We were there for the snow at Christmas time and left the Sat before New Years.  819 miles to the house in 13 hrs even.  I felt good and had had plenty of rest while I was there and was looking to get back home to the sunshine.  We'll probably be back up that way before the end of the year.  I will be driving the AV (haven't told the wife about the difference in gas mileage between the AV and the Ford Explorer with the V-6   ), maybe we can have our own GTG if we get back that way later on.

I'll clear up my earlier comment for you, I was an electronics technician in the Army. After I fixed everything and put a system in place it stayed fixed. I took on "Calibration" which included everything that measured anything from a torque wrench to oscilloscope to nuclear/biological detection equipment. I didn't calibrate or use many of the instruments but I knew how to do both or learned to real quick.

Easiest task I was ever given, I didn't have to fix it or use it but had to know how to both to insure it was in operating condition. DONE!

I work as a distribution/supplier rep for packaging material and facility supplies.  If you were packaging widgets I would supply you with everything to get them from the machine that makes it to the customer or if you wanted your own personal label on a cup I would negotiate it with a printing company or manufacturer for example. 

I owned my own repair and janitorial company for 10 years (commercial and residential).  We specialized in floors (good old strip and wax) and carpets before working for my current company.  I sold my business to my son as his 21st birthday present.

We make medium duty transformers, mainly for heavy industry and utilities. Our ratings run from about 40 MVA to 400 MVA. It's amazing how much labor and content goes into those gray boxes you see in the substations.

HMMM cups for MAC HMMM   MY COST IS .03 FOR THE PRINTING.  They require art work for the pc and 150.00 set up fee for the cup molds but that can go on anytype of cup and for different cup sizes or different color.  They like to have 2000 cups to print at a time.  Then of course you have to purchase the cups a hard plastic is what I suggest but all of it will be at my cost.


But yes it can be done.

A 20 oz crystal clear plastic cup( soft ) like what you would drink a beer out of at a concert,  would cost about 64.00 per case for 1000.  Total would be about 0.09 per cup.  I will find out what kind of hard plastic is available and what my cost is just for kicks.  We could have them printed and ship out "X" amount of cups per person but it could be done at cost.  I imagine a hard plastic royal blue would be less than .30 per cup.  I will find out just for kicks unless you all are serious about it.  I will also see if my printer guy would waive the set up fee.  ya never know unless you ask.

I changed jobs two weeks ago, my job got eliminated months ago and then I got laid off due to axle strike.

I got the job most everyone wanted, I load the front & back glass for the robots to install on crewcab Chevy trucks. I can take 5-10 minutes off whenever I want as long as I have my conveyors loaded and stick close to watch the robots. Sounds simple ? I have 6 different backglass, 4 rearview mirrors, 2 computer monitor/keyboards, barcode stickers, scanning devices,...  on occasion I will manual install the glass but technically that's my team leader's job if the robots boot one. Leader is happy I got the job, I'm good,..

My body and mind get excersize, one mistake and I can screw up the assembly line for costly minutes so I don't make mistakes or quickly correct them before anyone notices. As long is it's not my fault when the glass cell crashes,....  it looks like a beehive when it does break with skilled tradesmen and supervisors running around or standing around scratching thier heads and asses. Good fun

The power company replaced the busted pole but they installed the new pole 5' away.  Our network didnt reach,so we had to splice a new piece.

Im not done yet.  I have 100prs left to go and tommorrow i should be able to piece out the #10 strand,place a new attachment and wolla.

Im going to try to fit a 7" slick there.  Im out of 9's.

That sir, is not only a network but a media retrieval system wired to every classroom. Every teacher has the capability of calling up media content from the school server or the internet and pipe it directly into his or her classroom. It also integrated the phone and PA systems.

