What do you mean you cant find the wiring for it? You loop the wires thru the holes and then tap into the tail lights. I dont remember if i used diodes or not
Well................where's your write up???
Finally we have a write up for this. One question tho'... why didnt you get the flush (flat) LED's?
I prolly put them in the holders wrong.
These are the ones that Moddess reccommended.
No....i meant these flush mount led's http://midwestchevyavalancheclub.com/gallery/1_24_11_07_1_18_01.jpg
Where are those flush mount leds from? I like the looks of those. Although I'm not sure if they would show as bright as OBB's do...I like bright
You can find these at RadioShack for under $2 each. I think all 5mm have the same light output. I reused the excisting sockets. Just re-drilled them a tad bigger to fit the LED's.Mine are pretty visible at night.
I already have some 5mm (I think?) LED's from Rat Shack - am I understanding you right in that you used the existing rings that the screws/clip things come out of? I thought it was all one piece. That would be great not to have to buy something different - I can use what I have
Yes, unscrew the phillips plastic screws, pitch or save them. Then....pull the sockets out and re- drill just a smidge to fit the led's.
Thanks Blue!! Appreciate the info
These are mine..... you dont need the metal nut & washer......you can ditch them.@ Radio Shack $1.99ea.Model: 276-270 5mmCatalog #: 276-270What we found using these is......that the second hole from the top on the driver & passenger side, you need to bend the sheet metal so they can set completely flush....and for the factory plastic socket,...use a 5/16" drill bit to resize the hole to fit the LED.
That's great!! Those are the one's I have!!! Whew - I'm getting these done in Ohio and was hoping the lights I got were the right ones. I'll dig up the right size drill bit and be sure to take it along.
We didnt redrill the sockets just filed down the ribs a little on the light themselves.

Hes been meaning to fix this :winkani:
First I must say that this is a great write up....So I finally went to the local Radio Shack and picked up some of the flush mount LED's. There were only four so four are on order. I installed the lights on the right side as brake only. This looks a little odd with only one side lighting up, but I couldn't wait. Now for the shatty part. After everything was wired up, crimped, taped and put back together....two of the freaking LED's had the lines break off at the base of the LED . Has anyone had this problem using these LED's. #276-0270? Installation was a snap and I got to enjoy a really nice cigar while working through this. I'll be soldering everything when the other four lights arrive because I had a tough time getting my crimped connections to cooperate. I'll have everything finished this Thursday and I have already gotten some comments from our friends who saw me tinkering away. I know I should have waited for everything so I could do both sides at the same time, but I have been dying to try out some of the simpler mods. Hopefully, weather permitting I'll be outside working on the "all four" brake light mod and the "all on high" mod. Thanks to everyone for their write-up's and "how to's" on all of these different mods, this has made everything so much easier. I'm very mechanically inclined, but not electronically.
Here are the LED's: http://www.oznium.com/prewired-ledsAnd here are the holders: http://www.oznium.com/led-holderYou want the 5MM ones. And you want the Plastic 5mm Led Holders.
This is a future mod, just don't know if I would have them blink with the turn signals or just come on with the tail lights???
Okay, get this....I FINALLY got the remainder of the LED's from Radio Slack..eerr shack. It took the staff three trips in to the store to find the order I had prepaid for. I get home and the next day was supposed to be sunny and 70ish. I take the top off the bed and get everything ready. I run back upstairs and grab a splendid Punch cigar and light up. I have my solider gun and everything is going in nice and smooth. I am being extra careful because I don't want the leads breaking off of the back of the LED's again. I get everything together and test the brakes. OMG everything is working, so now I put it all back together. The LED's slide right in with just a hint of friction holding them in place. Now I hit the brakes again to show off to the wife and yet ANOTHER LED dies....the leads broke clean off somehow? My daughter couldn't have pushed the lights in any easier then I did.....So now I'm going to replace all of the crummy LED's with a different light. I don't remember the part number but the bulb has a 25,000 hour life, so it should last a couple of years... I'll get some pics when I'm done. I also installed a line of fire, wish everything was that easy! Now I just need to get the predator and start tuning. HAHA this should be educational!
I know that was my attempt at a Joke, I'm MichiganSilver03 your SS.
I dont understand why are they breaking. Do they break when pressing them in?
That's the only thing I can imagine. I was super careful with these and I still had leads break off. And yea, both leads came off . I'll be installing some different lights soon so I'll keep you posted!
lol....i still cant picture it. I left my wires loose inside the panels.
I'll get ya a pic. When I'm able to get the lights switched out I'll get a pic of my 5.56 annihilating the remainders!
highly recomend these. The Oznium ones w/ the holders slipped in perfect and flush! and they snapped back in just like the screws were there! very satisfied! cant wait to get dark out side!!
