It's been a bit slow around here so I thought a game of 20 questions is on order.

See if you can figure out what mod I was working on in the garage until 10:30 last night!

All right Mike, I'll indulge you some.

I did have a hard time figuring out how to answer this question, which is why I also readdressed it some later.

Let me say that this mod is yes to "front or back" in the sense that you have, for instance, front and back tires, doors, windows, etc. So I guess it refers to front or back something or somethings on the truck, not exactly the front or back of the truck itself.

I was working until 10:30 the other night masking my wheels so that the powdercoat covers the wheels much like the jeep's on Truck U. Instead of Black, I'm going with Black Chrome:

I got quotes from a couple of other powder coating shops of $75-$100 per wheel. The place I went to initially quoted $175 for all 4 wheels. After I picked the Black Chrome color, which required a clear powder coat on top of the color coat, they told me it would be an extra $40. So I paid $215.

Powder coating is generally a very durable surface coating. Time will tell of course. I could have painted these with a DupliColor rattle can, but I didn't want the wheels looking shabby if the paint wasn't very durable. That's why I decided to shell out the extra $200 or so for the powder coating.

For those unfamiliar with powder coating, the metal is connected to a DC voltage source, then "sprayed" with powder. With the DC source, the powder is attracted via the static voltage and coats the metal. It is then baked at around 400 degrees fahrenheit to bond the powder to the metal. During this baking, it seems to melt onto the metal and gives a very smooth, paint-like surface.

Well, I have to say, it certainly gives a very different look to those wheels.

As to whether or not it is a better look, all I have to say is judging by the way I see people checking them out, they are definitely getting noticed.

I think the most telling is this -

Saw a guy driving a Ford truck checking them out while we were stopped at a stoplight. After giving them a long good look, including looking down at the front passenger side as he crawled beside me. He gave me a thumbs up.
