Fun with a paint marker
« on: June 09, 2008, 09:16:14 PM »
My cladding lettering was peeling already so I got hold of a silver paint marker and redid the cladding lettering with that. On the tailgate I was a little bored so I did the letters in reverse. BE HONEST and let me know what you think.

From a distance it looks pretty good, up close I think it may be a bit much. I can always take a black paint marker over the silver and redo the letter faces in silver again

Looks good from my house!

Really - it looks good from the distance shot. Makes the letters jump out. Can't really tell form the closer pix the quality.

I like it - seems to make it easier to read.  Athough in the picture, the "c" seems to have some kind of line on it that makes it look like another "e"...just my eyes?  Avalanehe?

What is a paint marker?  Something I haven't heard of.

The C might need cleaned up a little.
A paint marker can be found at just about any craft store or hobby shop. It goes on kinda like a marker but is more permanent and is thin and can run if you're not careful.

What is a paint marker?  Something I haven't heard of.

You should get out more  :joke:

I've never used a paint marker but seen them used at GTGs, some people are creative. Letters on under hood parts, chevy bowtie on steering wheel or wheel caps. If you can find one that matches your truck color,... just don't get carried away and paint everything, I've heard they are addicting.

What can I paint next

Just paint your AVALANCHE lettering with your glittery fingernail polish.    :evil5:

I am having the same dilemna OBB... I did my tailgate cladding with a white paint pen, and it looks great from a ways away, but not so much up close.  I think the cladding letters on the door would look good done white as well, but those pens just aren't precise enough to make it look pro up close...

I just put a 2nd coat on the doors and it evened it out better. One thing I did try was using a q-tip to smooth the paint as it gives a broader coverage.

I can weld better faster, maybe you are going too slow ?

I can draw slow and precise but if you're tracing with a paint pen it's like following odd lines welding.

If you do mess it up and want to re-do it, try taking a paper towel and dip it in some gas and that should take the paint off with a little bit of elbow grease, also might try some wd-40.  I had to do that on my dad's '78 chevy pickup on the dash trim, although we used model car paint around the trim.  the spots that ran down on to the dash we just used the gas and wiped it off.  it made it look 100 times better, just like the pics of the cladded lettering on your av's.

The paint marker held up pretty good. I got to the point that outlined the letters just looked a little too much so I cleaned in off and went back to doing the letters. I had to redo them this spring after all the snow and stuff but I just figure on adding a little extra time when doing my spring cleaning anyway.

I like the outline look... and, I've got a silver paint pen still in the package...Guess I know what I'll do when I get home from work this afternoon.

You'll have to watch how heavy you put it on because of the "texturing" around the letters. It will try to "bleed" out of your desired area if you put it on too heavy/fast. Plan on a couple of light coats.
Considering you're an hour or two behind me in time zones,,,I'd have to say you're up early  :wavey:

OBB, did you ever do the letters on your doors?  If so, did they hold up?  I saw my white Av a while ago and the side ones looked pretty scary, but the tailgate one still looked good.  Not sure how good the guy treats the old girl tho...

I just did the letters, not the outline on the door. After a harsh winter they were a little rough but repainting them beats the heck out of buying new decals to put on. However,,,,,my wife now has a scrapbooking machine that cuts vinyl and she's been playing with it pretty good. We've got the avalanche font on her laptop so she can play with that a little. She did the bowties on my center caps on my wheels. Dang, I can't find the pix. I think Skyview posted it on his site.

I've had the Avalanche letter decals on my cladding for 6 winters and they still look great.

Thanks for the heads up...

Yes I get up early...work 4:30am to 12:30pm Central Time.

Still haven't got it done...been raining every afternoon.  :verymad:
