BlueDevil's Vortech SuperCharger Installation Progress
« on: September 08, 2007, 03:18:37 PM »
So i cancelled my day at the autoshow tomorrow to work on the blower today. The installation so far have been pretty easy inside the engine bay.

Im pretty much dredding on drilling the oil pan for oil return but it needs to be done. (I'l tackle this tomorrow).

Installation of blower stopped the second i found out im missing the five 3/8-16 x 2-1/4 mounting bolts for the blower. Now i need to call those idiots so the send the bolts.

This is what i've done so far:

Removed alternator,fusible link junction box(red box),accesory belt,power steering pulley,fan shroud,engine idler and main braket.

Vortech main bracket installed

Re-installed alternator,idler,power steering pulley.

....and blower preset. I need the mounting screws dammit!!

Now im tired.  Gotta go to a party tonight in the minivan??

Now stumped  :ass05:

Whats wrong with this picture?

The book says drill a 9/16 hole and use 3/8 tap? How can this be possible? The 3/8 tap is a lot smaller than 9/16 rotobroach.

Hmmm...maybe im missing the concept here on step B & C.

You're dealing with a pipe tap, which is different than a regular tap. I haven't taken the time to research the information on the internet - I'm sure the drill/tap sizes are readily available - because unfortunately I'm at work today. I THINK the pipe tap is 3/8-18. You'll have to specify that it's a pipe tap if you want to look the information up. I've dealt pretty extensively with machining at one of my prior jobs.
2002 LPM Z71, factory 4.10s - Magnacharger w/3" pulley, TOG's headers, 216/224-.551/.551-115 cam/pushrods/dual springs/titanium retainers, built tranny, Yank TT2600 stall converter, 24K GVW Tru-Cool tranny cooler, Hooker Max-Flow muffler, Flex-A-Lites, ProCold intake, MSD wires & TR6 plugs, 20" Panther Juice 6's, 2.8" rear lowering springs & assorted hardware, J&J Enterprises stainless grille, body-color painted taillight covers. Self-tuned with HP Tuners software.

Cracked rear bumper cover from a run-in with a deer in fall 2008!

I think you should use the tool on the bottom right of your pic to GENTLY cut your oil pan hole.  Then tap it using the tap on top right of your pic.  After that, Use the tap on the hole.  I think 3/8 stands for the thread size and not the hole size.

Here's a link to a chart.

Ok. I got lots of things done today.

Installed:
-fuel injectors
-Coolant hoses
-inlet & outlet hoses
-attached blower

3 things are left to do:

-install oil lines. (Thanx Rick. Today i learned the difference between Coarse thread tap & pipe tap).  Went o HomeDepot,Lowes,AutoZone & Sears and they dont carry a pipe tapper anymore. I need to check the local plumbing supply store on Monday.I was told they could be 'bout $100?  Crazy! :P

-Valve Bypass
-Tune

oh yeah....the darn engine cover doesnt fit anymore.

Yea, I had alread thought about the fact that he's going to have to cut on that pretty blue engine cover  :(

BTW, I did mine on a bench grinder.  I know that a grinder is overkill for plastic but it made a nice smooth radius and looks factory.  I have since given up on the engine cover because the nitrous lines are in the way.  :-\

One more thing....  drilling and tapping the oil pan was a piece of cake thanks to the rotobroack.  You'll be impressed with how well it works and how smooth the cut is.  The way it's designed, it also kicks about 99% of the metal shavings back at you instead of letting them go into the oil pan.

You haven't even got it running yet and your wanting more?

I like the way you think.  You can scare myscndfvrtride at the next GTG  :evil5:

I wasn't scared for me;it was for my AV you were power swerving towards in the parking lot,you might have spilled the shine!

After seeing many blown street Mustangs and tuners come through our shop I personally think the NOS sett-ups are over kill unless a guy is going to go to the track regularly or is going for a bad ass show boat with all of the tricks.
I have to drive my AV every day and can't afford for it to be down every couple of months for valve jobs from showing off in the juice.
The blower can be made streetable but nitrous is hard on a motor.
We have guy with a'05 Firebird on the bottle and he said he has the heads off a minimum of three times a year cause he can't resist the temptation to "GET 'ER DONE"!!!!

I've had a couple of vehicles on the juice and have dealt with many more that belonged to friends.  IMO, nitrous is no harder on a motor than a blower if used properly.  If fact some would argue that it's easier because you aren't alway using it.

Now by properly, I mean in an amount that is safe for the setup and properly tuned.  The safe amount varies greatly based on the engine and mods done to it.  Does it have cast of forged pistons?  What type of head gaskets?  What is the timing set at?  How much is the fuel pump (and injectors if it's a dry shot) capable of supporting?

