Buffalo's tune file for me.

He has a lot more experience at tuning than I will ever be able to do right now.

So.......It's sort of like hiring my own DiabloSport professional tuner

Any comments??

yes, you need the power adapter and serial-to-serial cable, or the serial-to-usb cable, and a couple of diablosport apps...

what model and revision is your predator??

when it boots up to the main menu, there is a number at the top of the screen, that's the revision number....

I have the VR7193

I registered the product when i got it but really didnt look into it as in to learn on how to use it.  The only thing i did was to upload it per instrucions after i installed the blower and removed the "torque management".   I didnt mess with the shifting points or anything.

The only issue i have is,   i installed better servos,shift-kit,seperator plate and now i have a slight delay when shifting to second gear.  Maybe upping the pressure lines fix this? I dont know.

Is the adaptor available for purchase?

well, if it's a delay in the shifting, it'd be the shift speed you'd need to adjust, not the pressure... the line pressure adjusts how hard it shifts into gear...  the shift speed adjusts how fast/slow it shifts into gear...

as for the power adapter and cable, you can get diablosport's pc interface kit, or can buy the stuff yourself from a radio shack or walmart cheaper....

you'd need to get:

- 12VDC, 1.0A Power Supply, 2.5mm x 5.5mm Plug - center positive

- 9 pin, Male to Female, Straight through Serial Cable Extension  --  IF you have a serial port on your PC...

if you don't have a serial port on your pc, you'd need to get a serial-to-usb cable...

and, since it's a couple years old, you're probably on a 2.xx revision - so you'd need to download and install the GM PC Interface application to your PC in order to import/export tune files...   http://diablosport.com/downloads/predator/GM03_07Predator_Interface_108.exe

great, now I got to do this....lol. It never ends
First you'll lose your mind
then any free cash laying around
Awesome mods will bloat your credit limits
Acting like a crack addict, refinancing your home, farm out the kids......
You'll cry yourself to sleep, stuff like, must get new rims.
Lift it skyward or drop it like it's hott.
Important questions like, polished or chrome, will shadow you day and NIGHT.

If you have the same tune loaded that they emailed you, you're good as long as you still have that tune on a hard drive somehwhere.  I saved the new tunes  in 3 different locations.

I got to drive a 1000 miles next week, maybe I should leave well enough alone.

ok, were do I send em?
heh heh heh,,,,,,,hard drive c, d and a portable hard drive we have is where I've got mine stored.   You can always copy the tune that's in the avy now, Maybe change the name on it as "usethisone.3CL"(or whatever the .ext name is)  and put it in your DS folder .

Remember to do the save current tune step with the predator!

1.Power the Predator up in the vehicle and select ?Tune it? from the main menu.
2.Go through the disclaimer until you see the next menu and select ?save current data?.  (Now be aware that mine was hidden under another menu item called troubleshoot)

3.This process will take a few minutes, and when finished you will be asked to cycle the key.
4.Once the vehicles current data is saved, you may unplug the Predator and connect the tool to your PC with the serial cable and power it up.
5.Open the 99-02 or 03-06 PC interface software.
6.On the Predator, choose ?Options?, then leave ?PC Communications? highlighted.
  7. Under ?Upload from Predator to PC, press the ?Vehicle current file? button.
8.Name the file or leave the default name. Be sure to use the same file extension if renaming the file.
9.Press OK on the PC, then enter on the tool to begin the file transfer.
10.There is a status bar in the lower left hand corner that shows what % of the file has been uploaded.
11.Once complete, you will see a message stating ?Upload complete?. The vehicle current tune is now saved to your PC.

and, since it's a couple years old, you're probably on a 2.xx revision - so you'd need to download and install the GM PC Interface application to your PC in order to import/export tune files...   http://diablosport.com/downloads/predator/GM03_07Predator_Interface_108.exe

Been traveling and haven't checked in for a while - You guys got Lew to sign on & offer his expertise I see     :crazydance:  :fast:

I've had a custom tune from him since last summer and my MPG barely dropped during the winter, even after upgrading to a 22" wheel/tire combo. Most of the drop can be attributed to warm-up time as well, as the mpg was fairly consistent when on the road.

He can do so much more than the handheld Predator b/c he owns the software suite. It's just like having HPT.

I only wish they would've been able to figure out the TCM. That's the only issue I have. Firmer, faster shifts would really be nice, as well as being able to remove the TM. Oh well, it's a helluva lot more powerful than it was stock, so I have no real complaints.  :goodstuff:

You can adjust those shifts by yourself in there. I've done it before.  :wavey: And if you mean the torque management for TCM, That can also be turned off. I bet Lew shut it off already in your tune.

Hey Mighty!!!!  yeah, WB got me!!    :idiot2:    HAHAHAHAAA!!

yeah OBB, you have an older truck with a single PCM that controls both the engine and tranny, so that's why you're able to do it..

the newer ones have a seperate ECM and TCM, and since there's no TCM support for the newer vehicles, yet, we can not adjust any tranny settings at all at this point...

Well during a trip up and down the highway today I monitored my ltft's, They were coming in consistantly at 0 and -0.78 so it's pretty close to where it needs to be.

blaaaah, that's right.. another oldie...  hahaha..

eh, it's a log easier with a log.. won't be able to see everything all at once that you need to...

need to watch for any KR, and if there is any, you need to know at what rpm it happened at, and what the KR value is at that rpm point where it happened, and what your ltft's are at (should be 0 or slightly negative the whole time you're WOT)...  and you don't have any AFR parameter on that older one either, so seeing what your AFR is at to be able to adjust your WOT fueling is not feasible...  I mean, I can still adjust it, but without knowing what the AFR is, is not good...

The system without a wideband installed isn't measuring AFR anyway.  (With stock narrow band sensors, system dithers around 14.7; at WOT applies a multiplication factor to add fuel beyond long-term fuel trim level.  If long-term fuel trim is negative, applies a zero long-term fuel trim while in WOT.)  During a log, you'd be seeing only what value it was targeting, not what it was actually achieving.  It should be simply reading out what it was programmed to do from the factory (my 03 stock multiplication values below, coolant temp above 32 degrees):

RPM   AFR
1200  1.148
1600  1.195
2000  1.195
2400  1.195
2800  1.195
3200  1.195
3600  1.246
4000  1.246
4400  1.289
4800  1.336
5200  1.301
5600  1.301
6000  1.301

Without a wideband to actually measure the AFR, the next best bet is to look at the narrowband sensor voltages.  They won't give an accurate reading, but you can tell if you are likely pretty far off.  They should be around 870 to 910 mV.  If they aren't in this window, then adjustment to the MAF calibration is in order, if you are happy with the AFR enrichment values.

At least that's how I'd do it......

I wouldn't go by the narrowbands either...

when I first got into all this a few years ago, I did that... and going by those narrowband numbers they tell ya to shoot for, when I added more fuel to get up to those values, it made my car RICH as hell....

once I really got into it and learned a lot more, I don't change my WOT fueling at all anymore... once my LTFT's were dialed in correctly, it was right where it should be - 12.6 - 12.8...

but for the trucks, they seem to run on the rich side, even when the LTFT's are dialed in...

and as far as the AFR value reading on the predator, it's just about dead on for N/A vehicles...

have had a few guys with gto's and vettes do dyno runs with a wideband and their predator's hooked up to log it... predator AFR value was just about dead on as compared to the wideband...  only off by .1 or .2 -- on the richer side of what the wideband was reading...  wideband was reading 12.6, 12.7 and predator was reading 12.5, 12.6....

If your MAF is well calibrated, then you should get good agreement.  If your MAF calibration is off, then your AFR will be off.

Dyno with wideband is a good thing.  Was pretty pleased where the dyno put my AFR.

naah... that's not way rich... it's not bad at all...  WAY rich would be +10... hahaha...

you can adjust your injector slope -2%, and you'll be golden.

have you adjusted your injector slope before at all??  if you have, then just go to the left another -2% from whereever it's set at now...  i.e. if it's at -4% already, then make it -6%...

if you have not adjusted the slope at all before, then the adjustment slider will be at 0, so adjust it to be -2%.

I guess I should get ambitious and check my LTFTs. I changed the injector slope some time back and have never followed up to see where they ended up. I've also got to work on my 1-2 shift a little as it's still too firm since the HD-2 shift kit and billet servo were installed.

You guys change injector slope to fix your fuel trims?  Interesting.  I adjust the airflow calculations.

I'm currently happy with LTFTs between 0.5 and -4.5.  When your fuel trim is positive, it is fixing a lean condition, so no it itsn't too rich.  I showed some up near +10 yesterday when it was over 70 degrees out.  Will do a log tomorrow morning when it is forecast to be below freezing.  Trying now to get consistent readings across the temperature swings by adjusting ambient air temp versus coolant temp bias values.  My trims were going quite positive when the mercury dropped.

My last tune was showing I was going in the right direction - after tomorrow morning we'll see where this tune is.  Will probably adjust the MAF calibration on the low end (where I've got positive trims) in the next tune to get things into the desired range - may need to tweak the VE table as well.

yes, the predator handheld adjusts the injector slope to make changes to the fueling/ltft's...  there is no airflow adjustment available on it...  and actually, the actual parameter it adjusts in the tune file is:  "Injector Flow Rate vs kPa"

imagine the tech support nightmares if the average user had to figure out all that airflow calculations stuff!!  hahahaha...