Another emphatic vote for the Oznium over the Radio Shack. There's just no comparison in terms of brightness. You do have to be careful, even with the Oznium ones. The problem isn't in pushing them in, but rather you don't want to put much pressure on the taped area immediately below the bulb head. The wires coming out of the LED are WAY smaller than the wire gauge and sometimes the tiny solder joints are brittle. When JohnB and I were putting mine in, we snapped one, and had to repair it. What a PITA to solder such a small thing. Anyway... Moddess found a great addition to these flush mount LED's that for about three bucks instantly makes them brighter and increases the the spread of the light. Check out the Lens Mount, third item down on this page. They fit right over the bulb snugly, and provide 180 degrees of light. They honestly almost double the apparent brightness of the LED's. Not bad for $3.
Which Lens Mounts did you go with, the red or the clear? Thanks
Plus youll have to watch what you load in the back...if you ever haul big loads something might clip the lenses.....just my ya i said it ...."big loads"
just ordered mine from oznium and the clear mounts from super bright leds. thanks for all the great info here on a super mod
I can't believe you don't have these already. Gonna get them done soon or save them for Bratfest?
Hmm now there's an idea.... I could get these done at BratFest.
I read through this entire thread. I might have missed it mentioned somewhere but if you have a 2002, the "snap in" leds will not work. On 2002's there is actually a metal support piece behind the said panel and the sail panels are held in with screws rather than the snap lock thingies. 2003+ yr do not have a metal support piece behind the sail panels. I bought the autozone licence plate leds and ended up having to pull the leds out of the screws and cut the screw down to about 3/4" with a dremel tool so that the wires would not snap off when they were screwed all of the way in. I didn't know that they were different until I saw someone else doing their at the same GTG. If I knew the difference, I would have taken some pictures so others with 2002 could see what they are facing. As many of you know Moddess loves to mod, but after helping me with my sail panel leds (her 1st led mod on a 2002), she will not do the sail panel mod on a 2002 anymore.
I got a big dog............ummmmm.........
Alright can do ....as i am at weekend duty right now. Ill try to snap a pic when i get off.
OH YEA the ol weekend shift......... .......how i feel about beeing here @ 3 A.M......till who knows when!
OK, I have this link http://www.oznium.com/prewired-leds - Where are the little snap in deals that go around the light, Not sure where to look. Also, Is there any way to run them as running lights AND brake / blinkers? Just curious.LK
I have the Oznium lights also and gonna try to get them put in this coming week while I am on vaction alon with rear work light under the rear bumber and lights on my running boards.
A pic of the cockroach and the parts required to install the LED's as running lights, brake lights and turn signals.....
That just hooks straight into the taillights, correct?Anybody know if there are LED's oout there that would 2 different filaments, one brighter than the other for brake lights or would it be the same light? I just think it would be comfusing if all of a sudden the running light started blinking at the same intensity.
The inline resistor going to the running lights will make the spl's dimmer than when you apply the brakes.Think of a resistor as a choke point, it will only allow "x" amount of voltage to pass through it. You put the resistor going to the running lights so they are dimmer than the "unchoked" brake light lead.
That makes sense.
Unless you have an electrical engineering degree, but it's close enough.
ok im getting new to the whole fixing up the av to get taht nice home feeling...is this wiring good for 02 z66 wit claddin?
i just recieved my 5mm led bulbs and covers however the wiring connected to the led bulbs seem really short.. are they suppose to be short? if pictures needed i will post some. it just doesnt seem that all 8 leds will reach the tail light.
ok let me get this straight.. sorry im a noobtastic 21 yr old who can only put gear and weapons together .. i place all the leds in the proper hole.. and then gather the red and black wires i combine the black together and the red together and then i take the black and red wires from the lailight and combine that with the red a d black wires i have tied up?
Yes, that's how they come. You'll need to extend them. Gather the extended reds and blacks together in front of the side box, then run a single black/red pair back to the tail light. (Note: don't connect in series, tie all four reds together, and all four blacks)
ok ty you so much beboy appreciate all the help. now ima go offtopic and ask if the member support donation page is up?
yup
Except I don't think the tail lights have a red & black wire. I don't remember for sure what color the tail light wire is, but it is not red. Take your red wire and connect to the tail light wire. Take youe black wire and fasten to a good body ground, under a nut or put a bolt though one of the holes in the frame and fasten your black wires to that.
Quick question. If I tie the red from the left to yellow, the red from the right to the green, and the blacks to the white on the hitch connector, will the running, brake and the blinkers work or to you need the diodes and resistors? I'm using the superbright leds.Thanks. Chris
You need a ground for them to work. I can't think of what the white in the hitch connector is at the moment. You will need the diodes to prevent backfeed and the resistors on the brown in the trailer wiring to dim the lights down for the running lights. It's been a while since I did this write up but I'm pretty sure there's a drawing of everything you need.
White is the ground wire on the trailer connector.
Here is my mod. running, blinker and brake light all working.
so if i buy the prewired ones off oznium.com i can use the piece the screw goes into on my sailpanels? (04 wbh). or where are yall finding pieces to mount the leds?
do the screws actually function as screws? because i got my drill and tried unscrewing them but they dont do shit. soo do they just pop out?