IMO the biggest problems are caused because it's cheap enough for anyone to afford, easy enough to install that anyone can do it, and tempting to swap jets for more power than is safe.  What I'm getting at is that a bunch of people use it without understanding it.

There are guys out there running F-bodies with a HPPIII or Predator and 100-150 shots of nitrous.  The general rule of thumb is to retard the timing 2 degrees per every 50hp of nitrous used.  Those tuners advance timing over stock!

I could go on and on about tuning nitrous and whats safe on a specific vehicle but that a good example.

I'll also be the first to say that I'm running mine on the ragged edge of what's safe but I got it there by data logging, adjusting and tuning, and then taking it to the next step.  I've taken it as far as I feel safe.  It would be quick and easy for me to swap 2 jets and make another 25-50hp.  Would it stay together?  Maybe but people doing that stuff is why engines fly apart.

I know someone who's running an F-body with a 150 shot and occasionally a 200 shot. He's still all stock on the motor and he's put upwards of 30K miles on it. He runs it hard all the time and takes it to the track frequently. I really can't believe it's still together.

I've been tempted to drop a 50 shot on mine but, like Bob, I don't want to push it on a daily driver. I think the NOS with a Magnacharger would be even worse on the drivetrain since they bring the high torque on-line really early.

I would agree with that if your spraying off the line.  I'm running a window switch set at 3000rpm, and stalling my converter to 2500-2600 rpm.  I don't get off the line far before it comes in but at least the stress from the launch is over before it hits.  That's in 4x4.

If I'm in 4x2 and leave that hard, it leaves and spins the tires past 3000, the nitrous hits almost instantly, and blows the tires off till it hits 5950 and shifts.  It may sound cool but it doesn't go anywhere fast.  If I had a 4x2 or were going to race it in 4x2, I couldn't stall the converter near as hard.

Blue, sorry for :jacked: your supercharger install thread with all of this nitrous talk.  There's plenty of time for that later :evil5:

OK. I got the oil lines installation done and tuned. All i have to say is....WOW! Whata difference  ;D  Thank you all for your help on this long going install.

Drilling & tapping the oil pan was piece of cake but manouvering the cordless drill and my skinny hands where no fun in a tight area. Anywho,is done.

I was able to upload a stock tune, changed the VIN with HPTune and uploaded the Predator.

Ok.   Whats next?  :evil5:

Hey Blue,

I was thinkin about gettin blown myself (:coolsmiley:), and was curious if you upgraded your tranny, rear end or fuel system or anything like that? Common sense to me says that once you start puttin HP like that through that tranny and rear you will start breakin stuff. I am a pretty good tranny tech so I would do it myself but was curious cause if so I would do that first before I dropped a supercharger in there. I know it's an old post but had some questions. Any input would be greatly appriciated thanks bro!

You should do a shift kit, hardened separator plate, and Corvette/billet servos. That will at least give the tranny a chance to survive for a while. I believe Mick's done the shift kit & servos.

I've done that plus the hardened separator plate, billet accumulator pistons, a Beast sunshell, new premium Alto clutch material and a wide 3-4 band. I probably should have gone ahead and added the GM 5-gear planetary over the stock 4L60E 4-gear while I had it open but didn't. The rear end can survive if you don't have oversize tires and only have up to about 150 hp added. The G80 in the Z71 is a weak point and several members have blown them. I've thought about adding a Detroit Tru-Trac but I guess I'll take my chances at this point. Most supercharger systems come with some type of booster pump or replacement fuel pump.

I hope you don't mind that I answered for Mick!

The tranny upgrade is a breeze, it is the rear I am worried about. You said G80 in the Z71 is weak, i have a Z71 is that the RPO code for the rear or something? New to the avy world so excuse my newbie-ness ha ha! Would be nice to wake up that 5.3L, bet these trucks freakin rip with these superchargers! Thanks again for the info!

I have not done anything to the rear end as i dont go by hot-doggin'.  ...but i do,once in awhile when invited at the red light by some young punk on his ricer :evil5:

My Cherries:

-Trailblazer SS
-T/A

The things ive done to besides the Vortech kit:

-Seperator Plate
-Vetter Servos
-Trailblazer Stall Converter
-Trans-Go Shift-Kit

The kit came with a Predator hand-held programmer with the custom tune in it and ready to go and bigger injectors. I think they're 42# or 60# injectors( i forgot which of the two).

