getting wax off the cladding...
« on: August 19, 2007, 09:20:57 PM »
Yep.  I did it.  My poor tired arm got sloppy waxing my Av and I got wax on the cladding in a couple of places.  What is the best way to get the white residue off?  ???   I tried a toothbrush, but there is still wax.  Some type of cleaner?  Soap?  I didn't want to just start trying stuff in case it discolors the cladding.

Spent 3 1/2 hours on it this morning and it's raining now.  I park on the street & all those lovely cars going by splashing mud....Sigh.

And that's it?  I've always been told you have to wax your vehicle at least once a year to protect the paint.  But that Gold Class does the job?  Hmmmm...I'll have to get some.

Maybe it'll wash off the wax residue too...

I really dont use none of that turtle wax and stuff.  I just wash it and use McGuiars clay and thats it. It removes contaminants before waxing but i just dont wax.

Heres a good how-to:

I wax twice a year.  I use a product called Wax Blaster and a toothbrush to get the wax off of the cladding.  It works pretty well.  A toothbrush and peanut butter works pretty good, but the wax seems to come back after a while.  I think the oil in the peanut butter just covers the wax up for a while.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

Is that Wax Blaster something you get at Auto Zone or O'Reilly's?  And peanut butter?  I can just imagine my hubby's face if I told him I was heading out to "butter" up the Av

I THINK so.. I took the panel off, got the switchs out and cleaned them all off.  Plugged it back in and it hasn't quit yet, although it is still rolling up and down slower than the other three windows.  We'll see.

Thanks Main One-I'll have to get some.  I REALLY don't like the couple of white "swirls" on the edge of the cladding.  I might have to tape it off next time...

I used Windex to get it off a area that I didn't want to get wax on. It will totallly break wax down. I would try it on a place you can't see first though as I haven't used on cladding before.

That's a good idea Sunburst05 - I got some Windex tonight (without ammonia, not sure what that would do to the cladding).  Hopefully will have a chance to try it before work in the am....Thanks! ;D

Whew!  I got it taken care of.  I remember reading somewhere that Dawn dish soap will remove the wax, so I washed the truck with dawn, Ice liquid clay bar, then Ice wax.  I think my arm is about to fall off, but the Av looks sweet again!!  I like the maguirs car wash-just not the water here in Bluff.  Next time I do this I'll dry the Av when I'm done...those water spots were TERRIBLE!!  See ya!!

Hey Mo, just caught this thread, hope you have/had fun at STI.  I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on my cladding for some wax issues.  Took it right off.  Had to rinse the spots and dry them afterward, but so far it looks great.

Nope-no water softener, just plain old city water.  I never drink the stuff, and now I know why.  I wish I had taken a pic before I got the mess cleaned up-I was in such a panic I never even thought about the camera.  But it's all good now and if it ever quits raining here at STI, the Av will look good again!!

I'll try that if I get wax on it again-I used that Ice stuff this last time & it dries clear.  You can even use it on the cladding.  Thanks!!

I use Ice on the cladding, but don't like how it works on the metal.  Bought a Random Orbital Polisher for the metal, but got it too close to the cladding last time I used it.
