A Hitch In Disguise
« on: November 10, 2006, 08:37:00 PM »

What to do with your hitch when you’re not towing

A standard truck hitch is an essential part of your truck’s towing needs. Most come from the factory able to accept a receiver and with the wiring necessary to easily plug in your trailer’s wiring, hitch and go. But if you’re like most, you don’t tow all of the time and your hitch becomes a big hole in the back of your truck and SUV. One of the most popular things to do with an empty hitch is to cover it up with a hitch cover. These can be anything from a billet hitch cover that slips into the receiver hole to display your trucks’ manufacturer emblem, favorite foot ball team or other licensed logo. Other Hitch Covers can completely cover up the hitch and blend into your vehicle’s bumper. However, if you want to make your hitch more useable when you’re not towing, you can use it as a step. A step hitch has a fold down step to help you get into your truck’s bed or the rear of your lifted SUV. Instead of using your hitch as a step, you can also attach a light system that will assist you when backing up at night. Some manufacturers are even placing a camera in a hitch cover that sends images to your monitor. No matter what you choose, there are plenty of accessories that will make your hitch a more useful tool, when it’s not in use.

Mine has a lump of ice/snow in it  :winkani:

I have a homemade half inch steel Chevy bowtie insert I bought for $20 shipped from a guy in California that traded his Silverado for a Dodge Ram back in '04. I had to take my 5 lb hammer to it last spring to get it loose to use my hitch last year, first time that happened so maybe I forgot my routine maintenance.

I clean the reciever with a wire brush and spray with flat black rustoleum, my insert and hitch are resting in the sidebin until spring cleaning this year.

Same as Flint.......Ice and snow.
I used to have a chrome skill and the eyes lit up red with the lights and brightened when you hit the breaks. It was on my '93 Sierra that I had to park on the road. I think it quit working when people kept hitting while parking.

I have waag front and rear bumper guards, my rear one has had a ding from some idiots hitch at work and more recently it's bowed in, someone backed into it at work again. No telling how many times it's been backed into more gently.

I'm going to start leaving the hitch in the reciever once the snow melts, let them mess up thier bumper.
