Topic: Time for plug change question (Done)

I'm getting ready to replace the plugs in my 04 with new AC iridiums, change out the wires to the MSD 8.5's, and clean the MAF. The Avy has about 74000 miles on it would it be advisable to warm the engine up before pulling the plugs since I don't think they have ever been changed?

I would not advise it because of the aluminum heads, when aluminum is warm it is easier to strip the threads. You should be fine, I just replaced the plugs on my 02' with 94k on it. They were still the originals, came out no problem.

For some reason I was thinking it was the other way around, warm to keep them from possibly stripping the threads.

wouldn't hurt but I don't know how much it would help either. I did my first plug change at 90k and the stock plugs were just getting to the point of needing replaced.

I received the MSD 8.5 wires as a Christmas present and figured I'd change the plugs while I was at it.

Well it took me about 2.5 hrs to do including cleaning the MAF. The numbers 1, 5, & 8 were a pain in the !#@ to get to on my 04. No busted knuckles or cuts...   No way would I put headers on if they made the plugs any harder to get to. The heat shields also do not fit the MSD 8.5 mm wires well so I left them off. Engine definitely feels smoother.

I haven't had heat shields on mine for about over 65k miles now. I didn't think to put them on the new wires at 90k.

I've talked to a few GM techs and I've been told that keeping the heads cold is the best way.
