level kit
« on: December 22, 2011, 11:40:09 AM »
I am looking at puting a level kit on my 2003 noncladded Z71. I've looked at a few different ones , some come with 3/4" to 1" spacers for the rear coils, and some do not? I now have stock 17" wheels with 265/70 /17 tires. I hear after the kit is installed I can run 285s?  Why do some kits have the rear coil spacers and some do not? Which is better? I don't plan on going off road, but I want it a little bit higher with out the" rear in the air " stance.

If you aren't wanting the rear any higher than it already is, the leveling kits you should be looking at shouldn't be adding spacers to the rear.

You should be able to put on 285s even without leveling, particularly if you were to go with a 65 or 60 series tire.  I've got the stock suspension/no body lift in my 03 Z66 and run 285/60R18s in the summer, although I've had to do some trimming of the plastic fender liners, although that is largely due to the increased offset in the aftermarket wheels I'm running which causes some rubbing when the steering wheel is at full lock turn.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

I'm pretty sure Fowlhunter did the same thing. It does look great. On mine, I changed out the torsion bar keys to a higher indexing key from Summit racing to level it out.

in october, I received a set of 1.5-2.5" torsion bar leveling keys for my birthday.  they have yet to be installed, but were relatively cheap considering they fall under the category of "suspension lift".  nothing needs to be altered, and the only additional parts i needed to buy were longer front shocks (bilstein), which supported enough extra travel for a 3" lift.  the cost to get them installed by the dealer in which i bought the truck is $200.  for a while the truck will sit almost as if it were a 3/4 ton, until i get some new wheels and tires, the tires being 285/70r17.  thanks.

I also changed my torsion bar keys except I went with a set off a. ford which also index more than stock and they were cheaper. If you go this route be sure to have it aligned.

Agreed, make sure you go get an alignment if you change/modify the keys.

Get a pix to show the whole truck from the side now. How close to level is it?

With the new keys the front sits 3/4 of an inch higher. That is with the adjuster bolt almost all the way backed out.

Opps what I mean is now the front sits 3/4 " higher than the rear. Now I know the suspension needs to settle.

I think the front of mine only settled about 1/4" in the year since my lift and keys were done. Might have to find a spacer for the rear coils to level it back up if it doesn't settle to your liking.  Looks good though.

What size rear coil spacers do you think I should buy?

Me personally, I wouldn't go more than an inch. You'll still have a slight rake to it once the torsion bars settle. Project Blackout has a thread on here about using hockey pucks as spacers. I'm not sure if he ever did anything with that or not.

Ok, Now I traded my old wheels and tires for a set of 305/50/20 wheels and tires. So now the level lift I just put on looks funny. So I guess I will take it off and return to stock .

Hello, all!  Still havent gotten the extra time or money to take the Bloodhound to the dealer to get my kit and shocks installed, but I've had a lot of "input" from my brother in law, specifically about which size tires I should get.  Its probably a case of him not understanding how tire sizes work, but 285/70r17, what I want, is larger than all of the "practical" sizes hes thrown forward

For the last post about wheels, yes backspacing and offset are key in finding the right aftermarket wheels, but the safest bet is proably a wheel with a 0" offset, which is what im doing.  Theres a large number of users on CarDomain who rock 0" offset wheels on their Avs.

Thanks,
Jon
