Drilled and Slotted brake upgrade
« on: January 22, 2008, 11:19:55 AM »
I know some of the folks here have done the drilled and slotted brake upgrade along with ceramic pads. My questions is, Do you really have a significant change in "pedal feel" and stopping distance?

I was talking to my mechanic and he stated "No significant change" on just a rotor and pad change. All I want is better breaking with my AV. I know that by going to different calibers, say a 3-6 piston will significantly change the breaking. Being a rather conservative spender, I would like to save the extra money and try to be somewhat cost effective but if the drilled and slotted brake upgrade isn't going to change the breaking so I don't have to pucker my posterior every time I try to do a mildly aggressive stop, then I will have to go the other route. All comments will be greatly appreciated  :goodstuff:

Cross drilled and slotted rotors will work well to dissipate the heat but I heard that if you go 4 wheelin' it's possible to get mud caked into the holes in the rotor and could cause the pads to wear down faster or ruin the rotors all together. So if you don't do much wheelin' then get them. If you do, then you might want to consider just getting the slotted. A slotted rotor will wear the pads down quicker than a stock or just a cross drilled rotor.

Check out this thread.  There is link to superchargersonline.com with good info on this.

A couple of weeks ago I talked to my dealer about my brakes.  I have never liked how they feel when I stop - like you said earlier, I wonder if it would really stop in an emergency.  They feel kind of mushy to me.  Anyway, he took it for a test drive, said they feel the same as any other truck.  I guess I'm just used to the brakes on my Lincoln.  He advised that upgrading the brakes to drilled/ceramic, larger calipers, etc...would help.  But to the tune of about 1800.00  :blink1:  I'm just not sure there will be enough difference to be worth that.   :dunno:

I found this site from Brake Performance that offers dimpled and slotted rotors that are quite a bit less expensive and I believe they are make in Cali. They also have ceramic brake pads for their rotors.

http://brakeperformance.com/site/brake_rotors.php?&vtype=1&vmake=2986&vmodel=3040&vyear=3046&vdetail=3049&cPath=1_2986_3040_3046_3049_3050&ad=google&osCsid=8e4d7010bb72e84508b51ec264e762da

I believe it all came out to somewhere around $800.00 w/free shipping.

Hmmmm.   i like those and price seems fair.   What size are those again?

I was looking at 14" Baer brakes. The works for $2000.   Too much for me i guess.

Good find SoberBiker -I've bookmarked that site.

I have another question about this.  The dealer told me that if I upgrade to larger roters/pads for better stopping power, that I also have to replace everything else like the calipers etc...  If I keep the same size roters that are on there now, will it still help the stopping power if I switch to the one's like SoberBiker posted??  Or will they really make any difference?

I hate being stupid about this stuff... banghead1
