Topic: New Shocks finally

well, my baby has 89,000 and the ride to WV last weekend was like a fishing boat in 3 foot waves. I decided it was time for some new shocks so I put a set of Monroe Reflex Monotubes on the front tonight. Damn, what a difference. $58 each at Advance auto and it took about 1 beer to do both.

After 150,00 miles I'm replacing my front stockers.  I bought some KYB MonoMax shocks after reading good reviews on performance trucks.net.  I was going to install them myself, but since when I had the truck in for an alignment last week and they recommended new lower ball joints, I decided to just let them put them in when doing the ball joints today.

I also have the KYB shocks, they are great!!  The nose dive while braking is pretty much gone!!

The KYBs have stiffened the suspension some, but the ride is still much better than the wife's 99 4x4 3/4 ton suburban.  I'm pleased.  They make the beast more responsive to steering input.

I didn't install them myself, and hence no pictures of the install.

Had asked my mechanic for a front end alignment a week and a half ago, and he told me he needed to replace the lower ball joints first.  Since I set an appointment for him to do that last Friday, I thought it would make sense for him to install them since he was going to be putting the truck on a lift, removing the front wheels, etc, to get to the ball joints anyway.

The KYB shock seems to have good reviews. Would you recommend them over the OEM? I have 54,000 on my 04 Z71 and it is in need of shocks already.

I haven't seen a great difference between the KYB's and the Z66 originals, which were Bilsteins.

You may want to lower the rear tire and take it out of your way just to give you a little more elbow room. It's also a good time to make sure the tire lowers and shoot some lube in there if you've never had it down. Better when you plan on it than getting a flat somewhere and fighting with it then.
