Kokomo Indiana GTG
« on: August 03, 2008, 09:23:41 PM »
While visiting the Northfaces for their cookout the ladies were talking about a GTG back here in Central Indiana. This is their idea, I am just running the thread for them. :A:

The GTG is set for September the 13th.

The plan is to meet at the AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE MUSEUM, 1500 North Reed Road (US 31) Kokomo, IN. at 10AM for a chat................ maybe we will steal a idea from Didit and bring some donuts, juice and coffee to snack on before the museum tour.

Around 10:30 we Will enter the museum (cost is $5 per adult and $2 per child). We will plan on spending 2 hours there and after that we will cruise to THE SEIBERLING MANSION
for a tour of this fabulous old home. The cost for this tour is $4 and $1 per child. It opens at 1PM so we will have time to chat a little in the parking lot, that is not a problem with anyone is it?

After the museum tours I know we will be hungry so guess what? Yep we will find a place to eat! Our son and daughter in law live close to Kokomo so I will ask them for a recommendation of a restaurant. Parking, Service (don't rush us), and of course the food will be the priorities!  :4:

As many of you know jomomma has been ill and we have not attended many GTG's this year, we have not hosted any so this will be the first of the year for us, come on out and help celebrate jomomma getting well!

So to sum it up:

                  What: Fall GTG

Where: AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE MUSEUM, 1500 North Reed Road (US 31) Kokomo, IN

Second Stop:  THE SEIBERLING MANSION, 1200 W Sycamore St
We should be here at 1PM.

Third Stop: Late Lunch, I will post the location soon but it will also be in Kokomo.
We will figure 2:30 for lunch.

Last Stop: Butch & Joan's home for BIRTHDAY CAKE & ICECREAM!

Feel free to pick one, two, three or all four stops. All times are approxmite and will depend on how much talking goes on out in the parking lots!  :A: If you think that you may join us later PM me and i will give you a cell number so you can check and see where we are when you are ready.

                 When: September 13, 10AM

Why: to give jomomma a hug (easy please)  :A:

Automotive Heritage Museum
1500 North Reed Road (U.S. 31)
Kokomo, IN 46901
(765) 454-9999

The Pioneer Auto Club began showing cars in the early 1950's. Their early vision of an auto museum became reality in 1998. Visitors to the museum can wander through Kokomo's automotive history, beginning in 1894 through the present. The museum's historic facades feature a 1930's gas station, the Haynes home, and a 1950's diner. Auto industry related displays and around 100 antique and classic cars make this a must-see museum for car enthusiasts.

Construction on the Seiberling Mansion began in October 1889 and was completed in the fall of 1891. The house was built for Monroe Seiberling of Akron, Ohio at a cost of $50,000.

The architecture of the house is a mixture of Neo-Jacobean (Queen Anne) and Romanesque Revival styles. It was designed by Arthur LaBelle of Marion, Indiana. Built at the height of the gas boom in Indiana, the house was originally heated and illuminated by natural gas.

The mansion includes eight rooms on the first floor, seven on the second, and a grand ballroom on the third floor with an entrance to the rotunda outside. The grand porch overlooks the grounds. Interior woodwork includes ornate design and parquetry of native walnut, oak, maple, cherry, mahogany and tulip poplar. The Victorian staircase is stunning. Moorish themes are featured in brass door knobs, plates, hinges, and sash lifts.

Since 1972, the Seiberling Mansion, because of its historical and architectural significance, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of Interior

Yea, I know....I checked with GBT, they could not make this GTG on any of the few days that were available....they were the only ones on his attending list that had been to a GTG here in the past.  We needed to come up with a day that some AV friends form Mi could attend, he works every other weekend, between that and some other commitments this is about all we had left.

We will be eating a late lunch at Harvey Hinklemeyers. I am guessing that lunch will be between 2:30 & 3PM so we will bring a few donuts, juice & milk to hold us over till then. Feel free to bring a thermos of coffee or stop by your favorite coffee house before arriving at the Auto Museum, we will need to finish all food & drinks before entering.

I have let them know to expect us and they promised to take good care of us!   :goodstuff:

Harvey Hinklemeyers is a local favorite, we have only ate there a couple of times but I can tell you they have the best bread sticks and some of the best pizza that you will ever eat. They have several Italian dishes, Mexican dinners plus a full menu of sandwiches and sides all at reasonable prices.

