My Transmission Said...
« on: June 05, 2012, 02:53:53 PM »
"The hell with you, I'm out of here!!" Sunday. I'll tell you the story. I was coming back from doing a wedding gig on Saturday in Waco which is 140 miles from South Austin. The back was full of my dj equipment. Made it back with only one pit stop in Jarrell, Texas. Went to get something to eat at Whataburger and in the drive-through I was experiencing some hesatation. My girlfriend noticed it and I thought that maybe it was the gas because I had just filled up with gas from Flying J in Waco which was very cheap. The truck continued to hesatate all the way home and I thought maybe I need to get some fuel additives. So the next morning I drive down the street to Advanced Auto Parts and purchased Sea Foam and some Lucas Octane boost. Put that in and tried to drive. Seemed like the hesatation was worse. Now this is around Sunday noon traffic and people are coming back from church so it was really bad. So I decided to get on the highway thinking maybe the stuff has to work in. Get on the highway and it was terrible. A lot of reving but not much go. I was able to get to 80 but it felt like a pain. I exited off and limp to a parking lot. Turned her off and put some more of the fuel additives in her. Cranked her back up and tried to reverse out and all she did was rev. Now I'm like WWWWWWWWWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I put her in drive and she goes, but not in reverse. So I get out and push her into a direction where I can drive out of the parking lot. I turned her off to see maybe I could reset something, and then back on and reverse worked. So at this point I'm like, let me go home. So I drive out, barely, lots of revving but hardly any go. Get back on the highway and it just seemed so painful because there seemed to be nothing going on. Finally, the TRANSMISSON HOT message appears and I'm like oh damn. And then she stops from lack of gear. Just revving. I ended up on a bridge with traffic zooming by. I let her sit for a while and then limped some more to another area of the highway, then under an overpass. Funny thing was, a homeless woman stopped by and asked if she could get a ride. When I told her my transmisson was out she just walked off. I call my girl and tell her the sad news. I told her i'll try to make it home. I limped 5 more times from the highway, to a turning lane, finally to a Randall's grocery store parking lot. Called some places for a tow while my girlfriend came and sat with me and ended up with Pep Boys. Crazy thing was the guy who towed me said he had an 06 Avalanche and he said he hated it. Saying that the back end was not tied down from the factory and warranty fixed it but the damage was done and he also said he had a transmission problem and he said he crashed it to get rid of it. I don't know how true it was but I was like "bitch I don't want to hear about that right now!!!" Get it to Pep Boys Sunday evening. Monday they confirm it's the tranny. $2508.26 which includes the $50 tow. Said it was severly slipping and poles were lost. I would have known of the issue if the check engine light would have been cleared from the evap leak that i had but after replacing 2 things myself with the evap leak, I just said damn it, I'll fo it later. So now I'm waiting for the new tranny to come in. Suppossed to be in today. I also have them doing the smoke test and I'll have them repair the leak which they say are 3. To make myself feel better, I told them to install a Spectre air intake kit so when I get her back, I will tell a difference. I'm in my 528I today that my girlfriend usually drives all the time and I tell you I miss my truck ever so dearly. And to make matters worse, I have all my equipment in the back still, and I haven't been able to do any new radio shows and I have a gig Friday out of town in Killeen. SMH.

Sorry to hear about your tranny troubles.  When these things go, they go pretty quick due to the computer compensating for clutch wear, up to a point.

Can you elaborate on "poles were lost"?  I'm not aware of any parts in these transmissions being referred to as "poles".

That's the verbage the guy said over the phone. I may have misunderstood him though.

Sorry to hear of your troubles also...

I have had a transmission go...TWICE...same car (not in my AVY so far, thank God)...both times in Killeen (my stomping grounds between 2002-2007), so I know the frustration...and cost.

Are they charging you for a NEW transmission?  A rebuilt one should be much less.
Are they giving you a warranty with it?

Good luck with it...hoping that you won't have to worry about that for a long while after.

I'm guessing at least $800 of that is labor.....

I'm wondering if the solenoids were lost.  I can't think of anything else that might sound like poles.....

If it was originally just an issue with solenoids, had you not driven it with it slipping you might have been able to get it fixed for a fraction of what you are looking at now.  Solenoids can be replaced by just dropping the pan instead of removing the entire transmission.

It is rebuilt and I'm about to call them during my lunch about the warranty. My truck has 83,XXX on it, do you think I could call GM?

Truck is back. Got it back last night. 1 year warranty on parts and labor. Runs smoother than I remembered. I asked them to have it done by Thursday night and they did. I called them at least 3 times a day ever since Pep Boys had it. I asked them to put in my CAI but they didn't so I did this morning.