Ya tell me about it! After a magnacharger, tranny upgrades, long tubes, etc. price tag is insane! Gettin ready to sell my built 72 lemans so may have the funds sometime soon! Sad to see the one go but worth it when thinking of the future of the avy, and it can still be a daily driver! Now that is the best of both worlds! Know of anyone who sells the "Maggies" as a combo with long tubes or anything like that? I have seen some somewhere but can't member where. Thanks again guys!  :goodstuff:

Here's a link to some recent posts that several of us made on forced induction. There's some decent reading there. The one thing I recommended was to take a look at performancetrucks.net. If you watch for a while you can pick up a low mileage Maggie MP unit cheap over there. If you're looking to save some money that's a good way to go; I'd look at the MP122HH unit if you can find one. It leaves you some room to grow when you inevitably decide you want more power.  :cheesy1:

Yeah but you cheat. You've got a cam and laughing gas and an exhaust cutout to make up for not having a Magnacharger!  :winkani: We've got a real 1/4 mile track here in St. Louis.....we could find out who's got the fastest Av. Are you up for it? I'll even chip in for some of your gas money.

BTW - you're invited too, Blue. And Main One can come along also. We really should try to show up en-masse sometime and have some fun.

Excellent!   Ill be bringing my hptuners :cheesy1:

I'll bring my laptop, and hopefully also my new HPTuners interface.  I had the older serial interface which they aren't going to support after September, so after I left for Australia the wife sent it to them, along with $199, for the upgrade to their new unit.  Got an email yesterday with installation instructions for installing software for the new unit - I'm hoping they sent the email when they shipped my new hardware.  I'm sure we can have some good HPTuners discussions.

Well, I haven't made a supercharger investment yet myself, so you aren't the only one with desires beyond current checkbook capability.  I have an HPTuners license for all 03's, but not any other year.  I should warn you though that the last time I tried to tune someone else's truck (Murman's), we were stuck on the side of the road for a couple of hours before we figured out the source of our predicament and got our hands on a good serial interface cable.   banghead1  Fortunately, my new interface will not require a serial cable.

Man you all are making me want to supercharge the avy NOW! I want to play!! If it wasn't so damn expensive I would do it like yesterday, but I am saving up now for the Maggie! Saw you guys are bringin your HP tuners to Bratfest .... Anyone wanna help me perk up the avy?? I got ice cold beers

The problem is,

all hand held programmers can only do 1 vehicle.  If you want to do another vehicle (same year),you would have to revert to stock on the current vehicle in order to do the other.

HPTuners can do several vehicles but you have to purchase such credits

Well, I haven't made a supercharger investment yet myself, so you aren't the only one with desires beyond current checkbook capability.  I have an HPTuners license for all 03's, but not any other year.  I should warn you though that the last time I tried to tune someone else's truck (Murman's), we were stuck on the side of the road for a couple of hours before we figured out the source of our predicament and got our hands on a good serial interface cable.   banghead1  Fortunately, my new interface will not require a serial cable.

Ah too bad, mine is an 04! I know tuning can be tricky, but usually worth the time! I think I may have found a decent price on a Magnacharger MP122, pretty sure that kit would work for my truck, but still have to check. If so I just might get it this week! So we will see

Always keep communication via emails or phone to make sure it fits your application.   It a lot of money ya know? buck2

Ya for sure! I don't need another "incident"!  I tend to get ahead of myself. I might be able to snag the whole kit for $3500, but need to be absolutely sure it fits the avy!

Like BD said. check it out thoroughly. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy something until you've double and triple checked it! Trust me, I learned the hard way.

Ya I hear ya on that one! It does fit though I checked. All the the 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 engines with the "cathedral port" heads use the same supercharger. So would work, and this is the kit, so includes charger, fuel injectors, etc. so for $3500 I think it is a good deal.

One other thing I didn't mention in the PM - ask if it has the programmer with it. If not, you'll have to spend another $450-$500 to get the programming set up. Seeing as how he's sent it back to the manufacturer for a checkup and repackaging I'm guessing it will have it.
2002 LPM Z71, factory 4.10s - Magnacharger w/3" pulley, TOG's headers, 216/224-.551/.551-115 cam/pushrods/dual springs/titanium retainers, built tranny, Yank TT2600 stall converter, 24K GVW Tru-Cool tranny cooler, Hooker Max-Flow muffler, Flex-A-Lites, ProCold intake, MSD wires & TR6 plugs, 20" Panther Juice 6's, 2.8" rear lowering springs & assorted hardware, J&J Enterprises stainless grille, body-color painted taillight covers. Self-tuned with HP Tuners software.

Cracked rear bumper cover from a run-in with a deer in fall 2008!

Anything that makes power isn't cheating.

I'll have to pass on Bratfest.  I have other plans but thanks for thinking of me.
2011 Silverado, Ext Cab Z-71 5.3, 6L80, Airaid CAI, Magnaflow cat-back, and a little tuning by me and HPT.

Gone but not forgotten, 2002 Victory red. The quickest lifted 4x4 AV in the US in it's day.

I assume it involves bikinis and beer?

Maybe we should move Bratfest next year to western Kentucky!

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......
