Sail Panel Leds
« on: October 10, 2008, 10:13:32 PM »
OK, I've got the LEDs and the holders for this mod and I can't find the wiring for it. I only want them to be running lights so it doesn't take away from my scanning LOF. I can't find the thread for it. Help! Do I need diodes or anything or can I just tap into the tail light wire in the rear lenses?

What do you mean you cant find the wiring for it?      You loop the wires thru the holes and then tap into the tail lights.

I dont remember if i used diodes or not :dunno:

I meant to say I don't know if I need a diode for just running lights.

Used diodes in mine but I have tail and stop light in mine. IMOP do both the stop and tails, they are far enough away from the scanner it will look ok.

I only wired ours to be used ith the brake lights. No diodes used. Loosened the saddlebags and ran the wiring under them to the area behind the tail lights, lot sof room back there.

:kickass: here

Here are the LED's:  http://www.oznium.com/prewired-leds

And here are the holders: http://www.oznium.com/led-holder

You want the 5MM ones. And you want the Plastic 5mm Led Holders.

Here's how I put the leds together with the s.p. plug, Don't know if it's right or not but seemed the only way I could get them to fit.

Remove the grab handles and the 4 30mm torx on the sides of the saddlebag. Also remove the 10mm bolt inside the SB so you can lift it up a little.

Remove the plastic screws in the SP

Fish the wires from the LEDs through BOTH holes *NOTE This pix shows the LEDS in the holders the first way I put them into the holders, pix above are current

Make your connections with scotchlocks. The top one will only have 2 wires in each connection.

I used electrical tape on the wires where they cross over metal in the saddlebags to prevent chaffing.

Connections at the tail light for me. Lower bulb, Brown (driver's side) Brown/white (passenger side) are +, Black on both sides are Ground

Viola

These are only tied into the running lights.

Where are those flush mount leds from?  I like the looks of those.  Although I'm not sure if they would show as bright as OBB's do...

I like bright

I think Mike (didit) got ours from Radio Shack but you might want to ask him though.

You can find these at RadioShack for under $2 each.    I think all 5mm have the same light output.

I reused the excisting sockets.   Just re-drilled them a tad bigger to fit the LED's.

Mine are pretty visible at night. :winkani:

I already have some 5mm (I think?) LED's from Rat Shack - am I understanding you right in that you used the existing rings that the screws/clip things come out of?  I thought it was all one piece.  That would be great not to have to buy something different - I can use what I have  :cheesy1:

Yes,   unscrew the phillips plastic screws, pitch or save them.   Then....pull the sockets out and re- drill just a smidge to fit the led's.

These are mine..... you dont need the metal nut & washer......you can ditch them.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062568&cp=&sr=1&kw=red+led+assembly&origkw=red+led+assembly&parentPage=search

@ Radio Shack   $1.99ea.

Model: 276-270          5mm
Catalog #: 276-270

What we found using these is......that the second hole from the top on the driver & passenger side, you need to bend the sheet metal so they can set completely flush.

...and for the factory plastic sockets,...use a 5/16" drill bit to resize the hole to fit the LED.

Donnie didnt bend the dheet metal...he has 2 LED's sticking up.   Hes been meaning to fix this :winkani:

That's great!!  Those are the one's I have!!!  Whew - I'm getting these done in Ohio and was hoping the lights I got were the right ones.   I'll dig up the right size drill bit and be sure to take it along.

Finally we have a write up for this. :goodstuff:

One question tho'... why didnt you get the flush (flat) LED's?
These are the ones that Moddess reccommended.

After looking at the pix provided by other members I redid my leds and corrected the how to thread.

First I must say that this is a great write up....So I finally went to the local Radio Shack and picked up some of the flush mount LED's.  There were only four so four are on order.  I installed the lights on the right side as brake only.  This looks a little odd with only one side lighting up, but I couldn't wait.

Now for the shatty part.  After everything was wired up, crimped, taped and put back together....two of the freaking LED's had the lines break off at the base of the LED  :wtf:.  Has anyone had this problem using these LED's. #276-0270?  Installation was a snap and I got to enjoy a really nice cigar while working through this.  I'll be soldering everything when the other four lights arrive because I had a tough time getting my crimped connections to cooperate.

I'll have everything finished this Thursday and I have already gotten some comments from our friends who saw me tinkering away.  I know I should have waited for everything so I could do both sides at the same time, but I have been dying to try out some of the simpler mods.  Hopefully, weather permitting I'll be outside working on the "all four" brake light mod and the "all on high" mod.

Thanks to everyone for their write-up's and "how to's" on all of these different mods, this has made everything so much easier.  I'm very mechanically inclined, but not electronically.
Lead, follow or just get out of my way.

Sounds like the mod bug has really bit Kevin. I have not heard of that problem before. Maybe just a defect in the light or something.

