HELP - The sail panel LED mod
« on: January 13, 2009, 10:00:57 AM »
Hello All,

I have a question to ask of anyone in the Indianapolis area.  Have you or do you now how to install the sail panel LED mod.  I will admit I am not that great at doing those kinds of mods.  I am willing to pay for the service if anyone cares to install them for me.  let me know and thanks in advance for you time.

Many of us could help, but during the winter, the nice mod garage is very handy.

Mine were done at Butch's house.

You may run into an issue that I ran into - the LEDs I bought initially were not of uniform brightness.  A couple if I remember correctly were underperforming.  I had to buy a few more and they were more in line with the others.

:welcome:  Did you already purchase the sail panel leds or are still waiting? I got mine from Oznium.com and am very happy with the results. let me know and I can send ya a link. Some people do get there's from the shack, I have heard those being good and bad. Either way make sure you get the 5 mm ones so they fit correctly.

I love this...everyone helping out

I know there are different ways to do mods like the SPL'S, if anyone else wants to put a thread up in the resource tab that's different than the one there, Please do so.

There are links in the SPL thread for the lights and holders from Oznium

Ok - I have a question on this topic... neither link mentions anything about resistors... are they to be used or does it all depend on what you want the final outcome to be... For an example, I want them to be in sync with the turn signals and brakes...  :dunno:

I almost had a psychic girlfriend, but she left me before we met.

Just to be sure we're on the same page.... As I understand it you want them to work with the turn signals and brake lights, but not as running lights wired to the tail lights. If this is correct, please proceed. If you want to use them as running lights as well you can disregard the rest of this post. Here's pic of the wiring harness you need to build if you want running lights, turns and brakes.

 :blink1: :blink1: :blink1: :blink1: :blink1:

If you get the Ozninum pre-wired leds, that's all you need. They have a resistor soldered in under the heat shrink. If you use the radio shack led's you will need to solder a 10-ohm resistor in each one. The various threads that refer to using diodes and 330 ohm resistors are to enable the brake and turn lights to work at different brightness levels than the running lights.

I have mine as brake and turn only, was a very easy mod.

Well, kind of sorta... They will be on with the lights and when I hit the brakes they get brighter and when I use my turn signal they will flash...  I thought I've seen where this was done by tapping into the trailer/towing wire loom... but I thought they used resistors or diodes or something...

by the way, I've already purchased the lights from Auto Zone about a year ago... just trying to get hooked up...

That being the case you will have to build the wiring harness shown in the picture. If there is not a 10-Ohm resistor on the LED wires, you will have to solder one in on all 8.
