LED cup holder help!!!
« on: July 12, 2012, 07:21:43 PM »
All hooked up....I need a source for the power.  I would like the wire that turns on the dash lights when it is dark.  I hooked up the footwell entry lights, but that wire only comes on when the doors open.  I would like the cup holder lights to stay on at night.

I have it all apart now and I am at a standstill...

I'm sure someone will chime in on how to do that...but....

:nopic:

I'm planning something like this myself - I would like to use a couple of plasma lights I have.

I almost had a psychic girlfriend, but she left me before we met.

pretty simple.  I just don't know what wire to tap into.  I have already messed up my blue tooth connection by tapping into that wire... : :uglystupid2:

Post some pictures of what you have for the cup holders.  I did speakers in my boat and want to do the cup holders.   Thanks!

I do have a bluetooth system installed under the cup holder already.  Any idea what the power wire would look like for that?  I tried the 12V red wire from the radio, but that keeps the light on all the time.

But as as I said before, if it can come on when the dash lights come on....that is what I really want.

I'm thinking of maybe tying into the AC/Heater controls since these lights come on when dark.  So maybe start there, I am trying to google a wiring diagram for that.

should be a wire in the BCM harness right under the dash. I'm getting ready for work again  banghead1 so I don't have time to dig through the pix.

Cool, I appreciate the help.  I will post a tutorial on this once i am finished.  It's a very simple mod once we find the connections.

Is there a link to any wire schematics that I could dig through?  I don't mind spending the time to look.

What if you tap off wire for the radio? Turn key and powers up, remove key and remains lit till 10 minute timer kicks in or doors open.

Edit: Sorry I didnt see the post.
Try the illumination wire if available. Should come on with headlights.

Avman is right. There's two wires to choose from at the radio. The small grey wire is a part of the dimmer circuit for your instrument lights. The small brown wire is part of your parking light circuit. I can't stress enough to use a voltmeter. Reason is there's two of each wire. The other grey is a speaker negative in the front and the other brown is speaker positive in the rear. The radio is going to be the easiest spot to tap into the circuit you need. T-splice and run it straight down to your cup holders.

Good luck,

Steve

I think it'll be easiest to pull the cluster and tap into that wire. Looking for the pinout now.

Pin A11 is a red wire that the service manual says is for "Instrument Panel Lamps Dimming Supply Voltage"

I'm trying to copy the pix but it isn't working too well for me.

VERIFY VERIFY VERIFY BEFORE YOU TIE INTO IT. You should be able to do that with a test light.

Another thought, You have a console right? Should be a wire in the harness right under the cupholder assembly. I'm looking for that wire now.

A couple of things no Leds will not cause issues because all the interior lighting are leds.

There is a lighting circuit in the console already. Check at www.gmupfitter.com for diagrams

Um, the only LEDs in my AV interior lighting, other than instrument cluster message display and radio display, are ones that I installed.

If you get some clear tubes and put leds in the end and them you will be happy. Glow rings.

You may want to get more clarification..., but I THINK this is under the center console.  Those wires should be running right under the cup holders so you can tap in there.

Again - I think.... Hope I don't  :footinmouth:

There is a bunch under the cup holders, especially in mine with the blue tooth setup.  I'll look at it when I get home.  Shouldn't be to hard to match that harness with the pictures.

The harness is under the cup holder.  BUT no wire coming out of the A1 or D3 pins....these are for the dash dimmers...

No, I have looked at both sides.  Those pins are empty.

OK, FINALLY figured it out.  The harness images posted earlier in the thread is the harness that runs under the cup holder.  That harness does not have the dash illumination wires.  I removed the A/C controls.  Behind there is another harness which is similar.  I do not remember the exact pin number, but I used the BRN/WHT wire and it works.  I just tied into that wire, ran it under cup holders, and voila!

I used a drill bit to make the holes then used the same 5mm LED holders from the sail panel LED install.  Used a little glue to hold them in place, though if you use the right drill bit they are pretty snug.  I did not drill through the rubber piece as I can always use that to cover the lights if I don't want to see them.  Any questions, please ask!

Should be the same basic installation.  Just my guess though.  All you need to do is locate the dash illumination wire.
