Where to buy.....
« on: August 24, 2008, 03:52:11 AM »
Well, I've pretty much decided to repair my bumper damage myself.  I've been reading (and reading...) and it doesn't appear to be so bad I can't do it.  Side cladding and bumper cover should be simple (not easy..) to remove and the bumper assembly I need to replace appears to be bolt on.  I should be able to get the parts for the insurance money & save the $500 deductible...famous last words, huh?!   2funny  I figure if I end up not being able to do it, I can always take the pieces to the shop and have them fix the mess

So my question is - who do you all recommend buying these kinds of parts from?  I've found a couple on line - but that's a chunk of change to drop to an online company you don't know anything about.  Anyone bought replacement parts like these online?

Oh, also on one site it shows really crappy pic of the bumper - can't tell the difference cuz of the watermarks on the photos - but it says "with decor package" or without...what the heck is a decor package on the bumper?

What damage, got pics?      Oh no I just had to ask, lol.  The dealer would probably be the best bet IMO.

Check with gmpartsdirect.com, you should have the part numbers from the insurance. Their shipping may seem kind of high but you should be able to save some money. My Mirror listed at $577 but they got it to me for about $350 plus $78 for the shipping. I still saved a chunk going that route and it's all new gm parts.

Also let me know the part numbers and I'll see about a wholesale price from the dealer, if you can't get wholesale price there.

BUY OEM new. You will be sorry if you buy aftermarket specially if your doing it your self. I work at a bump shop and the bodyguys complain about all aftermarket parts. There usally junk/dont fit right/color might be a little different. OEM is the way to go from the dealer. I had to replace my front bumper cause of a little OOpps! I bought oem from dealer and was way happyer! I replaced it my self and it was a piece of cake! (only cause i had ever tool and clips at my work).

You're right OBB - their prices are good.  But the shipping SUCKS!! Ordering 4 parts, I save 460 over the shop.  But the shipping for those 4 parts is $440.  So I only save $20 for my extra aggravation....Doesn't sound right to me to charge so much to ship that stuff - nothing is that heavy!!  Well, maybe the rear bumper impact bar - they want $158.73 S/H just for that one part!!

Here are the part numbers & the shop cost:

Rear bumper impact bar     #88937342      $644.96
Rear bumper cover            #12335681       326.22
Left rear quarter molding    #93801784       174.15
Pad, rear bumper step        #12335683        48.92

If you can order wholesale Didit - see what they can do - it's a no go here...

Thanks RJ - I worried about the matching color on aftermarket parts, so I agree that OEM is the way to go - just trying to find a less expensive way than full price.  Trying to save paying out the deductible.

Clips?  Don't they come on the new parts or is that something else I need to order???

The clips are pricey for their size.around $4 a piece from dealer, try to save as many as you can when you take off the rear side panel pieces, they're made to break but it can be done  theres anywhere from 10-16 clips per panel  banghead1  or you could just demod Chris' AV and take his rear bumper and panels. he won't need them anyways! Hondaboy! :joke:

I'd be looking into junkyards for something like this.

Most larger yards subscribe to networks and can get most parts.
I was just at a couple local smaller yards, for my other car, but didn't see any Av's.

At the very least, I'd get the structural components from a yard.
Check out www.car-part.com to get you started.

If you happen to have a decent salvage yard near you, you will get a better price that going through a network.

The yard by me laughed when i asked if they had any AVs.... He said the only way they would even get an aV is completly totaled out or been burned to pieces. He said that AVs and big trucks like 2500s dont usly go to the junk yard... they get fixed! hehe

Clips?  Don't they come on the new parts or is that something else I need to order???
Not sure on the rear but for example my front bumper i had to replace didnt come with clips or bolts... you have to reuse yours and if you break a clip you uslly gotta buy all the clips just to replace one. Save them and dont break them getting them out. Panel popper tool works the best and would advice picking a "Panel Popper" up if your gonna be doing alot of modding as i seen your tool box. The clips can be tricky to get out with out a panel popper. I tryed using a flat head screw driver and ended up breakin the clips. Luckly I work at a bump shop and we got endless supplies of clips and bumper bolts.
Hope this helps a little :)

I'd talk to local body shops and see if they would order the parts for you, especially any that have done work for you before. I've seen the clips on eBay pretty cheap so that's where I'd get them.
2002 LPM Z71, factory 4.10s - Magnacharger w/3" pulley, TOG's headers, 216/224-.551/.551-115 cam/pushrods/dual springs/titanium retainers, built tranny, Yank TT2600 stall converter, 24K GVW Tru-Cool tranny cooler,  Flex-A-Lites, ProCold intake, MSD wires & TR6 plugs, 20" Panther Juice 6's, 2.8" rear lowering springs & assorted hardware, J&J Enterprises stainless grille, body-color painted taillight covers. Self-tuned with HP Tuners software.

I'll call Skillmans tomorrow for you Mo and get the prices for you of the part numbers you listed, btw, I guess we learn something new every day, on your lights that I had thought they forgot to hook up a wire, hmmm............ well maybe not, did you get them working yet, I replaced mine and guess what they dance to the music but there is no wire going to speaker wire, lol.  Its got a litte microphone gizmo built into it I guess, the only thing I noticed though is that on mine, there is a corresponding light on the controller by the little microphone icon that has to be on before it will work in that mode.

And I looked to be sure - but I don't have that microphone icon on my controller.  I'll see if I can get more info on the set and pm you...aggravating things... banghead1

Ooops - waaaaay to early to say anything - Didit is checking on wholesale parts for me from his dealer - if the price is right I'll go pick them up there in Indy.  If I save enough in parts, it'll cover the gas to go up and have a GREAT excuse to go visit Didit & Lu and see another part of the country I've never been too...Not sure yet if or when that'll happen...

notice the inclusion of the wholesale price after your listed price which was right on the money!   I can get  these parts for you at this cost plus 7% tax.  No shipping charges! Looks like a savings of over 700 bucks!
Let me know, he did not give an ETA of parts.

Sorry Peggy, but I had to laugh when I saw those pics.  You hit in the EXACT same place as I did.  The metal bumper only sells as one piece, so I have lots of 'pieces' of bumper stored in the attic of our garage.  Along with the original plastic skin that goes over it.  Once I got the skin off the metal bumper, it looked ok, except for the small scuff from the pole.  Gene made me keep the fender skin on the truck, as a 'reminder' of what I did.  I can see the divit in the cup holder area every time I walk past it.  But it's not noticible unless you know where to look.  My bumper and skin cost right at $1000 from the dealer.  Gene and I fixed it within 4 hours of backing into the light pole.  My kids came home from school asking what I was doing to the truck now.  When I told them I hit a pole, they quickly scurried off to the house......they know Mom's attitude when I mess up my truck!

Anyhow, enjoy the 'Fix It' GTG.  Next time 'heaven forbid' that I hit something, I'll let you know, so you don't do it too!

Ok heres the deal, since I live in the city, my drive will handle 4-5 AV's, will probably do this within the next couple of weeks, providing Peggy has the time to come over, if there is enough interest for a larger gathering Butch has offered his place since he can actually park 50 AV's, lol.  Its only another 35 miles from my place to his.  We have a Kokomo GTG the 13th so that weekend is out, unless you wanna come, we could do it afterwards! Which may not be a bad idea either. Maybe Sept 6th or Sept 20th.   Any thoughts, sorry Peggy, I know you want to get this done as quickly as possible but thats the best I can do for now.  Unless you wanna come over for a couple of days thru the week I can do it after I get home from work, lol.

That would be great if he could Mike, but that's a lot of "stuff" to ask him to haul.  Those are all big pieces...either way would be fine.  My getting off work will be a tough thing right now so it might be the first first week of November before I can travel up - I have a weeks vacation scheduled then.  I'll start putting in requests for days off for September and see what happens.  I don't find out until the Wednesday before the day when the new weeks schedule comes out so it will be a last minute deal...

We don't have time to run to Indianapolis again this week HOWEVER if they will fit in the bed without folding the midgate down I will be more than happy to haul them if you can get them to the house. Maybe I can kick your butt in a game of Wii Bowling........... :blink1:

I did not tell you yet but at the Dr. visit this week, the Dr. did not think that Joan's problem with the sun had anything to do with her meds.........that is the second Dr. that told us this. So she did a biopsy of each arm, she will be sporting a stitch in each arm covered by a band-aid.

Let me know....

Just as soon as I can get a Saturday off.  I'm putting in leave slips tomorrow for every Saturday in September.  I could push it and leave right after work on a Saturday, drive up (about 7 hours), sleep a while then head back Sunday.  Wouldn't leave a lot of room for visiting though....but if I can get a Saturday off from work, I'll leave Friday afternoon instead and have all day Saturday to relax and work on the Av.  I'll let you know as soon as I know something... :cheesy1:

Even if you could get the parts there, I don't think she could get them home with that new speaker setup she's got.

No problem at all Butch!!  Like I said earlier - it's a great excuse to get up to  Indiana.  Never been there before   (More miles for my can too  :evil5: )

Aw heck - I didn't even think of that!!  Guess tie them to the luggage rack?    Can't you just see that going down the road?