That is one of the problems with the radio shack leds.  I have installed about 6 sets of em and have probably broken about 8 of the leds.  You have to be very careful when putting them in so as to not break the wires off.  I have been using different leds for the last couple of Avs I've done, made by pilot and sold at pep boys.  Here are a couple pics, the leds fit in nicely, and the best part is they come with about a foot of wire attached so it is a lot easier to feed it through the panels.  And as an added bonus, they are quite a bit brighter than the radio shack ones   The last pic is for another style of light made by pilot, if you have an early 02 Av that has screws insead of clips in the panels these work much better, they are license plate bolts, instead of the plain leds that work good on the 03+ models.
There are 2 kinds of people: those who Av, and those who Av not!

I've got Autozone license plate "bolts" like pictured above for an 02 AV on my 03, and they have worked just fine for 4 years now and counting, although I replaced a couple right away because straight out of the packaging they weren't as bright as the others.

I've got mine coming on with the tail lights as night-time running lights.  I've seen others hooked up to the tail lights.  It can be a tough choice - I decided not to think about it too much and just went one way and haven't worried about it.

I started putting LEDs in, but I managed to destroy one of my LEDs in the test fitting process.  So until I place another order (and get some spares) I will only have 7 working.

Okay, get this....

I FINALLY got the remainder of the LED's from Radio Slack..eerr shack.  It took the staff three trips in to the store to find the order I had prepaid for.  I get home and the next day was supposed to be sunny and 70ish.  I take the top off the bed and get everything ready.  I run back upstairs and grab a splendid Punch cigar and light up.  I have my solider gun and everything is going in nice and smooth.  I am being extra careful because I don't want the leads breaking off of the back of the LED's again.  I get everything together and test the brakes.  OMG everything is working, so now I put it all back together.  The LED's slide right in with just a hint of friction holding them in place.  Now I hit the brakes again to show off to the wife and yet ANOTHER LED dies....the leads broke clean off somehow?  My daughter couldn't have pushed the lights in any easier then I did.....So now I'm going to replace all of the crummy LED's with a different light.  I don't remember the part number but the bulb has a 25,000 hour life, so it should last a couple of years...  I'll get some pics when I'm done.
I also installed a line of fire, wish everything was that easy!
Now I just need to get the predator and start tuning.  HAHA  this should be educational!

I dont understand why are they breaking.   Do they break when pressing them in?

You know?   On both sides, the 2nd LED hole from the top,you need to bend the sheet metal to fit the LED.    (unless you got ones with short tails).

I have radio shack ones on mine, and yep the wire do break off easy. I had 2 spares because I knew I would break some. Your best bet is to attach a 9 volt battery to the main wires while you are installing them so you can tell if they are working. Also radio shack sells a small 12 volt battery that you can use also.

Dr Didit taught me this trick.

Forget the Radio Shack crap and get the Oznium pre-wired ones. Saves a bunch of time on the install and they are durable.

http://www.oznium.com/prewired-leds

They already have the resistor soldered in and a decent amount of wire in the leads to work with. I have mine wired to brake and turn only and they worked great first time.

Order direct from oznium.com

They're brighter than the R/S and are completely flush when mounted.

That's the only thing I can imagine.  I was super careful with these and I still had leads break off.  And yea, both leads came off .  I'll be installing some different lights soon so I'll keep you posted!

Another emphatic vote for the Oznium over the Radio Shack.  There's just no comparison in terms of brightness.

You do have to be careful, even with the Oznium ones.  The problem isn't in pushing them in, but rather you don't want to put much pressure on the taped area immediately below the bulb head.  The wires coming out of the LED are WAY smaller than the wire gauge and sometimes the tiny solder joints are brittle.  When JohnB and I were putting mine in, we snapped one, and had to repair it.  What a PITA to solder such a small thing.

Anyway... Moddess found a great addition to these flush mount LED's that for about three bucks instantly makes them brighter and increases the the spread of the light.

Check out the Lens Mount, third item down on this page.

They fit right over the bulb snugly, and provide 180 degrees of light.  They honestly almost double the apparent brightness of the LED's.  Not bad for $3.

I'll definitely be ordering some of these as well. Took us all of about an hour 1/2 and even had to go back and reconnect a ground on one of them. We tapped into the trailer harness at the back and put the ground wires under 2 screws in both corners underneath.

Also a lot easier with 2 sets of hands.

Didnt use any lenses...wnated to keep it flush. from my understanding the lenses stick out a bit and so i opted not to use them. Plenty of light reguardless if you use them or not!.

Hmm now there's an idea.... I could get these done at BratFest.    :evil5:
That'll work, we'll put you in charge of removing and reinstalling the tail light lenses.

I read through this entire thread. I might have missed it mentioned somewhere but if you have a 2002, the "snap in" leds will not work. On 2002's there is actually a metal support piece behind the said panel and the sail panels are held in with screws rather than the snap lock thingies. 2003+ yr do not have a metal support piece behind the sail panels.