Pretty cool system... especially if you consider we implemented that system back in 1997. At the time, I had 7 school upgrade projects. That particular school was a brand new build. The other six were existing schools that we retrofitted.... I have since sold my company and went on to work for the company that beats on me now every week. Much less stress. I don't miss commercial construction a bit...

about to really change. In these tough economic times I learned back in December that I was going to be "surplussed". Basically a permanent layoff as we don't need that many people anymore. AT&T offered what's called a VSIPP to pension eligible employees. They matched up the retirees (vsipps) with the surplussed employees as our contract requires.
For the first 8 years working for Ameritech, SBC, AT&T I was an installer doing residential and business land line installations. I also did some repair work when needed although nothing too involved. The position I matched up with is one of the most desired jobs in the outside part of the telecom industry. ( I just got lucky on that) I will no longer have to climb poles, walk through peoples houses that are disgustingly filthy or immaculately clean and have to worry about what I might bump into. Or be up a ladder in the middle of a blizzard. My new position will be maintaining the Fiber fed cabinets that bring dialtone,DSL, U-Verse to the areas that are too far from the office to carry the signal through the normal copper wires. It will require a lot of training to learn this (about 3 months worth) so if I'm not on much during the day it's because I couldn't come home for lunch. I'm looking forward to the challenge of learning this new postion as it should require more brainwork than brawn (this is where you call me lazy, go ahead) but will provide some very interesting times. Also, this group has been known to have to haul generators to storm ravaged areas to keep the back up batteries in these units charged up during power outages so you never know when you'll get a chance to actually catch me working in your area if you are in an AT&T service area.

It was a long 2 1/2 months not knowing if I would have a job or not come March16th but it worked out in the end.

We do mostly large multi-story work, hospitals and sports arenas.

As a side business, I am a draftsman and make shop drawings for other fabricators.
The fabricators I do drawings for are non-competitors. Ethically, I am very careful about that.
I don't want any conflicts of interest.

I've been in the steel business since '82.............After typing that I am feeling old.

I was in the steel business when I lived in PA, actually I was a welder but still in the steel business. Most of my welding was done on structural steel.

Lear Seating?  I'm pretty sure we (Alvey/FKI Logistex) have conveyor there? Are they located in Pacific?

So I took the offer. Yes the money is a heck of alot better than Lowes and also better than Crown. So with that being said, I am down to just 1 job now, Thank God for that.

I am one of 3 partners in a Consulting Engineering firm based in Nashville whose primary focus of design is in healthcare facilities.  While not our only area of expertise, it is my favorite type of project due to the complexities of the various systems that go into these types of facility.  Of the 3 partners, my primary concern is with contract document enforcement and compliance.  I interpret the construction documents, respond to questions from the contractors, review product submittals for approval and perform periodic site visits to insure compliance.  We are registered in all 50 states and have been fortunate to have performed work in all but Alaska.  We typically design over 400 projects a year and employ 32 people.  I typically travel 3 days a week and spend Monday and Fridays in the office.

Decks and fences are simple, maybe we'll do welding ? He's a skilled arc welder and I can mig weld.

I left the company I was working for as a project manager to be a "Quality Shop Supervisor"...basically plant manager.
I've known the owner for a number of years.
It's a very small shop and he is looking to bring the company to the next level.
The switch wasn't exactly voluntary on my part, but looking back, it was definitely the best. (My first and hopefully last experience with corporate backstabbing)
The two PM's left out of five are on the verge of quitting if they could find work elsewhere.

So basically, I run a small 9 man structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication shop.
Oh, I'm also the IT guy now setting up a small bank of servers.

Well it's time for an update. Nothing new on changing positions although we've had guys put it for the buy-out. Don't know what the company is waiting on. They let a guy take the buy-out and match up someone on the surplus list to keep that guy on the payroll.
I did get a new boss are report location though. Now, instead of that 1/2 mile commute to work it's 22 miles each way    At least I get to ride this new (to me) bike and enjoy it some.




Edit....I just got a call from a co-worker that they're offering the buy-out again. I could be hearing something today.