I have access to the MAF/VE stuff in the tunes via the CMR software (like HPT), but again, that's not something the average user needs to have, or should have, available via the handheld...

the injector slope adjustment is much easier, and more consistent than having to deal with airflow curves and such (IMO)...too much fluctuation, just like you described with yours...

I  haven't had to change my slope setting in about 2 years since I got it dialed in... and my ltft's have remained consistent to what they were when I got them dialed in back then.

;)

well, if it's a delay in the shifting, it'd be the shift speed you'd need to adjust, not the pressure... the line pressure adjusts how hard it shifts into gear...  the shift speed adjusts how fast/slow it shifts into gear...

as for the power adapter and cable, you can get diablosport's pc interface kit, or can buy the stuff yourself from a radio shack or walmart cheaper....

you'd need to get:

- 12VDC, 1.0A Power Supply, 2.5mm x 5.5mm Plug - center positive

- 9 pin, Male to Female, Straight through Serial Cable Extension  --  IF you have a serial port on your PC...

if you don't have a serial port on your pc, you'd need to get a serial-to-usb cable...

Is this 1 cord?   Say,USB on one end and the 9 pins on the other?   Im home now and getting ready to go to wallyworld.

yes Blue, one cord... usb on one end, and serial on the other...

it should also come with usb drivers for the cable that you'll need to install on your PC so that the cable is recognized by everything....

also, do you have any instant messenger??  I have AIM, yahoo and msn messengers, so I can do any of those 3....   it makes things a lot easier/quicker when trying to work with someone and questions arise and/or info is needed...  and I'm sure there will be once you get that usb cable and try to make it work... hahaha..

you can PM it to me if you do...

How to correctly log:

I start up my car and let it warm up for about 5 minutes, and with it already running - I hook up the Predator. Let it boot up, and then select the Diagnostics menu. Then choose the Real Time Data menu, then select the "gas general short" option (less items to scroll through compared to Complete), then on the next menu, choose the "select from a list" option. This will give you a list of all the parameters it can log. Use the up/down keypad arrows to highlight a parameter to log, then select it by clicking the center button... it will put an asterisk next to that parameter to show you that it's selected for logging. then scroll down through the list and select any others you want to log. Some of the parameter names are long and you can press the right arrow button to have the text scroll to the right so you can read it. Remember, the less you select to log, the better the log will be - because you will get a better/faster sampling rate and a longer log. With the parameters I list below, I am able to get a good 20-25 minute log file.

http://diablosport.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=917

The problem with my version is, once i get to "Real Time Data menu",it shows just that.  Live data.  No option to select the "gas general short".

yup... you can not log... you'll have to view the ltft data live on the screen while you drive.. and either have someone ride with you to watch it and write down numbers, or have a real good memory and watch it and the road at the same time...

you have any IM???

He can do a screen shot and post it here.

He's been too skeered to tweak his tune with HPTuners.      :idiot2:

HAHAHAHA!!!

Gotta admit tho Main...  for the average user, that shit's intimidating!  with just a spreadsheet of numbers/values, who knows what to do what to how many, on the 4th Saturday of the month, that was preceded by the previous Monday of the 5th week in the previous Month while during a full moon at the given point while both Sun and Moon occupied the same space during daylight hours.

well, as long as the logs contain the correct info I need...

air fuel ratio (aka Equivalence Ratio)
commanded throttle position (or Accelerator Pedal Position)
engine speed (RPM)
long term fuel trim bank 1
long term fuel trim bank 2
spark advance
total knock spark retard

or the equivalents of those parameters/values...

Actually I think you can send it in and they will upgrade it for somewhere around $100.
2002 LPM Z71, factory 4.10s - Magnacharger w/3" pulley, TOG's headers, 216/224-.551/.551-115 cam/pushrods/dual springs/titanium retainers, built tranny, Yank TT2600 stall converter, 24K GVW Tru-Cool tranny cooler,  Flex-A-Lites, ProCold intake, MSD wires & TR6 plugs, 20" Panther Juice 6's, 2.8" rear lowering springs & assorted hardware, J&J Enterprises stainless grille, body-color painted taillight covers. Self-tuned with HP Tuners software.

Cracked rear bumper cover from a run-in with a deer in fall 2008!

Exactly. They change out the hardware for the latest version. Kinda like changing out your motherboard on your computer with better guts and software.

It wouldn't be very hard to just take a cruise in the Blue Devil and take a quick peek at where your LTFTs are aligned.  I cruise down the highway to look at where LTFTs are at and a WOT run to check for KR.....

No upgrades needed..you got the HW to do that...

Just sayin'

correct - what he said ^^^^^

no need to HAVE to save logs... just see what they're reading while you're driving steady....

and also, didn't waste buying the cords... you're gonna need 'em to import/export tune files anyway  ;)