I bought the autozone licence plate leds and ended up having to pull the leds out of the screws and cut the screw down to about 3/4" with a dremel tool so that the wires would not snap off when they were screwed all of the way in. I didn't know that they were different until I saw someone else doing their at the same GTG. If I knew the difference, I would have taken some pictures so others with 2002 could see what they are facing.

As many of you know Moddess loves to mod, but after helping me with my sail panel leds (her 1st led mod on a 2002), she will not do the sail panel mod on a 2002 anymore.  :needhug:

Our 06 has metal as well. two of ours sticks out because of it. all you have to do is bend the metal tab down out of the way. There have been many others that did this. I need to, just been to lazy. I will be ordering the Oznium as well. I have the Radio hack ones right now but the Oznium are alot brighter.

I didnt think it was that bad.we used the oznium lights so they come ready to go.only problem i had was using the chrome connectors (5mm)we needed to dremel out a little larger hole for them to push in and then no prob! be aware that the top sail panel hole is already larger than the others so no dremel was needed(at least on mine) we tightened them down, ran and connected the wires(the hard part)  then hooked them up.took about three hours with a lot of good conversation in between!

OK, I have this link  http://www.oznium.com/prewired-leds  -  Where are the little snap in deals that go around the light, Not sure where to look.  Also, Is there any way to run them as running lights AND brake / blinkers?  Just curious.

http://www.oznium.com/led-holder.  Yes, there is a thread describing the mod you asked about.  I will see if I can find it and post a link to it shortly.

reply # 7 in this thread starts the write up complete with link to the part numbers from Oznium. I don't have the schematic to do the stop/turns/running lights but I could prolly draw one up.

We also ran the wires down behind the taillight (once removed, there is a hole all the way down behind the taillight) and attached the ground to a bolt under the Av and the power wires to the trailer plug that Jeff had under there for his LOF. I did the same on EWeezy01's as well.

That just hooks straight into the taillights, correct?

Anybody know if there are LED's oout there that would 2 different filaments, one brighter than the other for brake lights or would it be the same light? I just think it would be comfusing if all of a sudden the running light started blinking at the same intensity.

The inline resistor going to the running lights will make the spl's dimmer than when you apply the brakes.

Think of a resistor as a choke point, it will only allow "x" amount of voltage to pass through it. You put the resistor going to the running lights so they are dimmer than the "unchoked" brake light lead.

The wiring is fine as explained in the pix in the write up. The only thing is the lights themselves. Look at yours and see if your cladding has the plastic or metal screws holding  the sail panels together.

Yes, that's how they come.  You'll need to extend them.  Gather the extended reds and blacks together in front of the side box, then run a single black/red pair back to the tail light.  (Note: don't connect in series, tie all four reds together, and all four blacks)

Thinking about this a little more. The write up also has them run in parallel. It's just 4 different connection points instead of one.

If your wires are not long enough to make one big connection point you would need to extend the wires from the leds to that connections point which also adds more connections (more chances for breaks or mistakes).  I will try to test the "series connection" today if I get time.

yup

Except I don't think the tail lights have a red & black wire.  I don't remember for sure what color the tail light wire is, but it is not red.  Take your red wire and connect to the tail light wire.  Take youe black wire and fasten to a good body ground, under a nut or put a bolt though one of the holes in the frame and fasten your black wires to that.

You're correct. The wiring for the 02-06 years is in the write up with a drawing.

ok let me get this straight.. sorry im a noobtastic 21 yr old who can only put gear and weapons together .. i place all the leds in the proper hole.. and then gather the red and black wires i combine the black together and the red together and then i take the black and red wires from the lailight and combine that with the red a d black wires i have tied up?
The black need to go to a good ground. I did that under the side compartment. I went to the trailer wiring with the red wires and tied into the green and yellow wires there. Mine are stop and turn.

Quick question. If I tie the red from the left to yellow, the red from the right to the green, and the blacks to the white on the hitch connector, will the running, brake and the blinkers work or to you need the diodes and resistors? I'm using the superbright leds.

Thanks.

You need a ground for them to work. I can't think of what the white in the hitch connector is at the moment. You will need the diodes to prevent backfeed and the resistors on the brown in the trailer wiring to dim the lights down for the running lights. It's been a while since I did this write up but I'm pretty sure there's a drawing of everything you need.

I have been really happy with mine as the brake/turn signals. I don't really feel I lost anything by not adding the diodes and resistor to have running lamps.
Thanks for the mod.

Part numbers for both the leds and the holders are in the thread or in the "how to" write up in the tech articles section. You replace the screws with the leds.

They're a plastic "keeper" so to speak. Take a phillips screwdriver and back them out. May have to wedge a flat surface under the head of the screw to apply a little pressure for the threads to bite.