Ok, another update. Things fell in line for me this year. I get to stay in my current department. There were 2 people above me on the surplus list, one of them took an inside job similar to an IT dept and the other one above me took the other opening in our department due to two guys taking the buyout. I get to play with fiber optics some more. (well, until they have another surplus which will prolly be in Dec again.  )

Well it's that time of year again. Att has decided to make another surplus. I'm on the list again.     We'll have to see how it plays out this year although I don't think I'll be able to keep my almost cushy job.  About the only good thing at this point is I'm still gauranteed a job and am pay protected through the end of the current contract which is April 2012. Can't wait for another round of storms to hit and they beg everyone to work overtime. Won't happen in Ohio. We don't have forced OT.

It's the same old song and dance. They're just trying to get rid of a lot of senior guys to make the Union weaker for next contract. They also want to move as many as they can into a different department that doesn't have the backbone that the core contract has. Scheduling 6 days and when there's not work they just give you the day off and crap like that.

I work for a paper recycling company here in MA. Technically on the books as a truck driver, but I do what I can there. Bobcat operator, "mechanic", shipping and receiving, assistant supervisor, 2nd shift supervisor, and if things get real bad I'll do a coffee run. I can't complain too much. I have managed to survive 2 rounds off layoffs among the drivers. Not bad concidering I'm the youngest driver @ 34 years old.

I have about 25 years service at GM, should be 26 but I had one extended layoff. The company is turning a profit again, Chevy/GMC HD trucks are selling well so we're working 50+ hrs a week until further notice. Mandatory overtime is a good thing because I'd turn it down if it was an option, this way I can salt away a few more bucks before I retire.

Ok, the not-so-Merry-Go-Round continues with AT&T in my neck of the woods. Just found out today that I'll be offered a position as a U-Verse installer. I have to take it or I'm out of the company. This can be at one of 3 locations with the closest one being an hour drive each way. Thankfully, after a short training period I'll be able to take my work truck home with me so that should save one gas plus wear and tear on the Avy or the bike. Bad news is the scheduling stinks and you won't find out what your schedule is until the Friday before the work week begins on the following Sunday. (6 days a week and they can send you home early if they choose) Seniority means nothing for scheduling. My vacation is now up in the air and Bratfest may just become a dream for us this year. Forced overtime. Not something I care to do. I make enough money that I don't need the extra aggravation of missing family time. Climbing ladders again.  Maybe that will shed a few pounds. Working in peoples homes that have no idea that they should really let their animals outside to use the bathroom (not all areas I work in are like this but there's been a few in the past I walked out of) I am pay-protected so I won't be taking a $14 an hour pay cut (thank goodness) and our overtime agreement still stands that any OT after the first 9 hours a week are paid at double time instead of time and a half. They were wanting to hire people off the street instead of moving "surplus techs from higher paying departments" over there as it blows their budget out of the water but the Union (CWA here) fought that. Now we get to work and get beaten like dogs. It isn't a job I would recommend to anyone unless they are desperate for a job.   Bosses are always on your azz looking over your shoulder just waiting for you to forget one little thing like not wearing your safety vest while you're running wires in someone's basement.

 One more year and my Avy, bike and youngest daughter will be paid off. Time to start looking for something else then.
I guess I'm lucky to still have a job in today's economy.

damn OBB, that sucks.  i am so lucky to have my job, because we are part of a leased out service to a school district, so as long as the district keeps paying for the service, then I stay.  if they dont, we take almost 500 computers that were purchased solely through our services, so we kinda got them by the balls.  now recently, my boss lost his job, due mainly to a goof up at civil service, but it was a reminder that we are all expendable at one point or another.  now, ive developed some bad money habits, one of which is definitely not lapsing on my avys payments, but i thank god that i still have a job.  good luck with your u-verse installer position, and god bless.

Soda vendor now for 8 years.  Had an interview as a chip vendor today, and will probably decline the job if offered to me.  I hate my job, but I don't think this other job is right for me.  Maybe I'll see if I can become a male stripper.
