Got my bowtie done!!
« on: June 13, 2008, 05:44:16 PM »
Finally got it done...

Here's before:

You can see the part that is broken in the back:

Here's my paint booth!!  2funny

With adhesion promoter...

Starting the paint:

Finished  :dans2:

Closeup:

I have a fancy script "MoAv" decal to put on it when it dries all the way.  It was cut out of reflective vinyl, so it will "glow" when lights hit it  :cheesy1:

Love to, but I don't have a basement.  Or anywhere to go around here, so it's just me and the closet  banghead1  THe first round has passed, second one is about a half hour away...Luckily the tornado hit north of town.  Or rather lucky for me - where it hit is a REALLY nice neighborhood that got leveled about 5 years ago from another tornado...

  Now there's an idea!!

I'm not sure I like the "MoAv" on the bowtie - maybe not the right size?   :dunno:  I'll look at if for a couple days and see what I think then.  I DO think it's crooked tho...(luckily I ordered two so I can change it  )

Finally did mine. Whatcha think? I'm gonna end up redoing it the same way it is now. Just not too crazy about the close up detail but I'm gonna keep the same scheme. I may have to ditch the bug deflector now or get a new one, this one's pretty beat up.

I really like these bow ties and my last one was vinyl but this go around thanks to Aries I'm stepping it up a notch. I'm going 3D and adding LED's

As I said Aries takes the credit for this one I told him I was going with a dragon theme and he promptly said I might have something that'll work call me back this evening. How about a light cover  :uglystupid2: made into a bowtie?

whatcha think before I (clearing my throat) he gets started?

Too bad we never got to see the finished Dragon bowtie, here is another idea.

The chrome on the back of mine was starting to flake, so a scraped off all the chrome plating around the back edge and cleaned it all up. A little red enamel laid carefully along that edge and then sealer applied. It added a nice red outline to the bowtie.

Sealing that edge will hopefully keep the rest of the plating on the interior from continuing to flake off. I guess if it continues, I can part the backing and do the same treatment to the rest of the plating.

This retains the resistance to rock chips and bug damage on the surface. Easy to maintain, just like stock.

The front half of the bowtie assembly is a clear shell. The back side of this shell has a chrome plastic plating. This fills the interior and the back lip, or face too. Mine was starting to peel. I took a sharp gasket scraper, held at 90 degrees and scraped the chrome plating off. This leaves only the clear plastic of the bowtie exposed and cuts a new edge for the plating that still fills the interior.
I then carefully painted that edge with the red enamel. This will not only seal the edge for the plating and hopefully prevent it from continuing to flake and peel, but it also creates a nice outline for the bowtie.
Painting the clear plastic exposed edge offers the same effect that plating it had done. The color is visible through the plastic from the front side. Clear plastic conducts light very well. If your Avalanche has a nicely contrasting color, I could see a body color being used. Mine is the gold dust color and it would be hard to distinguish it from the chrome of the grille bar or gold of the bowtie. That is why I used red.

Thanks for the compliments. It is one of those subtle differences that most will probably not notice :)

How would you get the bowtie off the front of a 2004 Avy?  I want to paint mine Satin Black.  Thank you.

It's been a while since I had mine off, but if you can get your fingers back there, you will notice a couple little clips sticking through.
It only take seconds to pop it right off.

Like back behind the grille?  I'll give it a shot.  Today I'm working on getting my aftermarket head unit in and the LOH mod.  Thank you for the tip.

You have a WBH (without body hardware or nekkid) avy. Yours is held on by 2 10mm nuts. The Bowtie has studs on it.
The cladded avys have the popoff bowtie.

Okay,  I'll make sure I have the proper tools to get it off.  Does anything need to be detatched?  Thank you!

There's 3 or 4 plastic push pins on top of the radiator that's part of the grille. Remove them and you may be able to snake your arm under there to get to them. I have not removed one on a WBH before so I'm not sure if you can reach them that way.

I see.  Well I will have to give it a try.  Or I will look for a video on Youtube to see if someone has posted one there.  Im assuming the grille on a WBH avy is the same as a 2003-04 silverado, yes?

Thank you!