"Aruba, jamaica ooo I wanna take you
Bermuda, bahama come on pretty mama
Key largo, montego baby why dont we go
Jamaica

Off the florida keys
Theres a place called kokomo
Thats where you wanna go to get away from it all

Bodies in the sand
Tropical drink melting in your hand
Well be falling in love
To the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in kokomo"

It would be 7 hrs for us according to yahoo maps...Love to go, but just can't swing it right now.  Got Bratfest, then if I ever get my backside going, we'll have the Bootheel GTG in October...It sure looks like a fun and interesting GTG with the tours you have planned.

Are you planning on spending the night? If you want to come for cake & icecream at our house after the GTG you might want to look at staying in Anderson Indiana, exit 26 off of I 69.

I won't be able to make this one, as I'll be in Springfield Mo on the 12th for work and won't have time to drive from there to Kokomo in time on Saturday.  I do, however, have my eyes on the Bass Pro GTG in Oct.

FYI:

"(Back Home Again in) Indiana" is a song composed by Ballard MacDonald and James Hanley, first published in January of 1917. While it is not the official state song of the U.S. state of Indiana (that honor belongs to "On the Banks of the Wabash"), it is perhaps the best-known song that pays tribute to the Hoosier State.

First verse
I have always been a wand'rer
Over land and sea
Yet a moonbeam on the water
Casts a spell o'er me
A vision fair I see
Again I seem to be

Chorus
Back home again in Indiana,
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight, still shining bright,
Through the sycamores for me.
The new-mown hay sends all its fragrance
From the fields I used to roam.
When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash,
Then I long for my Indiana home.

Second verse
Fancy paints on mem'ry's canvas
Scenes that we hold dear
We recall them in days after
Clearly they appear
And often times I see
A scene that's dear to me
(repeat chorus)

It turned out to be an absolutely fantastic day weather wise, warm and muggy with a stiff breeze blowing the entire day, no rain at all, wooohoooo.
We had 8 AV's and 3 non AV's with 23 people in attendance.  Nice job Butch!
I'll post up a few pics starting with just milling around in the parking lot of the car museum!

Whewww what a day, yes Peggy slept with me last night, uh I mean slept with us last night, grrr ugh I mean slept on the couch last night!  At 5 on the button this morning I was in the garage working on her AV, shortly before 7 we were ready to roll, all done, she's got a new bumper and no dents or crinkles, for now!  LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY PEGGY!
I want to offer thanks to my son who some how amazingly got his butt up this morning as well and came over to help, as well as Sunburst05 showed up at 6 and pitched in, what a group of guys, just awesome!  This last photo pretty well sums up the day, just fantastic all around!

Well my group made it to the GTG in Kokomo, but unfortunately, we got there a lot later than I intended due to the fact that I got woke up at 2 AM yesterday morning with work related phone calls!!!   :knuppel2: banghead1  After being woke up at this hour of the morning, it was kind of hard to go back to sleep and it was even harder to get out of bed and get my gang going when the alarm went off sometime between 5 and 6 AM!!!  banghead1  After finally getting on the road, we spoke with Butch via cell phone a few times on the way out, but unfortunately my gang wasn't able to get to McClure's in time to follow Butch, Mike, and our mystery guest to the museum.  After finally making it to the museum, I was pleasantly surprised to see the entire gang had waited on my crew so we could all tour the museum together (Thanks to everyone for doing that!!)!!     After some brief conversations in the parking lot, the group toured the museum which was full of nice vehicles and then the group re-assembled in the parking lot for some post museum tour conversation.  Myself and the family had a great time meeting everyone and all I can say is "WOW, this is a GREAT bunch of folks to be around"!!!   I think the biggest surprise I had all day was when I pulled into the lot and spotted a Sport Red Av with Flags on the tail end.  I told myself, "No, it can't be MoAv after the week she has had", but much to my surprise it was MoAv!!  :crazydance: :dans2:  It was a real honor to finally meet Peggy in person and all I can say is that she is a WONDERFUL person and personality to be around!!! :goodstuff:  Meeting Mike, Butch, Jomomma, Greg, and the rest of the group was a real honor as well and I will look forward to seeing everyone again in the near future!!!   Below are several pics I took while at the GTG at the Museum.  Unfortunately, my family and I were not able to attend the rest of the GTG events as we had planned to spend the rest of the day at my Alma Mater, Purdue University!!  Go Boilers!!!  :clappinani:

That can't be Peggy's AV... there's no big dent in the bumper!    :evil5:

Seriously though, it was great to see that Peggy was able to get a way for a couple of days and hopefully take her mind off things at home for a little while.   Didit and crew, you guys seriously  :yourock: :yourock: :yourock: and gives more creedence to the saying that "It's not about the AV anymore, it's a family!"

Well I finally made it home everyone.  I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful weekend I had.  Mike and Lu opened their home to me to stay at, and even when I arrived at 1:30 am Saturday morning, were up to greet me.  They went way over and beyond making my stay great.  I woke up about 7am Saturday morning to find that Mike, his son, and Dave had already fixed my Av's bumper - I couldn't believe it!  Again, there just aren't words to say how grateful I am.   They are just an amazing group of people.  Spent the day with the Indiana group and met several more great people.  Even though it was a very busy weekend, and LOTS of miles - I feel great.  Very relaxed and ready to dig into life at home again.  I guess running away sometimes can be a good thing  :cheesy1:

Here are a few of my pics...

Saturday morning in the Dr. Didit's garage..

Forgive me if I get the name wrong, but I believe this is Mongo Rangers Av - I have to send my son this pic - He'll like that decal down the side...

Peggy, I'm obviously biased, but I think your pic (2nd one) of Amber and myself on the bench at the park with Didit, with the AVs in the background, really illustrates what this club is all about.  People enjoying each other's company, with the AVs being our common thread.   :macrocks:

PS - that car that you didn't know was an Oldsmobile 98, I believe a 1959 if my memory is any good.

OK, here are some of our pictures. Jomomma is now the official photographer for our family, I sold my camera and she is doing a good job with the pictures.

First I have a story. About 4 months ago we stopped in at the local IHOP for lunch. There was a sharp orange Avalanche in the lot, we parked right next to it and tagged it of course. We set in there watching to see who left in it but missed seeing them somehow, must have been because we were distracted by that great food?

About a week later a guy calls me and says, hey you left a card on my Avalanche! We got to talking and it was a guy that I had worked with about 15 to 20 years ago! Well his wife had been going through the same problems as jomomma, it sounded like the same story that I told him about her. I told him about the club but he does not even get online...........he did say that someday when the "girls" get better that they would like to attend a GTG.

Well I called him back a couple of weeks ago and told him about the upcoming Kokomo GTG and they were interested! They came out to the house for  a visit on Friday and we talked about the club, Avalanches and just got caught up. We had a good visit and they said that they would be back on Saturday morning at 8AM and we could cruise up to Kokomo together.

I was out packing the cooler, loading the donuts and getting the dog cages in the Avalanche and noticed that it was just after 8AM, no Roy & Jo yet.........so when I was finished I went back up and we set on the porch for a few min. I told jomomma that i would go call them and went in the house where I found the phone flashing NEW MESSAGE.........yep it was Roy. I expected that something had came up and they could not go but ..........................NO!

He said we are setting about a 1/4 mile down the road from your house BROKE DOWN!! We jumped in the Avalanche and headed down there. There were off the side of the hwy and he was on the phone. When done I talked to them and he said he took off from the stop and heard a loud pop and then it wouldn't go at all! He was thinking that he broke a u-joint but I had to be the bearer of bad news, it's your transmission I think............

I offered to take our dogs back home and let them ride up with us. I offered to take them home. I said that I did not want to leave them setting there along the road but they said that they had called Onstar and a tow truck was on the way. He said they needed to stay with the truck and get to the dealer and get a loaner so after a few minunits we left.......it was a bad way to start in the club and with GTG's but they seemed like they will want to attend another GTG!

So here is a picture of them setting along the hwy. and Roy & Jo in their Avalanche, not to happy but they are interested in joining us someday. I will give them a call later today and see what the dealers said or if they know anything yet. I will invite them to the Bass Pro Shop & Quaker Steak & Lube GTG next month and hope they have better luck!!

Talking about gas prices, LOOK AT THIS! kind of makes you wished you lived back then doesn't it...........................Really I remember this type of gas pump. Almost all gas stations has gone to the electric gas pump by the time I started driving, they were a lot different looking than todays pumps but they were electric. This pump requires that you rock a lever back and forth and hand pump the gas up into that glass container at the top. There are markings to indicate the gallons and the attendent would then need to figure the cost. Let todays kids try that!!! A lot of farmers had bought these old pumps and installed them so they could fuel up their equiptment and that's where I remember seeing them........

You could have bought Icecream from a cart like this........

And watched the kids play on the sidewalks......

They also had a Sycamore stump. Hmm a tree stump you ask? Well it was the largest stump that I have ever seen! I do not remember the full details but it was reported to be over 800 years old when the tree died. I remember something about one of the LIMBS being 8 FEET across!!

Did anyone get a good picture of the stump?

That all for now, we did not get any pictures of the eating or the birthday party, forgot the camera and left it in our Avalanche! Thanks to all who attended and made this another great GTG!!!
