Chevy Exhaust Systems: Chevy Owners Pick Quality Over Sound
« on: January 22, 2008, 10:05:35 AM »

Chevy exhaust systems vary in style and sound. Chevy truck owners discuss what they prefer in an aftermarket exhaust.

According to various forum posts by Chevy truck owners, most prefer to use an aftermarket exhaust system that offers high-quality over a specific sound. Many truck enthusiasts know that adding an aftermarket exhaust system can definitely aid in performance, fuel economy and provide a nice powerful tone.

Although sound is a big factor in selecting the right exhaust system for your truck, many Chevy truck owners also know that longevity, appearance and price also play an important factor in making the right exhaust decision.

From our extensive testing of various exhaust systems over the years, the sound that an exhaust system makes is ultimately up to the individual. Some like it loud, some like it quiet, some like to hear it in the cab, others don’t. The type and pitch of sound from an aftermarket exhaust systems depends on the type of mufflers that are used.

Basically, muffler designs can range from a sound absorption style that uses perforated tubing and sound absorption packing materials, to a muffler design that has no sound absorption materials at all, and uses chambers, deflectors and baffles to cancel sound waves and improve exhaust flow.

The size and shape of both of these styles of muffler also contribute to how loud they are. Typically, smaller mufflers with less packing and/or fewer chambers and deflectors, will be louder. You’ll find most of these listed as race or off-road style mufflers. Most aftermarket manufacturers however, will design a high-performance exhaust system for each vehicle and model application using the best compromise between loudness, a performance sound and price.

Chevy truck owners agree that a single cat-back exhaust is the least expensive design that also offers significant gains in performance. Adding other elements such as dual tailpipes, stainless steel tubing, polishing and more will add to the price of the system.
