Need some advice...
« on: August 16, 2007, 06:48:23 PM »
Went to the muffler shop today and talked to them about putting a Flowmaster 70 SUV on my Av.  The guy there said it won't make really any difference unless I do the whole catback thing to the tune of about $750.  Does that sound right?  Do you have to have the whole system to get any benefits from the muffler?  I just wanted to improve air flow & add a little sound....Any advice is appreciated!

Nope. Go somewhere else.  He's trying to sell ya "stainless steel" pipes.

I paid for dual exit behind the wheels, tips and muffler under $400.

-Flowmaster 70 = less than $100
-Tips can be expensive. I paid $175 for 2
-Labor = around $150

The muff man can use the existing pipes :thumb:  He'll cutoff from the old muffler back to the old tips.

...i replaced my old Flow 70 for a Flow 40.  Sold the 70 to a friend.  I wanted more growl to it and sounds like a beast with Gibson shorty headers. :thumb:

That's kind of what I thought.  He mentioned something about a "special" mandrel (?) bent SS pipes-but honestly!  I'm not trying to put together a show truck-only my mechanic & I will probably ever see under my Av..and hopefully not too many times..

I know this is kind of a sexist remark, but what is it about SOME mechanics that when they see a woman come in the shop, they think they are looking at a "blonde" when they're looking at a redhead?

OK.  Done venting....

Just checked out this link-he told me $229.95 for just the muffler.  I'm definitely going somewhere else....

You've pretty much gotten your answer but I'll add my 2 cents' worth. I bought my Gibson dual extreme for $245 and installed it myself. I wanted the dual exit pipes and the Gibson was one of the only ones available at the time I bought it. It's an aluminized system so at some point down the road I expect to have to replace it, even though it's holding up really well. I'll probably just put the stock system back on at that point.
2002 LPM Z71, factory 4.10s - Magnacharger w/3" pulley, TOG's headers, 216/224-.551/.551-115 cam/pushrods/dual springs/titanium retainers, built tranny, Yank TT2600 stall converter, 24K GVW Tru-Cool tranny cooler,  Flex-A-Lites, ProCold intake, MSD wires & TR6 plugs, 20" Panther Juice 6's, 2.8" rear lowering springs & assorted hardware, J&J Enterprises stainless grille, body-color painted taillight covers. Self-tuned with HP Tuners software.

Cracked rear bumper cover from a run-in with a deer in fall 2008!

Thanks all!  I appreciate the words.  I just get sooo frustrated sometimes.  It sounds like your being given a whale story about what you
"need" and "have to have" but I know just enough not to take a salesman at their word.  I SOOOOOO appreciate this site where I can ask knowledgeable people to help.   :yourock: :worship:

I went to the local shop (Bloomington, IN) that all the area performance minded people tend to flock to for my FM 70 and custom catback, which they did for about $240.  Not mandrell bent, but I think it still works mighty fine.  Top of the line systems go for about what you were quoted, but I'm not sure you really get much for your extra $500.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......
