Fram BOOST CAI System
« on: December 29, 2007, 10:01:14 PM »
Below is a pic of the Fram BOOST CAI System I installed on my '06 Av about a year ago.  Very pleased to date with tthe performance.  This system appears to be closely related to the AEM Brute Force CAI System.

Yes, it is.  There's a black metal shield that is installed around the filter and the MAF Sensor area to isolate the intake from the hot air in the surrounding engine bay area.   See below.

I've been looking at the Volant CAI but I was wondering something.  I've heard comments that after installing a CAI that people "love the sound".  Is there an additional noise from these?  I love how my Av sounds now-don't really thing I'd want to add anything else that makes noise...What do you think boilers94?  Any extra sound from yours?

You will be able to hear the extra intake of air but, from my experience, only at WOT. I don't notice the extra noise from my ProCold intake at all but it's probably because of the other "whine" when I go to WOT.

I'm with badav on this one, the one I put on my bus had a growl but only when I nailed it which was often considering the size of that thing. My youngest stepson (15) was constantly telling me to hammer on it cause he loved the sound of that intake. hmmm   $3/gal and 12.5 mpg in the city...NOT TOO OFTEN. lol

Peggy. An aftermarket CAI wont add noise while driving.  Only when you step down on the pedal and its just air sucking in. It wont change the sound of the pipes in any way at all.

Whew...Glad to hear it.  I was about to change my mind on it.  I love the FM 50 sound and don't want to change anything.  So the CAI is a go again!!  Now to get those wires/plugs everyone recommends for a good tune-up, the CAI installed, and my Av should be ready to go for anything

MoAv,

No additional noise that I can tell other than the nice "growl" that comes from under the hood when you step on it!!  Definitely a mod that I would recommend!!

Good grief!!  I just looked up the price of a set of those wires and some Iridium (sp??) spark plugs.  It'll be over $100 before I even take the Av in for the tune up!!  Dang, those things better add a lot of git up-n-go for that price!!

call gm and see what the replacement wires are. The delco's for my aurora were $96. I'll spend $100 on good wires if gm's gonna gouge that much for factory replacements.

They should be NGK TR55iX if you are buying iridium plugs. Mick is probably buying regular TR55's or TR6's for forced induction. They are a lot cheaper but the downside is you have to change them more often. I've got a little over 50k miles on the truck and am thinking about changing mine out to the TR6's. You may be going with platinum plugs; they are a little cheaper than the iridiums.

Thread jacked..............what are you talking about?

Cold air comes into the engine, the spark plugs fire, and the injected cold air/fuel mixture is ignited.  2funny

Maybe that's why I like my CAI so much! Open element air cleaners where the first things I got for every car i had in high school! :fast:

OK, got my iridium plugs.  Bought AC Delco since the engine is designed for those, I thought I'd stick with them.  $60 for the set and I got $20 off on my Auto Zone rewards card so $40 total for the plugs.  Got a high performance set of wires - 8mm I think.  have to go look at the box, but all kinds of goodies on them - shielding, heat stuff  :dunno:  Anyway those were $56.00.  Now have to get them installed.  My mechanic said he'd charge $100 to do the install-sound about right???

$100?    Yikes.   I did my own.  I had trouble gettin' the plug on the driver side close to the fire wall tho'.

No garage? Too cold?  I guess i would pay that much.

No garage - and yes - WAAAAAAY too cold!  Anyway I think if I tried to open the hood with a wrench in my hand, my Av would start itself and run away!! 2funny

I have NO idea how to do this, so I'll let someone who does take care of it
