Dash lights randomly light up
« on: January 26, 2012, 11:06:29 AM »
Tried searching but didn't find anything. Here's the issue, I will be driving and everything is fine and dandy until I come to a stop. Then if I give it full throttle, it takes off but everything cuts out and turns back on like I shut the truck off and restarted it(all the dash lights come on, lights will flicker on and off, radio on and off). This also happens if I hit a small bump and apply throttle. It doesn't happen all the time, but every now and then it does this. The engine cuts out for a split second, but then it keeps going. any ideas? :idiot2:

Sounds like a battery cable or something similar problem to me.

I checked all the battery connections and the junction box near the alternator when I was running my amp wire today and everything seemed to be in good shape.

How about the battery's connection to ground?  If that's good the next thing I think I'd check is the connecters going into the Powertrain Control Module.

It seems as if this is triggered by some acceleration g-force.  Wiggle some of the cables we've been discussing and anything not tied down they are connected to back and forth in the truck's back to front direction with the engine running and see if you can get the engine to cut out briefly as you've seen before.

These intermittent electrical gremlins can be a pain to isolate.

Haven't got a chance to check the connections but drove up to school today and all is well the whole 160 mile trip until I pull into my apartment complex, slight bump and all the dash lights come on. Then when I turn the truck around to pull into my spot it does it again.  :verymad:

Could possibly be a problem in the battery as well.  I've connected and disconnected the negative cable to my battery several times due to working on the vehicle, and have stripped out the terminal in the battery.  Vehicle hasn't given me problems trying to start, but when the efans which I installed kick in, the lights go dim for about a second or 2.  (I've always noticed a short flicker when the fans kick in.)  Happened to me just this morning on the way to work.  Lights were dim enough for me to start thinking "now what" before the alternator was able to kick in and cover the load.

When i disconnected the terminals they didn't seem stripped or anything, everything looked good.

Had the truck up on a lift to get the transfer case fluid changed, and while I was at it I checked all the grounds I could find. Everything looks nice and tight int hat department. I also did the DRL mod so they stay on with the parking lights, while I had the fuse panel out everything seemed tight, no loose connectors. However, now, the lights only flicker with the airbag and ABS light coming on.
